Tyler Onyango has joined League One side Stockport County on loan for the 2025-26 season.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who joined Everton Academy aged 8, returns to Stockport, where he spent last season before his loan spell with the eventual play-off semi-finalists was cut short due to injury.

Onyango has made five sub appearances for Everton’s first team after being handed his debut in a FA Cup fourth round win over Sheffield Wednesday in January 2021.

The Everton U21s player has previously had loan stints with League One clubs Burton Albion and Forest Green Rovers in 2022-23, but is now too old to feature for the Young Blues.

I was trying to figure out his contract situation, which I had down as him signing a 3-year deal back in 2022. That contract was due to expire in the summer but I didn't think he was one of many from the Academy being given new contracts.

But he must have been. I guess I didn't do a full search of the Everton website… Nah, nothing there. Not even mentioned in this one from 9 June 2025:

Other sites saying his contract extension ended in June 2025.

Ah, Joe Thomas at the Echo has the answer:

Onyango contract situation

For those wondering, Onyango signed a new 2-year deal with Everton last year ahead of what would have been the expiration of his deal this summer.

Strange... I can't find any record of that. Neither can my smart electronic friend…

Thelwell installed the belated (for us) industry standard of signing short contract extension with youngsters to buy the club some time of making a decision and maintain an option in selling them (if there is a market, which sadly was not the case for a lot of young folks out of Finch Farm in the past decade).

Tyler, despite that ill-fated campaign with Forest Green, has not been really tested on the League One level, so fingers crossed that he is getting the First Team Football at Stockport to give the club (& himself) a clear picture on the next step by June 2026.

The fact that he had a debut in 2021 and is now on his 4th loan suggests to me he won't be one we see on a regular basis for our first team. Appreciate he was injured on one of the loans. He's likely to join many others who came through our academy and ended up with decent a career at lower levels.
