Season › 2024-25 › News Moyes's Miserable tactics are a waste of Everton's talent Daniel Storey, The i Paper 20/08/2025 37comments | Jump to last A fellow Blue posted this before and I just read it. My admiration of Moyes grew after we stayed up but just in relief, just like us all. A great manager or even good one. My mental jury is out. Disclaimer () Michael Kenrick 1 Posted 20/08/2025 at 14:54:52 I think this bloke does a good job of encapsulating some of the reasons why I was not happy when Moyes returned as our manager. This is what the miserable Scottish Presbyterian pragmatist is most accomplished at doing. Jake FitzGerald 2 Posted 20/08/2025 at 15:13:42 I doubt Moyes would take issue being called a miserable pragmatist, but Presbyterian - he might. Also - when did Moyes introduce our new £40 million striker again? Jay Harris 3 Posted 20/08/2025 at 15:23:07 It didn't take long for the Anti Moyes brigade to come out after the most appalling transfer window we have seen.No quality full backs, proven goal scorers nor wingers signed and yet we let a significant number of players go at the end of June.If Barry, Aznou and Travers are the result of the new elite recruitment committee, they all need sacking.Thelwell did a better job in his sleep with a negative budget. Bobby Mallon 4 Posted 20/08/2025 at 16:34:47 Jay @3 I'm sure you where one of many thousands who wanted most of those gone at the end of the season. Raymond Fox 5 Posted 20/08/2025 at 16:56:10 On the other hand Michael, when Moyes took over;-We Won Away at Brighton, Palace, Forest, Newcastle, Wolves and Southampton.Won at home playing Spurs and Leicester.Drew with Man U (H) Reds (H) Brentford (A) Wolves (A) Arsenal (H) West Ham (H).He's the same manager now – it's the players that have changed. Mike Gaynes 6 Posted 20/08/2025 at 17:10:57 Spot on, Raymond #6. Moyes had a very bad day on Monday, but he's had lots of good ones since he came back. Justin Doone 7 Posted 20/08/2025 at 17:33:25 We lost 3 loan players and lost another 3 first team players. We didn't sell them, we have not been able to bring in any revenue, profit or cash to reinvest it.We made 1 loan permanent and I would suggest his price of £15M being affordable the main reason for this as I already think he was on a relatively low wage. A good, young Premier League experienced player. We appear to have about £40M left to spend due to accounting rules and if we haven't already identified our priority targets, we keep it for January or next season.Bring in another 3 loan players and hopefully we can make a couple of them permanent in the summer. There's no way we will be paying £50M for Grealish when he's 30 and still demands mega wages. Jack Convery 8 Posted 20/08/2025 at 18:13:23 When I book into a hotel under construction, I don't expect to see herds of wildebeest and zebra grazing in the Serengeti… but neither do I expect to see a week-old, horrible turd floating, sluggishly, in the bath. That was Monday night at Elland Road. Derek Taylor 9 Posted 20/08/2025 at 19:05:35 We need Marsh and Doddy back! They brought smiles whilst every other post bemoaned the tactics of the then manager!!! Mark Murphy 10 Posted 20/08/2025 at 19:09:45 Marsh, Doddy and Smiles dont belong in the same post! Andy Meighan 11 Posted 20/08/2025 at 19:19:10 Jack 10.Pissed myself at that, absolute belter.Another day nearly over and still no signings, and I'm not convinced we will get any in either, that's how low I'm feeling.I will say this, though: we don't recruit another 4 or 5 and we are in dire straits. Christy Ring 12 Posted 20/08/2025 at 19:28:54 We brought in Kinnear and Hammond as part of our new recruitment team. Moyes has been saying to the owners for weeks we need 9/10 players, especially after losing so many players. The lack of signings is not down to our manager, just because you're not a fan of Moyes, he deserves backing after the superb job he did last season. Ashley Roberts 13 Posted 20/08/2025 at 20:59:02 Moyes definitely set the team up on Monday not to lose. This nearly worked but for the controversial penalty. The big problem on Monday was players playing out of position and asked to perform. Why oh why could he have not tried a different set-up where players played in their natural positions? Garner played LB, OBrien RB, and Charlie RW in a 4-2-3-1 system. Surely the players he had at his disposal lent itself more to a 3-4-3 formation and having more in midfield would have meant we were not overrun in this area of the pitch. It is clear we are in dire need of reinforcements so c'mon Friedkins, open your wallets and get some players signed; otherwise, we are going to be propping up the table again. Annika Herbert 14 Posted 21/08/2025 at 17:26:14 West Ham fan sites are already claiming their team will be involved in a relegation dog fight. The only team they consider worse than their own team is Everton. If we don't bring in some new signings very quickly, they may well be right. On the evidence seen so far, I am none too hopeful. Moyes may have credit in the bank after last season's turnaround. It won't last long if there are many