Premier League #5: Everton 1 - 0 Ipswich Town
The Tractor Boys came to Hill Dickinson Stadium this afternoon and almost got back from an early goal after a shameful VAR decision on Barry's second goal.
Jack Grealish starts but no Dibling, of course, and Harrison Armstrong is back, with Johnson preferred, no doubt for his vast experience... The usual Moyes nonsense of naming two goalkeeepers on the bench means one less place for any promising youngster from the U21, with only Graham sitting there, and unlikely to see much action.
Merlin Rohl is still out injured, along with Christian Norgaard, underlining how importabt it is that Moyes rotates his squad to the maximum extent possible... a message that so far this season seems to have gone right over his head.
First Half
Everton kicked off, the Pickford hoof initiating a scrappy bout of head tennes before Grealish got the ball and passed it up the line to Dewsbury-Hall who was whipped out by Diop as he smashed the ball away. Long throw-in only that fell for Dewsbury-Hall to welly high and wide.
Ipswich nearly broke through on the counter but Pickford collected the ball.
At the other end, a brilliant ball through from Armstrong saw Johnson collect and spin but incredibly shoot just past the post!
After Barry almost upset Walton's clearance, Johnson redeemed himself with a good recovery steal from Enciso.
A dreadful giveway by Dewsbury-Hall let Ipswich in and Pickford had to make a desperate save with his foot.
Everton attacked with Grealish inviting Mykolenko to cross but it was Dewsbury-Hall whose cross was punched out, and Tarkowski smashed it on the volley with Thierno Barry (11') in line and very smartly twisting his Torso to deflect it into the other side of the Ipswich goal off his chest. Brilliant from the Frenchman!!!
Branthwaite tried to release Grealish down the left but hit his long pass too hard. Ipswich had a decent spell but it needed a clever block by Mykolenko to prevent Enciso from scoring.
From the Ipswich corner, it was cleared out to Ouattara and his fantastic strike brought an equally good save from Pickford.
Everton played the ball around in their own half before Garner wastefully lumped it up to Walton. Superb defensive work by Johnson stopped Enciso, but he could only pass it forward to nobody.
Fatawu saw Pickford off his line and tried to chip it long but just off target as Pickford recovered to paw it behind. But Everton were needlessly conceding the initiative to the visitors, Branthwaite fouling Enciso.
Grealish was twice invited to do something down the left but played it safe. A dropping ball fell to Dewsbury-Hall who volleyed goalward but Diop was in the way. Grealish finally beat his man but Mykolenko was closed down.
Garner was next to see his shot blocked, this time by O'Shea. Maitland-Niles put in a great cross for Barry, who saw a decent headed chance spin wide of the post with Walton at his mercy.
Good work from Clarke saw Emersonn head just wide. Fatawu dragged down Dewsbury-Hall for a central Everton free-kick that played to Johnson who was half-asleep and Ipswich countered at pace. Ouattara crossed well to Davis who seemed to have an open goal to aim at but he rolled it harmlessly back across goal. He was flagged offside but VAR would have awarded a goal.
Some better Everton play saw a cross from Mykolenko cause some panic but Everton weren't creating any chances. Garner then took a fraction too long lining up his shot and it was blocked. Everton ahead 1- 0 at the break.
Second Half
A really good Ipswich corner was swinging in under the bar, Pickford punching it clear before a foul was called, possibly on Pickford.
Johnson was doing good work in defence until his forward pass between two Everton players was jumped on and Ouattara lashed a shot at Pickford.
Everton were showing a painful lack of initiative in terms of getting the ball forward Grealish repeatedly cutting back inside and playing the ball backwards, not forwards.
Armstrong finally got some forward movement, but Maitland-Niles could not find a blue shirt. Next, Branthwaite drove forward but Dewsbury-Hall's cross was not turned in, coming off Davis for a corner.
It was a superb delivery from Garner and a wonderful header from Theirno Barry (58'), just inside the far post, a great goal... but VAR wanted to call it off, claiming Johnson was impeding the goalkeeper.... and the referee of course agreed on review... absolute rubbish. There was no way Walton was saving that. The game is utterly gon with this VAR garbage.
That only gave Ipswich more encouragement, Dip advancing unchallenged and Enciso scooping his shot high over the bar. Grealish finally played a forward ball, but lacking in power, and Barry could ad nothing to a weak header.
Grealish was barely touched by Lukic but a free-kick was given... and completely wasted. Dewsbury-Hall passing it to Armstrong who was looking the other way.
A good move saw Dewsbury-Hall play a perfect pass to Johnson but his effort was completely mishit. Dibling on in his place.
Fatawu blatantly dived after a non-tackle from Garner and the referee showed him a second yellow: Ipswich down to 10 men -- Garner lucky not to be carded himself for his angry demand.
Grealish had a lot more space now, and was doing a lot more... Mykolenko winning a corner that Walton punched out to Dewsbury-Hall, but his shot was poor.
Everton continued to work it around the Ipswich area but to limited effect. Dibling cut inside and tried a curler but Walton read it all the way. Dibling then beat his man and scooped a beautiful ball to the far post and Dewsbury-Hall but it spun off him and wide.
Dibling next went more direct, into the side netting. After a long break, George came on and Dibling had another go but it was well blocked by Davis.
A strange spell followed when some of the crowd wanted a foul on Dibling but Ipswich adavanced and it looked like Everton were in control but Branthwaite had the ball stolen off him.
Armstrong broke forward and was desperate to score but his shot was interfered with and screwed wide, Dewsbury-Hall screaming for a pass.
George drove forward, his shot blocked for a corner. A superb delivery from Garner but headed away by O'Shea. Late subs by Moyes as 7 minutes were added.
Somehow, a ball came to Flemming who stabbed his shot up and over Pickford and the bar, perhaps their last chance. But Ipswich kept finding a way to turnover and counter, making things very nervy towards the end.
Armstrong grappled Philogene and got a yellow. The free-kick fell to Diop, but Branthwaite was in line to block it. But Ipswich kept coming forward until finally after 9 added minutes, the referee blew the final whistle. What a slog.

I thought we might see George or Dibling from the start.
3 Posted 19/09/2026 at 14:03:58
Show ambition!!!
4 Posted 19/09/2026 at 14:09:50
In my opinion, it would be better to field the young players first to wear down the Ipswich defence.

6 Posted 19/09/2026 at 14:14:49
How is George not on the right? And Dibling played so well in midweek... baffling!
7 Posted 19/09/2026 at 14:24:32
Of course George amd Dibling should start! Still, gives us plenty pf options from the bench!
