Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota has been killed in a tragic car accident, according to reports in several Spanish media outlets.
Jota's brother, Andre, also a footballer playing for Liga Portugal 2 side Penafiel, was also killed in the accident on the Rias Bajas Highway (A-52) in Zamora, northwestern Spain.
He had gotten married to his partner Rute Cardoso just 10 days ago.
“Two young people died in an accident on the A-52 (Palacios de Sanabria). The Rionegro del Puente Fire Station (Northern Zone of the @DiputacionZA Consortium) responds,” Zamora’s Provincial Council said in a statement.
“The vehicle caught fire, and the flames spread to the vegetation. They were 28 and 26 years old. RIP.”
Born in Porto, the 28-year-old forward has played for Pacos de Ferreira, Porto, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Liverpool. He also made 49 appearances for the Portuguese national team and has won the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Championship and the UEFA Nations League twice.
He is survived by his wife and three kids. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

I heard it just now from a Norwegian Red (joking aside). Dreadful for his family.

Various Swedish news outlets are reporting that Diogo Jota has died as the result of a car crash in Spain. If this is true, it will come as a blow to Liverpol FC and their supporters.
I'm sure you will all join me in sending my condolences to his family, friends and to the Reds for their loss.

Played for the enemy but a quite fantastic player and of course boyhood blue and if things had worked out differently maybe he'd have been an Everton player 10 years ago, who knows.
Tragic news.

I almost fully understand such feelings as, a few weeks ago, when we were travelling through Melbourne, at 3am my wife (77 yrs old) needed to go straight to hospital. Close on death in ICU but, after 4 days fortunately survived.
Rest in peace Diego!

I recall from maybe 35 years ago, a female friend using the comment, "Life's a bitch and then you die". How true that is, today!
35 Posted 03/07/2025 at 11:10:00
This probably isn't the time or the place but I went in my mates Lamborghini once. It was one of those "I'm going to show the car off to you" type of rides. It was one OF the most terrifying experiences I've had to endure. It simply felt like an out-of-control death trap that could go wrong at any minute.
I'm not pretending to know all the facts but the desire for these supercars I will never understand they are simply dangerous.

Fortunately, he decided it was far too much for his driving skills and sold it! Phew!

Devastating for the family to have lost the two brothers. Rest in peace Diogo and Andre.

Remembering the footage after the last derby at Goodison, when three Liverpool staff all received a red card, with aggressive noise swirling all around the stadium, Jota just blew out his cheeks, looked at the floor and shook his head.
Life is often too short, so for his parents to lose two sons and his three young children, losing a father is simply heartbreaking.
At times like this football doesn't matter, even though he was an exceptional footballer. So sad.💙
52 Posted 03/07/2025 at 15:36:09
RIP to the brothers.
53 Posted 03/07/2025 at 15:57:36
Immediately reminded me of when Jose Antonio Reyes was killed in an auto accident in Spain. Now Diogo Jota.
Hug someone you love today. Don't wait.

Not only have the parents lost both their sons, the young children have lost their father. Heart-breaking stuff.
55 Posted 03/07/2025 at 19:03:14
God knows how his parents must feel,to lose both sons,...
his new wife and their 3 little ones must be distraught.
At times like this, football doesn't matter...
💙

I've been driving half the day, listening in to the tributes from supporters of all clubs.
A day like this is when you put football rivalries aside.
Two human beings have died in tragic and awful circumstances.
A mother has lost two sons. A newly wedded wife her husband of 10 days and 3 young children their father.
57 Posted 03/07/2025 at 19:40:08
Some years ag,o my daughter lost her husband in and accident coming from work. The devastation it left I wouldn't wish on anyone. Football is just a game; this is real life.
Kindest regards to his parents, his wife and kids.

Danny - I agree with you but some Evertonians (usually on Twitter) can stoop to low levels and I'm pleased that hasn't happened here.

I loved watching Diogo Jota play. I know I shouldn't have, because he was across the park, but he just projected so much joy on the pitch, with his feet and his flair and the smile that always seemed to be on his face when the camera caught him. Others play with a scowl. He played with a big wide grin.
And I have no doubt that he brought similar joy to his wife and kids and family and friends. He just seemed like that kind of guy.
My heart aches. For all of them.

I hope the entire Liverpool family rally around this kid's family and are a source of strength for them.
So tragic, so young.
Eternal rest grant unto him...
Addendum:
Blue-Red really doesn't matter right now. I just don't care about colors when these things happen.

Ive just been watching the funeral possession on the news and its still very hard for me to get my head around it, but Im sure people will be be giving Oasis credit, for what many will deem to have been a touch of class, at their opening concert in Cardiff, last night, when you consider the rivalry that exists between our two citys.
