Beto began his goal-scoring exploits in the league by registering Everton’s opening goal in the 3-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux Stadium last weekend.

It was the Toffees’ second win in the league after beating Brighton 2-0 at home, and they are fifth in the league with six points heading into the first international break of the season.

Manager David Moyes praised Beto’s humility, work ethic and ability to take constructive criticism in the post-match press conference. When asked about his manager’s words, Beto said, “He's a good man, he's a good person and he's always trying to push me, you know?

“Sometimes he jokes around, ‘Beto, you can't do this, you can't do that.’ But he's always trying to push me and when I do something bad, he says, ‘You need to be tidy, holding the ball – set.’

“I know that I need to improve that, but he knows too, so it's good to have him [on my side].”

There was some speculation about the relationship between the two being frosty after Moyes openly asked for more output from his number 9 during the pre-season. However, those apprehensions can be put to rest.

Beto has seen a career resurgence with Moyes taking over the reins at Everton in January. Since Moyes’ return to the club, only four Premier League players (Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Chris Wood) have scored more goals in the league than the eight Beto scored in 21 appearances under the Scottish manager.

He also got on the scoresheet against Mansfield Town in the Carabao Cup after tapping home Harrison Armstrong’s pass, a move he would go on to repeat against Wolves just a few days later.

“My favourite goals are tap-ins and these kinds of goals,” he said after the game.

“It's so difficult to have these type of goals, but I think this season, if I'm more alive, I need to believe that the ball will arrive – and it will arrive.

“I told Jack (Grealish) at the beginning of the game, I said, ‘Give me one today.’ And five minutes passed, he gave it to me, so it was perfect.

“I'm pleased with the result. A tough, really tough game to play. A really difficult stadium to play. I think the last two times that I came here, we drew last season, the other season we lost, so it's a tough stadium to play. We got three points and I'm really happy.”

Despite enduring a difficult start to the season with a 1-0 loss to Leeds United at Elland Road, Everton have managed to turn things around quickly. They’ve recorded three wins on the trot against Brighton, Mansfield Town and Wolves respectively and confidence is high in the camp.

“It shows what we can do,” added Beto. “I think we can go game by game. We need to just focus on the next game.

“We can't focus three, four games ahead. Game by game, prepare for the game and we go, we play.

“Every game I think it's possible for us to win. You can call me delusional, but I'm like this. And I think I can score every game too, but football is football.

“I think we can show more than what we showed today and we just need to keep going.”

The least you can expect from an Everton player is 100% effort and I don’t think anyone can question Beto’s work ethic.

He might have his limitations (who hasn’t?) but I like his attitude and hope it comes good for him with us.

Scoring the winner in the forthcoming derby would do nicely (preferably 9 minutes into injury time, sending the RS home with faces like slapped arses).

Very interesting to read that Beto is the 5th highest scoring striker in the league since Moyes came in, there’s a good chance that he’ll get a lot more chances with our new look midfield too - he might yet prove to be another astute Thelwell signing.

Glad that he recognises where he needs to improve, if he keeps working his arse off and giving his best (and scoring goals) then he’ll be loved by most blues.

Good to see him getting more confident upfront. I see where Mykolenko pulled out of the Ukrainian squad in training and gone back to Finch Farm with an injury, that’s all we need.

Christy, hopefully that's just risk prevention to protect him for our upcoming games. I know no details, however.

“He is a good man who’s always trying to push me” - Beto on David Moyes. If Moyes had his way. He would have pushed you out the door.
D M criticized you at every opportunity pre season because of your attitude In training. Your game against Leeds was widely classed as the worst performance of an Everton player in recent times. Moyes alluded to your "I've earned my place, now I don't have to try too hard".
Beto, you haven't done near enough to earn your place at Everton. You are one dimensional, lacking in basic skills, easily read, and cost Everton £27 million in having to buy another striker because you aren't good enough. At 27, you won't improve. Your attitude should be, how am I playing in the premier League on these wages? I'm going to give 100% every game, then maybe you would have earned your place, but not yet you haven't.

It's always fun to read what Paul Kossoff thinks about players. Here are his thoughts on Jack Grealish just a few weeks ago:

NOOOOOO!!!! A thousand times, NOOOOOO!! Complete joke if we are relying on Mr backwards to supply goals or assists.

Paul Kossoff be very careful what you write, everyone seems to be scrutinising your posts and then bringing them back weeks later to contradict you 😉.