8 Posted 19/09/2026 at 14:27:52
Johnson was poor the other night; let's hope he is better today. COYBs
9 Posted 19/09/2026 at 14:29:50
See you on the Live Forum for the, ahem, Blue version.
10 Posted 19/09/2026 at 14:31:37
Barry needs benching as well so let's see if he can score... UTFT COYB
11 Posted 19/09/2026 at 14:32:58
Hopefully both he and George come on in the 2nd half.
12 Posted 19/09/2026 at 14:41:03
Why he hasn't picked Hackney is anyone's guess...
13 Posted 19/09/2026 at 14:49:21
And that was years ago!!
14 Posted 19/09/2026 at 14:51:42
The bus parker can/t avoid continuing riding his luck.

19 Posted 19/09/2026 at 15:48:59
Barry who everyone knows I'm no fan of, playing well, putting himself about, and a clever finish.
Garner is worrying me: too many loose passes Hackney on for me. Very pleased with Maitland-Niles.
I fancy 3-1 here.
20 Posted 19/09/2026 at 15:51:36
A brilliant steal off Enciso but, when he plays the ball forward, to where he himself should have been... guess what? He's not there, and Ipswich pick it up.
Defensive football from a defensive manager is so fucking boring.
21 Posted 19/09/2026 at 15:52:08
Dewsbury-Hall was having a stinker but then we worked out the best way to play Barry, if you can't hit his arse then hit him in the chest, they all count, but then we sat back and let Ipswich come at us even if they still seemed to want to keep 4 at the back regardless.
Moyes has to get the midfield working better and more together in transition as at the moment it either goes through Grealish or Dewsbury-Hall just inside of him, we need more variation.
Finally, Mykolenko carded when he didn't seem to even touch the Ipswich man.
22 Posted 19/09/2026 at 15:53:15
Pitch doesn't look great... that may explain some of the poor passing.
Take Dewsbury-Hall off, move Grealish inside, take Johnson off, and bring George and Dibling on. Then Hackney for Garner.
23 Posted 19/09/2026 at 16:06:22
24 Posted 19/09/2026 at 16:17:33
Typical Moyes not bringing subs on.
25 Posted 19/09/2026 at 16:26:41
Causing a goal to be disallowed and missing two sitters.
26 Posted 19/09/2026 at 16:54:32
27 Posted 19/09/2026 at 16:59:08
Johnson missed two sitters. I so want him to be successful but he's got to put those easy chances away.
Passing was sloppy and it looked like we thought it was in the bag and weren't really up for it?
28 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:00:59
Armstrong, Dewsbury-Hall, and Garner shocking yet no Alcaraz and Hackney on after 87 minutes... you couldn't make it up.
29 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:01:54
School of Science …..my arse.
30 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:02:14
We looked a lot better when Dibling came on and he set Dewsbury-Hall up for a sitter which he headed wide. George offered an outlet and there's something about him that reminds me of Gento, one for the oldies.
I thought the Ipswich player was hard done by for his red card and really the Ref should have just had a word.
If we are to improve, then the midfield has to start working together and I'm tending to think George has to be a starter, even Alcaraz probably before Johnson.
Who has Hackney upset and when will Rohl be available?
I didn't see the point of making the subs in injury time.
31 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:03:22
No lack of effort but poor decisions, mis-kicks etc.
32 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:05:52
But why did Johnson start ahead of George, or Dibling? Moyes has no excuses for playing a piss poor Johnson. Johnson hasn't produced a top performance since he got his first start.
Dewsbury-Hall is desperately out of form but continues to get 90 minutes. When will Moyes ever learn he needs to make full use of his squad?
Ipswich... 10-man Ipswich... almost earned a point! We got away with this one. We won't get away with many more if this is how we are going to perform on a regular basis.
33 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:06:34
VAR again ruining it. We also have to blame ourselves for chances not taken. On another day, we could have destroyed them.
34 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:06:53
35 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:09:03
He won't; he'll play this team till they can't raise a gallop -- like he did last season!
36 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:09:17
I wouldn't say we've played really well in any game this season, but we are unbeaten, we are keeping clean sheets and picking up wins. I thought Branthwaite again was immense. Maitland-Niles was making a difference on the right. Dibling again looking like a different animal to last season.
The offside was harsh: if Johnson wasn't in front of him, he still wouldn't have saved it. I'll take the 3 points and a clean sheet all day.
I think it's fine margins, and a few things dropping our way, a better finish, a final pass, and we can score a few. I'd play George from the off and bring on Grealish, and Dibling deserves a start!
37 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:13:00
I don't think we have too many players off on international duty, given the very English makeup of our team (and injuries too).
We should have scored more, thought that Barry's second was only disallowed based on the Manchester derby and it was a crap decision as no goalkeeper in the world would have saved that, was cruel on Barry who had another decent game.
Just seen the Brighton score, let's just take the win and move on!
38 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:14:18
Moyes isn't going to make wholesale changes when 1-0 up. The result comes first, with Dibling then George coming on at the right time.
The calls for Alcaraz coming on, when in control, aren't realistic. If it had gone 1-1, or 1-2 from a winning position, but a new midfield, would people be happier?
Most would say that it was thrown away by making unnecessary changes when in control. Take the 3 points when they're offered.
39 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:16:49
Dewsbury-Hall has been so poor of late and he only brings him off in the 91st minute for Hackney while Alcaraz is left on the bench, after scoring in midweek?
The referee was shocking, the keeper was never going to save it, we'll have ref watch with Gallagher on Monday, talking crap. Still, I'll take the 3 points.
40 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:17:43
41 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:22:23
42 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:27:14
Sending off saw us become at little more positive but overall, dinosaur tactics with hoof hoof hoof again back on show.
Flair players benched again. Johnson offered nothing except missing easy chances.
Take the points but a hard watch with the VAR decision a throw back from last weeks City cock up. Keeper was never getting anywhere near it no matter who was offside.
Dibling looked decent when he arrived but George looked well pissed off when he came on. Grealish I thought was excellent but KDH was way off his best as has been mostly the case since the season started.
Branthwaite majestic as per usual.
Small squad we have but need to spread the load and give those off the bench a lot more minutes than they always get.
Could have made changes long before we did but that's Moyes at his stubborn best.
43 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:27:40
Dibling must be amazed that Johnston gets selected ahead of him, as Brennan looks like he has zero confidence at present. Dewsbury-Hall was off-form again but kept running. I do wonder how badly he has to play before he is substituted. How did he stay on the pitch for 91 minutes?
44 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:30:05
If I was going to rest or take off KDH ismd put Johnson their and play Dibbling or Barry on the right.
