Season › 2024-25 › News Harrison Armstrong captains England U19s to victory over Ukraine Michael Kenrick 04/09/2025 19comments | Jump to last Everton's highly-rated young midfielder, Harrison Armstrong, has added another impressive accolade to his burgeoning career, captaining the England U19 side to a 2-0 win in a friendly against Ukraine on Wednesday. This leadership role on the international stage at Pinatar Arena in Murcia, Spain, will be an important milestone in the young player's career. Armstrong's mature performances and clear leadership qualities have been noted by England's youth setup, and his captaincy of the U19s is a testament to his growing influence. The 18-year-old, currently on a season-long loan at Preston North End, led the Young Lions from the centre of the park as they secured a comfortable win. The result marks another significant milestone for the Kirkby-born talent, who has been a standout performer at both club and international level in recent seasons. Despite Ukraine having an early goal ruled out for offside, it was England who took the lead in the 10th minute when Divine Mukasa struck the Young Lions ahead. They doubled their advantage just after the hour-mark, when substitute Shumaira Mheuka made it 2-0. Douglass Lukjanciks, Everton's promising young goalkeeper, was an unused sub on the bench. Armstrong, who has progressed through the Everton academy since the age of 5, signed his first professional contract with the Blues in July 2024 and made his Premier League debut as a late substitute in the fixture at Tottenham the following month. After a successful loan spell at Derby County last season where he was nominated for the club's Young Player of the Season award, the central midfielder completed a temporary move to Preston North End on Transfer Deadline Day to continue his development in the Championship. While he is gaining valuable experience away from the Hill Dickinson Stadium, his continued recognition with the national team highlights the potential that many Evertonians believe he possesses. The victory over Ukraine, with Armstrong at the helm, serves as a strong signal that the future for both the player and the club is bright. Disclaimer () Craig Scott 1 Posted 04/09/2025 at 10:43:35 Great to see an Academy product with plenty of potential getting recognition and valuable experience. He has the potential to be another find like Branthwaite. We need to retain him and develop more young players like him. Andrew Merrick 2 Posted 04/09/2025 at 11:10:44 I thought the same Craig, he had to be a keeper. But the decision to bring in Rohl begs the question, how do all these guys fit?So Harrison gets loaned out, cant argue he is developing, but is it the clubs intention to keep or sell? David Bromwell 3 Posted 04/09/2025 at 12:14:32 I don't really understand why he has gone to Preston, however, he looks a class act in the making and someone we should be aiming to keep long term. Hopping he will have a fine season with Preston and come back into our1st team squad for next season. Dave Abrahams 4 Posted 04/09/2025 at 12:20:05 How much is the loan fee Preston are paying to get this lad for the season? Alex Parr 5 Posted 04/09/2025 at 12:44:48 Seems a very level-headed young man. Wish him well at PNE and hopefully returns an even better player. Kieran Kinsella 6 Posted 04/09/2025 at 18:29:09 Interesting Douglass Lukjanciks was on the bench. Remember a summer or two ago, Man City were supposedly trying to get him for £10M or something? Martin Farrington 7 Posted 04/09/2025 at 19:15:18 I reckon he was put out for the season because Gueye won't last much longer as a club player. With Armstrong's development in mind there would be no need to step into the market. Sam Hoare 8 Posted 05/09/2025 at 12:39:11 I think the priority has to be about turning Armstrong into the best player he can be and there is no doubt in my mind that his development will be better served by hopefully playing 2000+ minutes it the championship rather than a few hundred off the bench for us.Ultimately he has to earn his place in our team; he does that by improving his game to a level matching or beyond James Garner or Merlin Rohl. It's very hard to make that improvement if you're not playing regular minutes and so ironically his best chance of playing for us is to leave us, temporarily at least. He has the opportunity to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in the Championship and if he can do that then he gives himself a shot of starting for Everton next season. Bob Parrington 9 Posted 05/09/2025 at 12:52:34 Sam, a very sound analysis. I feel he will succeed in becoming a long term fixture in the Everton team. Of course, only time will tell! James Flynn 10 Posted 05/09/2025 at 20:56:19 Sam (20) - Looking at PNE's mid-fielders, adding Harrison, makes 12 of them; 5 of whom haven't logged any minutes, yet.Whatever Heckingbottom's thinking, PNE looks an opportunity for Harrison to work his way into some serious minutes. 