The unusual summer of matches — including internationals, the much maligned Club World Cup — has arguably delayed activity in the transfer market although one cannot help but notice our darling neighbours and Manchester United have been busy, making some very bright moves.
Usually, you’d hope we’d have tuned up the squad for the season by the time the season starts… so our lack of progress is not making me panic — yet. Matters have been positive with the permanent signing of Alcaraz and the extension to Coleman’s contract.
But there are other pressing issues which have become frustratingly drawn out. Idrissa Gana Gueye for instance… Is he staying? What’s the story with Dominic Calvert-Lewin?
We appear dogged in our pursuit of Barry and Tete but no white smoke yet. Woltemade is obviously not coming yet the site moderators still see fit to give us updates on his likely fate. I don’t care, he can go and give the carthorse at Munich some competition.
This makes July a crucial month in which to freshen things up and, for the moment at least, I am not seeing the names to convince me we shall.
The longer we don’t buy a striker, the more I see us reaching some desperate deal with Calvert-Lewin and another season of the invisible man just is not sustainable.