KDH is always busy, fighting, trying things, turning, no other player in our squad offers what he does, if he was out the team I'm sure we'd all see a huge drop off in performance.
45 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:30:17
We were up,against 10 men playing for a poor Ipswich team. Changes were quite clearly needed. So to suggest the arrival of Alcaraz would have cost us the win is nonsense,
Your defence of Moyes come what May is beyond ridiculous
46 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:39:23
47 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:41:19
Must go!
48 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:42:15
You're fucking deluded if you think that. Thank God Moyes is in the dugout, and youre sat carping in the arm chair.
49 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:55:50
The number of posters complaining about KDH and Johnson cant be wrong. KDH used to make up for shortfalls in scoring but lately he is scorning easy chances.
Personally I would move Jack inside in place of KDH and put George and Dibling on the flanks. They are both young and fit as a fiddle and Dibling looks far more like scoring than Johnson does.
My other criticism is the number of times Pickford boots it aimlessly long yielding possession.
50 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:56:14
Of course you are sat there with your fully qualified statements of which no one should question because you are always right.
Which does not change the fact that players out of form need to be replaced. Or do you deny that certain players were struggling during that huge win over 10 man Ipswich?
51 Posted 19/09/2026 at 17:57:27
7 games played this season no defeats.
He is an idiot.
Original team was poor and substitutions laughable.
Thank god for luck!
Or just being a professional rather than a fan.
52 Posted 19/09/2026 at 18:03:51
53 Posted 19/09/2026 at 18:04:00
As poorly as KDH is playing, the very last player I would use to replace him would be Johnson.
Like it, or not, at this moment in time KDH is sadly out of form
54 Posted 19/09/2026 at 18:08:01
55 Posted 19/09/2026 at 18:15:11
Alcaraz should have been on, ridiculous by Moyes.
56 Posted 19/09/2026 at 18:15:24
David Moyes is a shithouse of a manager.

The same posters were telling us in mid August that we would be bottom, cant see three worst teams, moan, moan, moan.
I like a good moan, but will do it when the time is right and we are getting beaten every week.
At the moment were doing ok despite the lack of forwards.
61 Posted 19/09/2026 at 18:49:01
Toodallo.
62 Posted 19/09/2026 at 18:49:15
Were unbeaten. Well finish 9th. Woo hoo!
Another game of football happened. I suppose you could call it that. Theres no surprises, theres very few thrills (AMN and George goals aside) but theres also no danger for this season.
All you can sense in the stands is boredom and frustration, I look around and theres young lads on their phones. It could be so much better. Why are we sitting-off Ipswich when we go 1-0 up in the first half at home? It does nothing but give them confidence and make the crowd anxious.
Its fucking stupid.
Theres also a 3 week Int break coming for most of these players, run yourself into the ground, use the 5 subs, keep pushing. Scoring 3 or 4 is surely a more pragmatic and secure way of winning.
63 Posted 19/09/2026 at 18:51:14
Eveton are on unbeaten heading into the international break.
64 Posted 19/09/2026 at 18:59:03
What team and formation would you select next game?
65 Posted 19/09/2026 at 19:05:32
Moyes's stubbornness again sticking with underperforming players was almost a guarantee, which, could have backfired, but again thankfully didn't. Dibling and George, when they eventually came on, showed what may have been more positive, if started.
Another long break till our next game, hope those involved in International fixtures come back unscathed.
66 Posted 19/09/2026 at 19:10:30
What plenty of people do actually do is point out when wins and draws are not actually very good performances overall. Its not moaning, its analysis.
People do realise that results can actually flatter a team? That the season is 38 games long not 5?
The simple point is that Everton have a small squad and, despite an increase in creative players, a major problem converting possession into goals. To consistently leave someone who does seem to have an eye for goals on the bench seems strange to me. For supporters to just predict automatic disaster (against relatively weak opposition reduced to 10 men for the final 20 plus minutes) if the manager deviates from his safety first approach just shows those people have strong bias, not that they are necessarily correct.
67 Posted 19/09/2026 at 19:15:39
We get it -- you don't like Moyes... hell, don't we know it. Just be satisfied we are doing okay.
See your tip came up again John, hope you put the bet on.
Pleased for Barry even though I've been down on him lately, he's hardly prolific but he is scoring one or two when it matters.
68 Posted 19/09/2026 at 19:28:57
Hope you had a good day's gambling.
69 Posted 19/09/2026 at 19:36:28
I should be following you.
70 Posted 19/09/2026 at 19:41:07
You thought we were in control in those final 15 minutes? I was glad to hear the final whistle myself.
I thought it was another mish-mash of a game -- like most of the league games and the Wolves game the other night. No player stood out as outstanding but the goalscorer usually gets the MotM award so I won't begrudge him that if he gets it.
Branthwaite was leading on another website, can't think why. Tarkowski was better than him and Dibling is now producing much more in his last two games... maybe he needs to start having a go back at Moyes and asking for more time on the field.
"The manager sees them every day" is the cry from many — Dewsbury-Hall must be giving 10/ 10 every day in training... he's not doing much in the actual matches — but class is permanent form is temporary — could have fooled me.
71 Posted 19/09/2026 at 19:43:53
It's bordering on pathetic. Look at Spurs: £400M, new manager, attacking and losing. Man Utd the same, Chelsea the same. They all have strong squads.
There's the whines about why he doesn't play Dibling, he's a player still learning to keep the ball and use his strength which is lacking.
If Everton had gone down a goal or two early on, can anyone really believe we would have got back with the limited squad on the bench?
Moyes looks at the bigger picture and starts the games with a view to steady progress. So stop whining and look at the fact that Moyes has got us in 5th position and the team has progressed even while lacking a full squad. COYB.
72 Posted 19/09/2026 at 19:47:15
We all know exactly what he does. What team he will pick. Give or take an injury. What tactics. What pattern of play, etc. That he can't take advantage of weaker opponents, including if they are reduced to 10 men. His dawdling with subs. That Everton got away with it yet again matters not a jot.
Looking at the Opta stats was interesting. Everton officially had a combined total of 21 shots: 2 on Target; 11 off target. Maths may not be my strong point and the obvious sometimes eludes me, but where did the other 8 disappear to?
I'm delighted that we won. Having some luck every game is what the fans deserve. Now for an Infantino break. Yeee hah!!!
73 Posted 19/09/2026 at 19:48:54
I wouldn't take out , he'll come good. Calling for Alcaraz instead of Dewsbury-Hall, as some are, is madness. Even out of his best form as you state, he's still one of our key players linking up play, all over the pitch, working his arse off, not afraid to take the responsibility and try things.