more performances like the one at Elland Road James Marshall 15 Posted 21/08/2025 at 17:49:31 On Transfermarkt they say we've already spent £87.25M on players this summer. That's Barry, KDH, Alcaraz, Aznou and Travers. King was free. With that figure already spent do we really expect to be able to spend much more?Reports seem to suggest at the very most we had a kitty of £100M this summer so you could argue we're now looking only at loans or free agents. Sam Hoare 16 Posted 21/08/2025 at 18:18:13 Monday was really bad but let's show a little resilience all and especially let's not listen to what they say on the West Ham Forums! It's very early days and, though the transfer business has been a touch unbalanced in my opinion, there is time left and all reports suggest we will have some more money to spend and expect 3-5 more signings. It's frustrating that it's taking so long but I would always want most signings to be made with a view to the medium and long term.If we sign good quality at RW and RB with maybe a better option at 6 too (Juanlu Sanchez, Dilane Bakwa and Dion Lopy?!) then we should be well set for a finish nearer Top 10 than relegation zone. Mal van Schaick 17 Posted 21/08/2025 at 18:27:41 As I said in another post. We were unbalanced and players were playing out of position. It's terrible to watch. Pick a balanced side, with players in their favoured position. Dave Abrahams 19 Posted 21/08/2025 at 19:47:02 Ashley (13), I think the main reason Moyes nearly got a draw from Monday's game was because Leeds were not very good with all the possession Moyes's organisation presented to them. If he plays the same way against better teams, the result will be much bigger than 1-0. Colin Glassar 20 Posted 21/08/2025 at 20:51:12 Moyes can't go on living on past (last season) glories. His team, his tactics, his loss. No two ways about it.Moyes lacks imagination. He doesn't change things when they are not working, in other words, he's reactive not proactive. His substitutions are late and unimaginative and the teams fitness levels look suspect.I know he has his loyal fans on here who will justify and excuse his mistakes but it comes a time to recognise his limitations. We all want him to turn this abject start into success as his success is our success but he can't be allowed to rest on his laurels. This is a make or break season for us and he, nor anyone else, can fail. Dave Abrahams 21 Posted 21/08/2025 at 21:06:58 Sam (16) Sam the way this summers signings are going I think they will mostly be long term—they will be coming in the January window or next summers! Sam Hoare 22 Posted 22/08/2025 at 07:33:38 Dave, I certainly hope not but it's beginning to look more and more possible! Bobby Mallon 23 Posted 22/08/2025 at 09:37:05 Justin Doone @7. Are you basing those numbers on what money we had before we sold the women's team for £60M. Because if you are we have another £60M to spend. Peter Mitchell 24 Posted 22/08/2025 at 10:00:36 Colin - I get really fed up with pretty much all threads on here descending rapidly into Moyes bashing if we don't play well and/or get a result. I think we should judge any manager on the basis of their record across the season, not just on a single game where the defence was decimated, resulting in an unbalanced team. Moyes's record thus far in his second spell with us is a whole-season equivalent of 62 points - that is an undisputable fact. Andrew Clare 25 Posted 22/08/2025 at 10:14:28 Moyes did well last season but lets not kid ourselves hes just a notch up from Dyche. Those last few years of his first stint with us I was just praying that he would get the chop along with Kenwright. James Marshall 26 Posted 22/08/2025 at 10:20:23 While I was one of those who didn't want Moyes back at Everton, he is the most successful manager we've had in the Premier League era - he also won a European title with West Ham and gave them their highest ever Premier League points tally so a lot of what's said on here has to be taken with a pinch of salt, doesn't it?Yeah we all have our gripes about playing style, and dour/dithering Davey & all that but he's been better than our other managers in truth.I also remember a lot of Evertonians moaning every week about how awful Lukaku, Mirallas etc all were and look at the shite we've had in attack since.Be careful what you wish for. Liam Mogan 27 Posted 22/08/2025 at 10:28:25 Fans in general are never happy though, James.Man City fans were whinging all last year, a significant portion of Arsenal fans want Arteta out and don't get me started on Man Utd fans and their entitlement. Even if we win something, people will moan. Kevin Naylor 28 Posted 22/08/2025 at 10:36:40 Can't see how he turns it round from Monday with whats available. His tactics don't help but the players (apart from the odd 2 or 3) are not good enough. I fully expect he'll be gone by November and whoever comes in has an almost impossible task, James Marshall 29 Posted 22/08/2025 at 10:37:38 Yeah you're probably right, Liam. Damned if they do, damned if they don't.We need a culture shift, which I hope will happen in time. Everton