3,000 shouldn't be too much across the 42 games still to go. Tony Abrahams 11 Posted 06/09/2025 at 13:27:08 He will hopefully play another game for the Under-21s this week, and be back in the squad next week. Derek Taylor 12 Posted 06/09/2025 at 14:33:27 Harrison should be learning his trade playing Premier League football at Everton — not marking time in the lower reaches. Moyes would rather blow £Millions on foreign unknowns than give a 'homegrown' the chance to do 'a Colin Harvey'! Ian Bennett 13 Posted 06/09/2025 at 14:43:47 I disagree. He needs 40 games in the Championship, rather than sitting on the bench. He's not quite ready for the Premier League, like Branthwaite before him. He needs games to finish his education. Michael Kenrick 14 Posted 06/09/2025 at 15:00:24 No more U21s games this week, Tony. And I don't think the U21s have anything on the slate for next week either. Conor McCourt 15 Posted 06/09/2025 at 16:06:46 I'm with you Derek. don't understand the decision to send him on loan. Is it purely down to age? Or down to experience? Arteta didn't feel the need to send Saka on loan. He's already proved good enough for the Championship, what more can he learn there? Why should he not play minutes for us?Last season and since the start for us he already looks like he will hold his own and you could argue he is the most complete of all our midfielders in terms of his attributes.Even forgetting his talent, look at his competition. If he were competing with Pickford, Grealish, Branthwaite or Ndiaye you could understand if he went to Germany for a season. But in midfield we have many doubts.Gana is the only cert but at his age his decline will be instant as he relies on energy. That could in 3 months time or 3 years, KDH is not good enough defensively Garner is not that much superior to him now and will be needed this season and especially in the short term as our 2nd choice full back on both sides.Rohl could be hit or miss and few Bundesliga signings tear it up straight away. Indeed he wasn't always a regular for Freiberg.Tim is in the the same boat as Harrison. There is a free spot to play alongside Gana...let the best man win. I would ask this question. Gana comes off injured next week. Who do you want to come on? Would you think it a mistake if you see Moyes had chose Armstrong? Andy Crooks 16 Posted 06/09/2025 at 16:57:31 Conor, you are one of the few posters who could make me change my mind. However, I think you are wrong on this one. For Armstrong to get any games under Moyes would mean our luck with injuries would be even worse than usual. It would mean: Röhl is shite; Gana gets old in six months; Garner becomes a permanent full-back; and Dewsbury-Hall offers nothing, ever, defensively. Weigh that up against Armstrong getting loads of time at Preston, building his confidence, maturing mentally and physically, and coming back next season to be a first choice. Christy Ring 17 Posted 06/09/2025 at 16:58:00 I definitely think Armstrong is good enough to be part of our Premier League squad. For an 18-year-old, he's skilful, physically strong, and capable of coming off the bench to make an impact. I don't understand why he's loaned out, did he not learn enough with Derby last season? I sincerely hope we can take him back in January, with the players heading to Africa? Ian Bennett 18 Posted 06/09/2025 at 17:47:50 Playing wing, striker or full-back is one thing, centre-midfield, centre-back or goalkeeper is very different.Yes, he could have an absolute worldie and go into the World Cup squad. Or he has some poor games and costs some defeats. That could set back his career back.He is a good player. I watched him carefully against Mansfield. Overall a good game, but there was a good 10-15 minutes at the end of the first half where he faded out the game. And they're League One.Put him up against a Rodri etc and I think you'll see he needs a period of time to develop. It worked for Branthwaite, and it could leave us with a first-choice centre-midfielder for next season who'll be just 19 or 20. We need him to learn and make his mistakes in the Championship. Conor McCourt 19 Posted 06/09/2025 at 19:39:16 Andy (other thread)I am not suggesting that all these scenarios need to happen for Harrison to get game time, I am just highlighting with his talent there are no real barriers for him to be a regular starter or a regular contributor.I don't see him as your typical academy player – I see him in the same way as I did Anthony Gordon. Sometimes I feel players learn from better players about decision making etc and I'm not always sure dropping to the Championship is as beneficial as many make out. Gordon himself prospered when he came back to Everton rather than getting emptied in the Championship. If you look at our squad, you need a minimum of 4 central midfielders and optimally 5. Dewsbury-Hallis a Number 10, like Alcaraz. I would already prefer Armstrong as a midfielder now as we lost the game against Leeds when Moyes moved him there as Stach began to run riot and could have had a hat-trick.When you look at the composition of our squad, we have 4 wide men and 2 Number 10s (including Dewsbury-Hall). This leaves Gana (who will be away in January), Garner, Iroegbunam and Röhl battling for 2 places. The point about Garner is that Mykolenko is out again and Aznou has hardly trained. Moreover ,on the other side, should Dibling do well (always comes inside), then Garner would work better in tandem than O'Brien. I suspect and hope that Seamus and Nathan are only used in emergencies.Put it this way, Andy: I would much prefer even now to see Gana and Armstrong start with Garner at right-back (if O'Brien is out or at centre-back) than playing Garner central and starting the other 2 at right-back.We are in 3 competitions and not a lot of numbers and if we could have loaned one more out I would have chosen Patterson over Armstrong as the former is not good enough for Everton while young Armstrong is really impressive and composed for his age.