If it was necessary to leave him out or rest him, I'd say Johnson would be best suited to that role, he's finding his feet, can't find them on the bench, and is probably our next source of goal if he can find his previous form.
As you would see my previous post, Dewsbury-Hall is levels above Alcaraz, I'm no defender of Moyes, but I think he sees we need goals from more than just our 1 striker and Johnson could provide that if he finds his form, position, links in the team.
Don't know how people give up on new players after a few games, even though we've not lost a match yet!!
74 Posted 19/09/2026 at 19:53:05
Blocked maybe? I'm assuming only saved shots count as on target?
But it's a big difference to when we were going 2 matches without a single shot on goal isn't it?
75 Posted 19/09/2026 at 19:57:23
I would swap Dewsbury-Hall for Grealish on the left and have Jack Grealish in the centre. Dewsbury-Hall has a wand of a left foot and is great at swivelling on it, but he can't go both ways like Grealish. Likewise, when the ball is out wide, Jack has to check back and can't naturally deliver the ball in or prefers not to with his left.
Tarkowski was brilliant again today, anyone suggesting him be dropped simply hasn't played football. He gets the best out of Branthwaite and will share an awful lot of "match nous" with him, which Jarrad will directly and indirectly soak up. Johnson no good. Get Dibling in.
I was happy with Maitland-Niles today, much better having someone who can at least pretend to be a right-back. O'Brien did a terrific job, but he's a tad cumbersome to be playing right-back. O'Brien will partner Branthwaite in the future, as long as we can fend off the vultures.
Again, we were screwed by VAR; a pure result of last week's controversy.
I want to restate: Three points in the bag. COYB. Let's stay unbeaten and see where this team can take Everton.
It's been too long since we had a "team" to support. Last time for me was the Cahill, Osman, Pienaar, Arteta days. It bodes well. Let's be patient and supportive.
76 Posted 19/09/2026 at 19:59:03
There is plenty to question, as Moyes is seen practising the same methods that produced the big fade last season. And please don't tell me Moyes did it on purpose to avoid Europe.
Time will tell whether this is the way or the results are flattering us. Until we get past the Chelsea and Arsenal matches, hold your friendly fire.
77 Posted 19/09/2026 at 20:10:23
But it's a shit watch.
78 Posted 19/09/2026 at 20:15:12
79 Posted 19/09/2026 at 20:15:13
My guess is those shots were blocked or deflected (to corners probably) anyway. It's a worrying stat as it shows no accuracy and probably a lack of solutions.
80 Posted 19/09/2026 at 20:24:41
A couple also went just wide and of course Johnson wandering into an offside position like it was for a corner. It could have been comfortable, not Moyes's fault there.
81 Posted 19/09/2026 at 20:55:21
I don't know why Johnson stayed on so long as he was anonymous for the most part.
They played Grealish far too often
with nothing happening down the right. Moyes was playing Johnson in the middle and his tenure at Spurs proves he is not a striker.
Dibling was worth the start today but only Moyes knows why he left it late to bring him on.
The break may help as it gives more time for Rohl and Norguard to get fit. Anyone know why Norguard is out ?
82 Posted 19/09/2026 at 21:03:05
I'm ready for a new manager myself, mate, but unbeaten, conceded less goals in than Arsenal, scored the same as Liverpool.
I know it's early days, and we made it hard today, but every win isn't going to be a perfect performance, whoever the manager is, mate.
83 Posted 19/09/2026 at 21:05:00
We should have been in complete control against 10 men, we should have put the game to bed, but we were sloppy and wasteful in possession.
We really need a clinical finisher or two. We felt pressured and nervous against 10 men. Delighted to remain unbeaten, but we have far bigger battles to come.
84 Posted 19/09/2026 at 21:11:23
Dewsbury-Hall has been fluffing his chances for a while now, I think it's got into his head and now he's actually trying too hard.
Dibling is ready now, hope he starts getting a lot of minutes.
Barry has improved but it was a pretty low bar, he's no battering ram, so giving Alcaraz and Johnson minutes up front as subs would do no harm.
Grealish needs to get Premier League fit, he could play the Number 10 with George and Dibling out wide.
Back four picks itself with some minutes here and there for O'Brien and Keane but would be beneficial to get some proper rotation in the 6 other outfield positions.
85 Posted 19/09/2026 at 21:17:02
Unfortunately, he couldn't convert. The late opportunity that Armstrong shanked horribly wide should have been passed to Dewsbury-Hall who was in a great position. Ipswich passed the ball around well, but I thought Everton were by far the superior team.
I like the fact that we have genuine strength in depth now, not just players making up the numbers. We are 2-3 players off challenging for the European places. This international break seems too long now. :-)
86 Posted 19/09/2026 at 21:23:15
Dave, I was pleased to hear the final whistle too. Today was about getting 3 points, and cementing a good start. We just had to get into the break with another win, rather than talking about a missed opportunity.
5 clean sheets in 7, Dibling playing well, Branthwaite fit, Barry scoring, options from the bench. Despite the summer shit show, there are things to be happy about.
John, to answer your question. Most play 4-2-3-1. We can't play 5 at the back, as we don't have wing-backs. I'd like to see a front three with George and Dibling. But I am realistic that will build through the season.
Dibling's confidence is growing, and I think suits coming off the bench against tired defenders when the game opens up. Would he have more of an impact if starting? I doubt it at the moment.
Hull will be dangerous from set pieces, so could Rohl replace Johnson? That would be my thought, although I like George a lot despite his defensive fragilities.
87 Posted 19/09/2026 at 21:33:09
But we have seen Moyes go on runs of good results before, only to run into problems emanating from his decisions on selections and substitutions. So that is all I am are getting at with the current criticism.
Also, we have had an early schedule of teams against which we should be getting results. Admittedly, he is up a few compared to expected points.
My post was just about the complaints of moaning and whining. The criticisms are not unfair, though given the early circumstances, perhaps a bit overvoiced.
The thought of him earning an extension is horrifying to us. Please understand our predicament.
88 Posted 19/09/2026 at 21:37:46
What I didn't like today:
1. Some players are struggling for form and should have been substituted earlier (Dewsbury-Hall, Garner, Johnson).
2. We weren't dominant, despite having the numerical advantage.
3. Somehow, no one seems to know where the goal is.
4. I didn't think it was particularly fair of Garner to call for Fatawu to be booked.
What I liked:
1. The effort was spot-on, as always.
2. Armstrong showed promise again.
3. Maitland-Niles and Dibling played very well.
4. Having the 2-0 goal disallowed (with every decision going against us, a decision going our way gets closer).
Hopefully, players like Garner, Dewsbury-Hall, and Grealish will return in better form after the break; Röhl should be fit again, too. Despite our current form, I'm a bit more optimistic than I was after the transfer window.