needs a complete turnaround in every way.I was gutted to hear all the old songs at the new stadium - I hope over the next couple of years they phase all that out and truly modernise us.Fans need to take an active part in changing the culture at Everton as we've been living in the past for 30 years. Attitude is everything, and ours is lousy as a fanbase in many ways (loyalty aside). Robert Williams 30 Posted 22/08/2025 at 10:38:17 I'll ask the same question that I posted on a previous thread. Is it because of Moyes's limitations that players are steering clear of us.Is he the problem? Brendan McLaughlin 31 Posted 22/08/2025 at 10:47:08 Robert #30Grealish has arrived, Alcarez opted to stay and by all accounts Dibbling is happy to join but Everton won't pay Southampton's asking price. Raymond Fox 32 Posted 22/08/2025 at 10:47:22 It would not matter if we got the best manager in the world- just how you decide who is, is debatable - there would be plenty on here calling for his head in no time at all. We have only lost one game with a patched up side that were second favs to win and that on a disputed decision.Sure we didn't play well, but there will be plenty of teams that will lose at Leeds. We are in a mess squad wise no doubt, but who can you blame for that? Moyes will be naffed off more than most and has said so many times. The window is not yet over, if the situation is not considerably better at the end of it heads deserve to roll. Its a stupid system though when you can play two games before the window ends, some players and agents are going to wait till the end to see if they can get a better deal elsewhere. James Marshall 33 Posted 22/08/2025 at 10:49:44 Robert - I don't think so, no. We signed KDH, a young talent in Aznou and Jack Grealish. The club as a whole is likely not that attractive to most players - Everton are not known as a fashionable club, a lot of players want to play in Europe or live in London and there are countless teams seen as a more viable option than us because we've struggled against relegation for years.Almost every professional footballer on the planet knows Everton as a lowly, poorly run club because they're all under 35 and we've been run like a tinpot shitshow for 35 years. My son is 23 and supports Man Utd because they were the best team around when he was a kid. He (and his mates) see Everton as a joke of a club. We're just not an attractive proposition to his generation. It's got very little to do with David Moyes unless you're an Evertonian in his 40/50/60's who uses TW. Jerome Shields 34 Posted 23/08/2025 at 02:55:36 "Moyes had a bad day Monday." — I 100% agree. I expect he will have learnt a lot and ball progression will be a priority against Brighton.I expect the midfield to be more proactive rather than reactive. The midfield pivot will be Gueye and Alcaraz, with Dewsbury-Hall and Grealish being an attacking midfield pairing. This will result in more ball progression.Iroegbunam will be dropped. Bob Paisley used to say that when you see a player off the pace and fouling due to late tackles, it is because of poor fitness or he is carrying an injury. I believe that was Tim's case against Leeds. The defence will be the same due to injury, a thundering disgrace for Finch Farm at the start of the season. I expect TFG to be on their case. Against Leeds, the defence played well enough, but badly needed ball progression in midfield to at least get the defensive line up the field from its natural tendency to be deep. Ndiaye will be able to tuck in more due to the attacking midfield pairing and Beto will benefit from better forward passing and less hoofball which was a waste of time with Everton being so deep. Both forwards will be less isolated.Poor old Dave is certainly going to earn his corn, but does have the ability for the above – and no better man imo.Whoever said that progress at Everton was going to be straight forward and we would've all been in full agreement. Those that attend Bramley-Moore Dock will be blessed. John Hall 35 Posted 31/08/2025 at 04:50:30 Most of the posts on here are really negative about dithering Davey. Not reactive, dour defensive line ups and lack of invention. Not what I saw yesterday. Some great football and plenty of fast- moving attacking play with runners and plenty of invention.A few defensive lapses from a normally reliable back line but three goals at Wolves is a huge improvement from what we normally achieve.Lighten up guys and give credit where it is due.Still time to get a few more in and then we move onwards and upwards. Well done dithering Davey. Long may it continue. Rob Jones 36 Posted 31/08/2025 at 21:55:09 Well. This aged like dogshit, didn't it? Robert Tressell 37 Posted 31/08/2025 at 22:04:14 Don't worry Rob # 36, it will be back in fashion every time we fail to win this season. Micky Norman 38 Posted 06/09/2025 at 08:29:30 “Defeat at "…………..shows that giving Evertons flair players License to roam is not going to work”“Moyes needs to rethink defensive strategy”Click here for a pointless advert for haemorrhoid treatment.Headlines from newspaper sometime this season.
