Tim Iroegbunam deserves credit for redemptive performance against Brighton

I made him close to MotM on Sunday, and I wonder whether Moyes might see him as a contender to fill Gana's berth when he retires. Either way, he's definitely a keeper, and, I agree, undeserving of the abuse he sometimes gets on here.

Imagine how much more confidence that would have given him. Talk of lending him out but on this performance maybe he stays. Unless we sign someone… but, with time running out and no right-back, I doubt it.

He is still only 22 and only going to improve, added to that he has some size about him and is not going to be knocked off the ball easily.

I think we have a potential gem as he has a lot in his locker.

I fear that not through malice but clumsiness or over-enthusiasm, he might acquire a reputation. That could cost us dear with an over-fussy referee; we are not one of the best-loved teams in the Premier League.

Good management is the key; I do think we have an excellent work in progress in Tim.

Against Brighton they were proactive and positive in ball progression.Moyes got it wrong against Leeds and right against Brighton.If he had have done the same against Leeds as against Brighton Everton would have won the game.

I also think he is not fully fit hence the late challenges.

And that's 4 in 4 if you take account of the final Premier League games last season.

PGMOL's former chief Keith Hackett has said:

“Knowing David Moyes, even going to Finch Farm and chatting to him about a particular player's behaviour, there's no doubt that he and his coaches understand they need to do a bit of work on him.

“Otherwise, they're going to lose him because he'll be suspended after receiving five yellow cards, and he's on that path pretty quickly after just two games.

“Moyes will almost certainly pull Iroegbunam aside. He needs some advice, whether that comes from the manager or the players around him, but with the tackles going in, they're easy ones for the referees to recognise.

“You can easily find a challenge that could convert to red if a referee's judgement or viewing angle is not the greatest, or if VAR intervenes.

“He needs advice to avoid a red card in the future. No manager will want to get rid of the enthusiasm, but something is missing here, and it needs to be resolved.”

Clearly Tim will now be a marked man in Andy Joihnson fashion. I thought the challenges were incidental. Iroegbunam goes to intercept the ball but the opponent just gets his foot to it a fraction of a second earlier and kicks it on, with Tim's boot then making contact.

That's counting Alcaraz as an attacking player, and also letting Harrison Armstrong go out on loan.

I know Soucek isn't popular with a lot of posters on TW, but I've always rated him. He's a big defensive unit who covers a lot ground (albeit he is one paced) He wins a lot of aerial duels and also scores a lot of goals for someone in his position.

In our ideal XI, I want us to play Ndiaye, Grealish and Dibling behind Barry or Beto, so that means Dewsbury Hall moving deeper to a No.8 type role. He's not the biggest lad and not the best defensively so we need an anchor deep lying midfielder who will sit deep, win headers and will allow Dewsbury Hall to be make midfield runs. I don't think Gana can do that role because he likes to roam too much.

I would pick Gana in some other games when Dewsbury Hall plays further forward in a more advanced No.10 role like yesterday.

His energy and enthusiasm are something to build on, fingers crossed, he can develop and become a quality regular.

That sort of performance should give him the confidence to kick on from there.

Keep him in the side and watch him grow.

Edit: selling Iroegbunam because we buy Soucek would be one of the worst pieces of business Everton would have ever done.

I do agree that I’d rather Dewsbury-Hall played at ‘8’ with a more attacking 3 behind the striker, but Moyes doesn’t seem interested in that - maybe in some home games or as a game chasing alternative.

He's got the tools and is going to be a very good player.

His decision-making, fitness and tackling need improvement, and that's from playing games and making mistakes. Are we in a position to give him that time plus Dibling and Armstrong in the Premier League?

He is needed currently, but a loan in the Championship in a top side would bring him on a lot where it is more forgiving. A last-minute window decision will be made dependent on where we are.

If it's selling him for Soucek, I think that would be a poor swap.

What I'm not getting is how we are praising Everton's performance against Brighton because we won. If Brighton had taken the chances and had a bit of luck, we would have been kicked into the Mersey waters with a 6-2 loss.

Can I ask you, who, if we had been beaten, would you have blamed, the defence or the midfield?

Something was not right, that Brighton were getting so many clear-cut chances. Yes, a win is a win, but to heap praise on a team that should have been well beaten seems a bit odd.

Wolves have bought two full-backs, and are buying another defender, it seems a bit odd that a defensive based manager, Moyes, is not concentrating on the defence.

I can't wait to see the team for the Wolves game, will Moyes put out a defensive or attacking side?