89 Posted 19/09/2026 at 21:44:51
I reckon we bring back Sean, the Spanish twat... or maybe Koeman -- yes, they'll do the job, hey.
I never wanted him back, but he's here so let's give him credit, we are not going to be flirting around the drop zone but we will be around the European places and for that we should be grateful.
Very very happy tonight... and why wouldn't I be?
90 Posted 19/09/2026 at 22:03:21
Branthwaite was way off the pace and Johnson was, well, Johnson. After sitting through that, the 3-week break is welcome.
91 Posted 19/09/2026 at 22:05:09
The team struggled today but not down to tactics but players giving the ball away too easily, except a few, but there were more than 3 or 4 doing it, so it wasn't a matter of substituting a couple of players.
Our small group can now rest up and other players can get up to speed -- not a bad position to be in.
93 Posted 19/09/2026 at 22:08:58
We know David Moyes but it is becoming boring on this site when we always moan about what we already know. It is mind-boggling, it is not interesting any more. It just seems like an agenda after every match -- win, lose or draw.
Moyes will leave at the end of the season and I hope so -- not that I hate him... no, but he's old now and he's not a young manager, he is in the past/ But he can leave on a high by winning a trophy for Everton, at least the League Cup.
94 Posted 19/09/2026 at 22:13:00
People have such an agenda against Moyes it's laughable… Remember many on here wanted Amorim and Thomas Frank etc once upon a time, so I take their opinion with a big pinch of salt.
Many here have never played football to a decent level, even recreationally, and it shows. It's not always puppies and rainbows, Pep fooled the whole world into thinking the game has to played “beautifully” but it doesn't. I enjoy the scrappy, fighting, tortorous 1-0 wins just as much as the 4-0 thrashings….
Just enjoy life and have a glass half-full, for fuck's sake! 5th in the table going into an international break with a team that many on here were saying would fight relegation, it's sooooo cringe….
Squeaky bum time is fun too when we pull it off. I enjoy the relief afterwards… When Man City used to crush teams every week and pass them to death for 4-5 seasons under Pep, I would turn off the TV and not watch their games because it was boring as fuck!!
So it can swing both ways… Armchair fans who have never played football to a decent level, giving advice to the manager with the 3rd most games in Premier League history, with the smallest squad in the league and can't even fill the bench some weeks, makes me laugh my head off.
What a funny old game.
95 Posted 19/09/2026 at 22:15:19
Give some credit to Dibling who should be ahead of Johnson, and showed today and in midweek that Moyes is way too conservative.
How can Moyes leave Alcaraz on the bench after turning the game against Wolves, and watch Dewsbury-Hall for 91 minutes, and how poor he's been lately is unreal.
Gary O'Neill with 10 men was making offensive changes and Moyes was the complete opposite.
96 Posted 19/09/2026 at 22:25:06
I don't have too much of a problem with your appreciation of Dewsbury-Hall but I don't agree that his general effort level should make him immune from some level of squad rotation.
Also, I find your apparent enmity to Charly Alcaraz getting some more game time very odd as I don't know how you have come to know that player so well in the limited exposure he has had and despite some obviously positive contributions.
Tom (@81), how do you think being ‘most vulnerable when you have just scored' actually works? One thing it shouldn't require is any decent team actually needing to tactically restrict themselves to a low block.
97 Posted 19/09/2026 at 22:27:41
98 Posted 19/09/2026 at 22:27:50
Moyes says he wants goals so doesn't play the guy who scored a pearler in the last Premier League game? Where's the logic in that?
Don't get me wrong, pleased with another 3 points... but judging by the few bits I saw, I'm so glad I don't pay to go the game anymore.
99 Posted 19/09/2026 at 22:37:43
In Johnson's case, it has to purely be on the hope you can reproduce a glimmer of what you had but lost a while ago.
Tremendous opportunity for someone like Johnson because his career was all but over, but I wonder if he has it in him. But got to keep George on the bench.
100 Posted 19/09/2026 at 22:44:11
Just go, Moyes -- don't accept a contract extension at the end of the season, just go, please, if you can hear me or read this -- it's for your own good and the good of the club.
101 Posted 19/09/2026 at 22:49:35
Ipswich had 4 shots accredited as on target. We are so so weak. It's alarming that we cannot hit the target. Even when stood in front of it, alone. No defenders. No pressure.
If I was a manager, I'd have em back at the Hill Dickinson Stadium practising finishing with some of the numerous reserve goalkeepers inbetween the sticks. Let off some fireworks (or a fog horn) just as they are about to shoot or head. Fine them for each failure to finish, say 1 hour's pay per chance.
Scoring = you don't have to walk home.
102 Posted 19/09/2026 at 23:01:32
For as long as we're looking up the table, Moyes has my backing.
103 Posted 19/09/2026 at 23:23:30
Agree 100%; I've posted on us playing 4-3-3 previously.
104 Posted 19/09/2026 at 23:29:48
I'm presuming you played at a decent level?
105 Posted 19/09/2026 at 23:55:35
You are “very very happy“ with that performance?
Lord, give me strength.
106 Posted 19/09/2026 at 00:12:50
If a worse team than Ipswich come to us this season, I would be very surprised. The manager's tactics sickened me today. Go 1-0 up then sit in for 20 minutes?
We did not control the game when it went 10 v 11 at all. We allowed ourselves to come under pressure from a 10-man promoted team.
He had George ready to come on when the Iprswich player got sent off but sat him back down. Can anyone explain that one please?
107 Posted 19/09/2026 at 00:32:08
Our bias is in favour of Everton and Everton only. Sorry for speaking for all.
Moyes has players he trusts at 1-0 and players he doesn't. He'll never change. This time, it got the win. Hey ho!
108 Posted 19/09/2026 at 00:54:02
This definitely wasn't our best match, a few players looking tired after midweek. But it's a sign of a good team to win when you're not at your best. On another day, with Johnson a yard or two in either direction, it's a comfortable 2-0 win.
The 21 shots is still a good sign, that's a few matches now where we're consistently creating more opportunities. We've all seen defensive or conservative set-ups under Moyes, with the shot count in single figures.
This is starting to look like a decent team, the centre-back pairing (that some were saying we should break up?) is one of the best in the Premier League. 5 clean sheets and only three conceded in 7 matches is as good as it gets. Tarkowski is again silencing critics.
