Everton U21s 5 - 0 Southampton U21s

Everton's Under-21 fixture against Southampton was originally scheduled to be played at Haig Avenue, Southport, this evening but has now been switched to Finch Farm.

The Premier League 2 fixture is Everton's 9th of the season and Paul Tait's young side sit in 24th place out of 26, having secured only one win so far this season – a narrow 2 - 1 win over Norwich City back in September.

The official Everton website are still showing that the game will be available to watch live and for free on both Everton's official YouTube channel and Everton's official KICK channel. Kick-off is at 7 pm GMT.

It was a pretty strong side that ran out at Finch Farm, with Andre Gomes making his first competitive outing of the season after suffering with an injury upon his return off loan at Lille last season. Virginia, Dobbin and Hunt, who were all on the bench at the City Ground yesterday, all started.

Lewis Dobbin slotted in the first. Kyle John stole the ball and was fouled for a penalty, taken by Francis Okoronkwo,

The third saw Dixon cross in well for a simple finish by Okoronkwo. Sean McAllister pounced on a loose ball and tormented the Saints keeper before he shot into the net for the fourth.  And Djankpata was fouled for a second penalty enabling Okoronkwo to complete his hat-trick from the spot.

Everton: Virginia, Dixon, Hunt, Astley (80' Jones), Campbell, Metcalfe [Y:52'], John (76' Beaumont-Clark), Gomes (62' Djankpata), Okoronkwo [Y:62'], McAllister [Y:89'], Dobbin (80' Heath).

Playing well; wish Holgate was in their team but he's on loan isn't he?

They were showing the BMD. Brickies and builders doing a grand job restoring the Hydraulic Tower. I'm a bit of a gusher for excellent brickwork and pointing. Well done to the lads and girls on that job.

Oh yes…the football…, Dobbin took his goal very well, cut in, pace and accuracy on the shot.

Was interested in the pitch surface.

“FieldTurf CORE 42-17 football turf which represents a genuinely revolutionary development in artificial grass technology. The fibre has a hardened centre for exceptional resilience and durability but a soft outer layer for optimum player comfort and interaction.”

Very impressive Tony! Love the thought of you getting all teary over the brickwork. The pitch don't sound half-bad too!

It's a rout ….excellent running from the right-back Dixon and pinpoint cross in for Okoronkwo to score: 3-0.

McAllister been very lively playing behind the striker, wins ball off defender, pretty cool to find space and slot home: 4-0.

I honestly think the pitches are too fast now, Tony, especially for some referees, when you see them making some of the biggest decisions, without taking everything in, with a proper footballing perspective.

Maybe that's the problem, maybe the pitches are now too fast for the VAR freeze-frame, or is it that they just need controversy?

It certainly changed, Tony, was looking at the Forest pitch on the replays was like a billiard table. It concerns me sometimes with the VAR that when they slow it down so much it distorts the reality of the situation, like when Martial went down.

On the slow motion, you can see the contact but I don't think on balance that it was a penalty. The ref's instinct in real time was the right call.

Thinking about Thierry Small because it's Southampton, hasn't worked out too well so far.

Out on loan at St Mirren, unused sub last two games. Still only 19 though.

5 nil now. I've only skipped through it in YouTube but some decent play from us.

Metcalfe is good again and Dixon looks good at right-back. Good on Gomes for getting himself fit in a youth game. Fairly anonymous performance though. Metcalfe is the one running the show.

Tricky one… Gomes on the bench for the first team, or a second goalkeeper? Flip of a coin decision, methinks!

I watched the U21s on YouTube and, to be honest, I didn't notice that Gomes was playing for the first half hour, he was fairly anonymous throughout.

But no harm in having him on the bench since we are still paying him £100k a week. There were however several far more deserving players on the pitch who should be given a chance ahead of him.

If you want the stand-out player from that U21s game, then put Metcalfe on the bench.

Hear, Hear! Robert.

I think the lad's got potential.