Duncan, so nice you regard me with such esteem that I'm your first point of reference. Yes I dismissed Grealish out of hand as a waste of time, based on virtually zero output on his last two seasons at city. In fact most of his time at city was not good. Let's wait a bit before lauding Jack for his contributions over two or three games, let's see what he's achieved over a season, before you give him your, player of the year trophy shall we. Beto, not good enough to push us to Europe.

George, I enjoy people's criticising, I get a laugh out of it. Most of the time I post things just to see who takes a personal affront on me, having a go at what they seem to think are, direct insults to members of their family. So Webber's having a go, or trolling back on thing's I have said, knock your selves out. I really don't give a toss, to me it's just a bit of wind up fun to lighten up a site, that is full of praise where it's due, but like me, is ready to criticize but, after the fact. At least I try to put a wait and see slant on it before it all goes belly up.

Curious to know Paul if you would have preferred that we kept DCL and sold Beto.

Neil, DLC. I did say it would have been interesting to see Moyes turning him into a Felaini type, and take the pressure of goals off him. At a reduced wage, and seeing we had half the squad walk out, I would have to say a keep, but still not the answer to goals scored. I never rated him as a proven goals scorer, and as a solo up front striker, he was on a hiding to nothing.

I think you've read too much into my post. I genuinely find your input on this site very entertaining indeed, Paul. Doesn't matter that I don't agree with half of it, because that's what makes TW fun. If Grealish turns out to be dogshit for the rest of the season, I'd be only too happy for someone to take the piss out of me. The good thing is that I know you get as much satisfaction watching a great player in an Everton shirt as I do, so for now you'll be delighted that you got it so wrong.

On Beto, he has his many limitations, but by today's standards £27m is nothing for a centre forward, so it's quite impressive that he's scored a few goals. Neither he or Barry look like they can elevate Everton to a better level, but that's what we have for now.

Paul is always entertaining and sparking debate, keeps us coming back here!

If you were in our midfield Paul, we’d all love you for your ‘nark’.

Keeping everything crossed that Grealish read your posts and thought, “that’s it, I’m going to show Paul K that I can still do it!” You could have single handedly turned his career around 😀

You have to talk to these pros in language they understand. As in, shape up or ship out. Fk off you ain't good enough. Mr Jack backwards Grealish wake up! Beto, what the fk are you doing? ''Since Moyes’ return to the club, only four Premier League players (Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Chris Wood) have scored more goals in the league''

He must be doing something right.

He has settled in now - gotten used to the pace of the league (that can take a while) and now has a supply line like never before at Everton.

I think he will do his bit - and has been anyway.

Beto will never convince many fans simply because he is ungainly, looks awkward and his basics (control, passing, positioning) are poor.

He can be effective though, he's quick and gets into scoring positions. Disingenuously, this has a lot to do with his unorthodox approach. He, we, teammates and defenders have no idea what he's going to do next!

I think most of us know Beto's limitations but, if he scores, he's doing his job.

So, if he keeps scoring at a decent rate and at the end of this season has 12 to 15 goals in the league, then who would criticise him? Beside Paul Kossoff of course.

Sam Hoare
28 Posted 03/09/2025 at 21:04:15
Beto's primary job is to score. And as Rob @2 points out, only 4 players in the Premier League have scored more in the league than him since Moyes arrived.

He may not be the long-term answer to get us to the very top but he'll do for now and is an amiable chap to boot.

Ian Bennett

He has a good relationship with him and he's being pushed.

12 to 15 goals has to be the benchmark for me this season.

Paul “as a solo up front striker, he was on a hiding to nothing.”
Are you applying different standards for Beto.
For me
Good in Air DCL
Possum shot Beto
Speed of Mark Beto
One on One Beto
Hold up play DCL
Touch DCL
Would that we had someone with all and 100m and no PCR to buy

Right now, Beto, given the ball in dangerous positions to the opposition, is a dangerous worry to them. He has the demeanour, speed and size to worry them.

Yes his control of the ball is questionable (as is Barry's) but, now that we hopefully have a midfield capable of furnishing good chances for them or any other lingerer finding themselves in the opposition's box, I'm somewhat confident that this season we may at least end up with a positive goal difference... which will be nice for a change!

Beto's big and combative. Not many defenders will enjoy tussling with him.

With more gifted support players, we have a varied arsenal of offensive options and sharing the load should translate to less pressure on individuals. If the blend is right, we will reap the benefits.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks Paul Kossoff talks out of his ring most of the time.

You mention you do it as a bit of fun and a wind up etc, I remember what i perceived to be your bigoted views about Gaza recently (on an Everton forum) and that's what brought you to my attention, unfortunately for the wrong reasons.