109 Posted 20/09/2026 at 01:25:36
There's a great player in there. He really could be dynamite.
110 Posted 20/09/2026 at 01:41:49
I see absolutely no sense in continuing to play someone who is so out of form currently.
I am not doubting Dewsbury-Hall's ability and I am sure his form will return. But it's madness to keep someone going when they clearly aren't playing well.
As for using Johnson in place of Dewsbury-Hall, his form is even worse and I have serious doubts we will ever see the Forest version. He shouldn't even be first choice right now.
I have no idea why you think so badly of Alcaraz, given the small sample size you have to look at. It's not like he has been given a long run in the team.
111 Posted 20/09/2026 at 01:52:05
We didn't play that well, but if the chances had been taken, we'd have won very handsomely.
112 Posted 20/09/2026 at 02:25:03
And 100% of us knew you'd turn up with your trigger finger excuse-making fpr Moyes.
113 Posted 20/09/2026 at 02:35:48
Jarrad Brainthwaite:
Jordan Pickford :
Tyrique George:
Tyler Dibling:
Harrison Armstrong:
Braiden Graham:
Tom King
Vitaly Mykolenko:
Brennan Johnson:
Jake O'Brien:
So I hope the Moyesiah arranges for a couple if not 3 behind closed door games.
He has
Travers
Maitland-Niles
Tarkowski
Keane
Garner
Hackney
Dewsbury-Hall
Alvaraz
Grealish
Barry
and possibly
Rohl
Norgaard
Plus U21 players.
It will help keep Jack away from the Shandy and others to get minutes in their legs with the coming slog through to 1 January. Then hopefully we will bring in at least 2 or 3 players.
114 Posted 20/09/2026 at 02:37:11
It's the sort of muddled Moyes-think that led to McNeil playing on the right last season while George and Dibling watched from the bench.
115 Posted 20/09/2026 at 03:15:09
Still, it was a nice warm-up as we await the start of the season proper in 3 weeks, plus a handy 9 points carried forward.
116 Posted 20/09/2026 at 04:11:03
My link stopped and the sound went off.
117 Posted 20/09/2026 at 05:51:53
Just mediocre is the honest summary.
118 Posted 20/09/2026 at 06:01:19
It wasn't two matches, more like eight.
119 Posted 20/09/2026 at 06:23:45
Sean (#94); And what is Moyes, with the third most games as manager in Premier League history, trophy to games ratio over his career -- is it anywhere near the number of clubs he's moved on from? And are we only 5th until the round is finished?
John (#106); When was the Brighton man sent off as I was busy watching the Everton game?
120 Posted 20/09/2026 at 07:42:31
121 Posted 20/09/2026 at 08:20:36
◆ 6 shots, 7 if Armstrong should've played him in;
◆ 1 big chance missed;
◆ 40 out of 44 pass completion, 2 of those misplaced were risk passes that tried to get us into good attacking positions;
◆ 2 key passes;
◆ The corner that barry scored off;
◆ The cross that was put in and cleared to Tarkowski;
◆ A drive forward that got Fatawu booked;
◆ A decent cross that Barry couldn't do much with that led to the Barry corner;
◆ 5 ball recoveries;
◆ 65 touches;
◆ 11.3 km ran;
◆ Ground duals won: 4 from 7;
◆ Travelled with the ball: 158 metres
He might not of had his best game, but he was working his arse off, and was prepared to pull the trigger and affect the game. His work rate probably makes up for what a player like Grealish isn't going to put in, it's where George might snooze off. Alcaraz doesn't quite have that.
6 attempts on goal is something we don't see enough of, if at all from our midfielders. The last time we had 7, was Sigurdsson in 2018.
The coachimg staff will value the above of him impacting the game. Would Alcaraz be doing more? I don't know.
122 Posted 20/09/2026 at 08:34:52
I have to say I am feeling very optimistic about the potential of our group of younger players. Armstrong and Hackney seem to have the nouse to receive the ball in space.
As for George and Dibling, I have seen enough of them to think, by the end of the season, we wiil be a real threat from either wing. They can both go past a man and shoot with either foot.
123 Posted 20/09/2026 at 08:41:13
My own view is that it's possibly become a little bit personal between Moyes and Alcaraz, but that's just a guess and not something that they teach you on those coaching courses!
Seriously though, good on you for getting those coaching badges, Ian, because it's obvious that you love football, but coaching and managing are two completely different things, and I'm sure that this is something you would completely acknowledge yourself, mate?
124 Posted 20/09/2026 at 08:44:27
Let's see where we are at the end of the season, when it really counts.
125 Posted 20/09/2026 at 08:49:16
Great post. He could have scored two on another day. Meaning he is getting into good positions. One back post for Dibling's cross. And only if Armstrong had laid it to him, he would've had an empty net. That was a great support run.
Also, we had 21 shots to their 13. xG 2.31 to their 1.3
Watching it back on the highlights, we had so much better chances, should have been my prediction of 3-0 Hey Ho!
Still we are in a great position going into the break in the European places, depending on today's games we are 5th; lowest will be 7th.
126 Posted 20/09/2026 at 08:53:23
Yep, good point, but we can only play what's in front of us.
Thing to watch out for is Sunderland, Crystal Palace will have the hard treadmill of Thursday and Sunday with all the travel.
All three hovering just above the relegation places. It's a hard season for those three.
127 Posted 20/09/2026 at 09:08:58
Where in my post did I say I was happy with that performance? I said I'm very happy tonight and rightly so.
Still unbeaten in the league, in the next round of the cup, and keeping clean sheets.
There was some terrible passing yesterday, main culprits being Garner, Dewsbury-Hall and Branthwaite, but we also created a lot of chances... unfortunately we couldn't take them.
Les, if you're going to have a pop, at least get your facts right.
128 Posted 20/09/2026 at 09:31:30
Positives:
Unbeaten in 7 games.
Only 3 goals conceded (only bettered by Man City, who play today).
Creating lots of chances.
VAR and refs trying but failing to stop us.
Dibling and George look like they will be good.
Getting results whilst our best players are yet to find their best form (Garner, Grealish, Dewsbury-Hall).
Tarkowski and Branthwaite look a great pair.
We aren't Tottenham!
Our finishing needs to improve for sure as we are creating plenty of chances. I also read that Barry has had more shots than any other Premier League player, is this true?
He looks set to smash his tally from last season (touch wood) and is developing into a decent striker. If it starts to click, then I hope we can look forward to some entertaining games, as sometimes it can seem a bit dull. Hull away when we come back, fingers crossed we win that and keep progressing.
