Updated Everton academy product Harry Tyrer has completed a permanent move to Cardiff City, with the 24-year-old goalkeeper never having played for the Everton first team.
The Crosby-born shot-stopper has been a fixture of the Blues’ youth setup for over 15 years, but with a clear path to the first team blocked by the likes of Jordan Pickford and João Virgínia, Tyrer is pursuing a fresh start in South Wales.
Cardiff had been operating under a transfer embargo, but with paperwork now filed, Cardiff were cleared to register players on Friday and swiftly announced the signing of Tyrer, who completed a medical earlier this week, allowing them to register him as their first signing of the January window.
Tyrer joined Everton’s academy at the age of 7 and rose steadily through the ranks. He became a mainstay for the Under-18s during the 2018-19 season, notably helping the team reach the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup.
His professional development was accelerated by a string of successful loan spells. He earned rave reviews during a 55-appearance stint at Chester in 2022-23, followed by a title-winning campaign with Chesterfield in 2023-24, where he played 42 times as the Spireites secured promotion back to the EFL. Most recently, Tyrer spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Blackpool, making 38 appearances in League One.
While Tyrer never made a competitive first-team appearance for Everton, he has been a frequent presence in matchday squads under various managers, including Carlo Ancelotti and David Moyes.
In total, Tyrer has been named as a substitute for the senior team 10 times in competitive fixtures:
Premier League: 7 times (including five games under Ancelotti in 2020-21 and in 2025 against Leeds).
FA Cup: 3 times (including a quarter-final against Manchester City).
He also featured for the first team in several pre-season friendlies, most notably keeping a clean sheet in a 2020 victory over Preston North End at Goodison Park.
With his contract currently set to expire in June 2026, the move represents a logical step for both parties. Everton secure an undisclosed fee for an academy graduate, while Tyrer gains the opportunity to compete for the No 1 spot at a Cardiff side looking to bounce back up to the Championship.