I didn't realise we had so many players off on international duty, I forgot about the U21 squads but the positive is that we have so many promising youngsters!
129 Posted 20/09/2026 at 09:34:53
He parked himself close to Grealish which over-stretched our midfield, but did not combine well with Jack in the final third. When a player's game is off, it really shows in the work he does around the opposition box.
Kiernan is a far better player than Alcaraz but he is not playing well, and at some point that has to be addressed. Personally, I would drop him into the No 8 role and play Hackney as a No 10.
130 Posted 20/09/2026 at 09:39:06
You shouldn't be “very very happy“, precisely because of that performance. But, hey ho, each to their own, I suspect.
131 Posted 20/09/2026 at 09:56:39
It looked quite simple, John, Grealish was out of the game for a while so he was going to bring George on. He then got on the ball and started driving play forward again in probably his best spell of the game, so the change wasn't needed.
Nonsense that, I'm afraid.
132 Posted 20/09/2026 at 09:58:39
No it wasn't a great performance but besides the goal, both Johnson and Barry should have sent us in 3 goals to the good at half-time.
I thought the first half was the worst I have seen Branthwaite play, he misplaced passes was hesitant and gave away a needless corner; thankfully he was back to his brilliant best in the 2nd half.
I wonder if bringing Grealish back is going to help or hinder in the long run, there is no doubt he is the one player who can keep possession in the opponent's half but his goal return is poor and if he starts then that leaves 3 players competing to play wide right: Johnson, Dibling and George.
I don't think Dewsbury-Hall or Armstrong were at their best and at times Garner wasn't having his best game.
I thought Mykolenko was our best performer, he was up against a very quick and tricky winger, who stupidly got himself sent off for diving.
I thought the ref had a good game and, as many suggested, was over-ruled wrongly by VAR for Barry's goal.
So not our best performance but the most important was getting the 3 points and as it stands with still a couple of games over the weekend to be played, we are 5th and into the next round of the Carabao Cup, probably better than our most optimistic fan would have predicted.
Finally, well done Dibling -- after an awful season, he is now beginning to show the sort of form he produced at Southampton. I thought it strange that, in the slew of subs we made, despite scoring the winner in midweek, there were no minutes for Alcaraz.
133 Posted 20/09/2026 at 10:00:05
Not with you there?
134 Posted 20/09/2026 at 10:14:27
We can't judge Alcaraz because of the small sample size of appearances (25-ish), but you're judging Johnson on 7 appearances?
Look, I'm not saying Johnson is playing g great, obviously he isn't, but if we got him in some form, he could be a huge plus and source of goals, if that's up top, on the right or off the striker.
I'm not advocating anyone to play if they are playing badly, but if the team is picking up results with so many out of form players as some would say, is that a positive?
If these players come into better form, it will show in results and performances from the team.
135 Posted 20/09/2026 at 10:33:48
I don't think Alcaraz would feel happy -- he must be scratching his head wondering what he has to do to get a run?
136 Posted 20/09/2026 at 10:44:18
Why shouldn't I be happy with the way the team has performed? Are you happy with the way the team has performed under the likes of Lampard, Benitez and Dyche???
I'm tired of saying this, I'm no lover of Moyes and didn't want him back but he's here and I'm going to get behind him.
Or are you content with fighting at the other end of the table because it sounds like that to me... Anyway, Les, enjoy the rest of your day -- I know I will.
137 Posted 20/09/2026 at 10:57:08
A player that is probably appreciated by teammate and coaches, more than the crowd.
Steve, I don't disagree on the Number 8 call. I think Dewsbury-Hall is probably a mixture of a Number 8 and a Number 10, with the reality being he isn't quite top-drawer to be the best at either.
In terms of characteristics, Dibling looks more like a Number 10. Garner & Dewsbury Hall in the middle, and George outwide with Grealish. Would be great going forward, but would need to be pretty disciplined out of possession, and would leave pressure on set pieces, where still 25% of goals are still scored, which is a concern when Jordan isn't the best in those situations.
Tony, I'd like to think it isn't personal. If it was, he should have been sold in the summer.
In terms of development, yes, Alcaraz has missed out. But Dibling, Armstrong & George aren't. All three have a higher ceiling than Charly, in my opinion, and where I'd be supportive of minutes being given as things currently stand.
What I have learnt in coaching and management is you can't keep everyone happy. All you can do is keep it honest and transparent.
138 Posted 20/09/2026 at 11:21:51
Part of the reason the teams we have played are among the lower reaches of the league is that they have been unable to beat us!
139 Posted 20/09/2026 at 12:12:19
He said Garner and Armstrong weren't at their best, he actually looked quite happy too lol.
I still think we'll struggle to get anyone better than him in to be honest. The players all work hard for him and you don't hear many gripes.
I don't think ToffeeWeb is a true gauge of how most fans feel about him. [Puts hard hat on...]
140 Posted 20/09/2026 at 12:20:50
141 Posted 20/09/2026 at 13:14:18
I agree totally, mate. All the players refer to him as an inspiration. He is a great man manager and I hear from the likes of Baines and Coleman that he is even better this time round.
Appraently the plans are shared with each player and each player has an input and he is flexible on those inputs.
The intensity and quality of the training and levels of coaching are second to none. He is builidng a very cohesive group and the spirit and culture is improving drastically.
He is a hard worker and is bringing a resilience, winning mentality, and levels of competition for each place.
Contrary to views on this site, he is very good with young talent.
142 Posted 20/09/2026 at 13:20:40
Well while that's true that Ipswich have won 2 games, Man Utd and Palace have won 1 each while Bournemouth and Spurs have won none.
Peter, I know you're an honest man -- would you say we have been outstanding in any of those matches? Would you agree, if we had shown more attacking aggression in some of the drawn games, we might have more points than we have?
143 Posted 20/09/2026 at 13:28:58
If we had, we'd have been sitting pretty in top spot, so I think we're doing okay. We rarely get anything at Spurs, even when they are complete and utter shite.
144 Posted 20/09/2026 at 13:39:28
Excuse me while I change me underkecks!
145 Posted 20/09/2026 at 13:42:17
We beat Palace but could have been 2 or 3 down at halftime. The Man Utd and Spurs results were about right. We scrapped for a point at Bournemouth, a tough place. We deserved the win yesterday. We have progressed through two rounds of the Carabao Cup.
I don't think we have been outstanding at any time, but we have played some good football. I don't find Mr Moyes particularly inspirational, but we could just as easily have dropped points had we been more adventurous.
We are doing okay. And your man Jordan has kept 5 clean sheets!
146 Posted 20/09/2026 at 14:24:06
The ambition of the club and fans alike is on full display with this monumental achievement!
Congrats.
147 Posted 20/09/2026 at 14:44:27
We have two young wingers who will both be top, top players but I've been a little disappointed with Hackney and Armstrong in the last two games; but they are young and have time to improve.
I don't think you can keep blaming Moyes, the players have had plenty of opportunities to show their attacking abilities and come up short. I'm leaving George and Dibling out of that criticism because Moyes has been careful when to use them, you can argue both ways on that.
148 Posted 20/09/2026 at 14:47:03
I'm not having a go at George, I'm impressed with him but his a one-man band, where Jack brings other players in to play. Moyes: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
I hope Moyes doesn't ruin Hackney and Rohl. Rohl who is an international central midfielder.
149 Posted 20/09/2026 at 14:48:46
Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and recognise when the manager has done a good job.
150 Posted 20/09/2026 at 14:50:47
Some of this is the players but some of it is Moyes. We have been here before, just with a larger squad.
And Kevin, I recognize that. My concern is that Moyes is overly relying on a core group. As they tire, I am not sure other players will have the experience to carry us.
151 Posted 20/09/2026 at 14:51:30
I promise I'll stop laughing…..eventually.

Although I would not anchor my preferences on Garner and Armstrong to start.

Contrary to views on this site, he is very good with young talent.
He just doesn't give them much game time.

If it had come from the person who the comment was directed at, it might have been more useful.
Having now seen the extended highlights of the game to fill in the visuals for the OS commentary, I can add my opinion on the two big reffing decisions.
The disallowed goal is the, unfortunately, very predictable result of an over-correction to the pitiful performance of a VAR crew in the Manchester derby last week. I don't expect any consistency going forwards because the interpretation for subjective offside that was used yesterday means that, anytime an attacking player in proximity to the goalie as a corner is played in, who then ends up ‘offside' for any successful strike on goal, will now have to be ruled out as the ability of the goalie to roam freely will have been ‘impacted' by the ‘offside' player.
There was no way the goalie could have saved that header unless he had been positioned much closer to the back post so the VAR team essentially said the offside player had impacted the goalie's ability to make a save before the header that made him offside occurred.
This takes us into ‘Minority Report' territory on corners where the obvious intention to actively limit the movement of the goalie by attackers has now been judged to be an offence if a goal is scored in the same phase of play, when it has never been an offence previously.
Will we get the apology we should? Will this ridiculous interpretation ever be applied to anybody else? It's doubtful, isn't it... and yet no apology should mean the second becomes the universally applied rule and every team should automatically push every defender a couple of yards forwards as the corner comes in if any attacker is within touching distance of the goalie.
The second yellow for diving that meant Fatawu was sent-off seemed fair to me, but whether that level of penalty will be applied consistently is unlikely. Expect to see players from the ‘bigger' clubs get a ticking off for simulation outside the penalty box rather than a second yellow.

I think you have some views on “Calamity” yourself, Peter?Best wishes and good health as always.

I'd point to a podcast with Tim Howard, Donovan and McBride, who all gushed about how good he was as their manager; Arteta and Cahill also sing Moyes's praises in this regard, and many other ex-players.
It's not enough in the modern game though, tactically he's not keeping up with the modern game, old ideas; there's nothing new in what he's doing, he's doing what he's always done since Preston.
Every opposition knows before playing Everton what formation it will be: 4-5-1. They know how we will play. We played the same against Man Utd, Wolves and Ipswich... Where's the innovation, the tactical twists, the shifting of positions to take advantage of opponents' weaknesses?
The players may come in and out but it's the same gameplan. We must be the easiest team to set up against, for opponents. Team talk goes like...
"Playing Everton today -- same as last year, boys, we know what their going to do!"
I don't want him sacked right now, I believe he could put us in a more attractive position by the end of the seson, a better proposition for a new fresh approach.

Alcaraz isn't the answer because he's just not as good as some people seem to think but also they need to take a look at Harrison Armstrong. It's obvious that he's got a lot of talent but he also has a long way to go. His decision-making is slow which means he often brings attacks to a crashing halt and his shooting is woeful.
Hackney is the man but I have a feeling Moyes is never going to start him and Garner in the same team.
161 Posted 21/09/2026 at 09:33:29
The ones I recall were a fine header from near the penalty spot, a curled right-footer from the edge of the box, and his goal against Wolves.
All top finishes. So it seems to me, if he gets an opportunity, he is odds on to score. He is a finisher. If I am correct, surely he will be given opportunities shortly.
162 Posted 21/09/2026 at 10:32:57
We were lucky in every game in my view, and could easily have lost them all. Will we get away with it all season? I highly doubt that. A losing run is always just around the corner with Everton.
7th after 5 games, and we could be in the top 4 on goal difference. Unbeaten but I'm still not sure how -- obviously happy with 7th after 5 games, but it feels like a very delicately held position based on the games we've witnessed.
Also, I don't get why people waste their energy complaining about Moyes -- he's never going to change so you're wasting your breath. You know what you're going to get every week and moaning about it is going to give you an ulcer.

Dale @ 150, the players have had plenty of opportunities to show how good they are. I'm excluding our youngest players, and as far as creating chances and scoring goals is concerned, they are not close to the best.
If they are not good enough what's the point of blaming the manager as if it's all his fault?
164 Posted 21/09/2026 at 11:43:47
Yes, we weren't very good on Saturday. But I've seen us play well plenty of times and get beaten.
165 Posted 21/09/2026 at 11:56:19
And there are considerable reasons for cheer. Whisper it, but despite the Friedkins' best efforts, what business we did do in the Summer was outstanding. £15M each for George and Hackney, £4M for Maitland-Niles, and swapping out McNeil for Johnson, I don't think we've had such an effective window for years in terms of bargains.
And the best bit, we have three outstanding teenagers who look set to go right to the top. Mykolenko and Tarkowski have started well, and Branthwaite is fit. So, really, it's all good.
Just need to get rid of these dickheads.
166 Posted 21/09/2026 at 12:28:34
The difference is that we have real quality and quality of character this time around. KDH, Grealish, Branthwaite, Garner, Myko, Tarks, etc. Not only that, but I assume the very prominent gaps in the squad will be addressed in January.
Seven or eight more wins is all that's required; once we're on track for that, we can start to look upwards.
167 Posted 21/09/2026 at 12:51:59
As a couple of our players don't have the best history in that department we need to start saying our prayers about now.
168 Posted 21/09/2026 at 12:58:52
Joe Thomas finished on the Liverpool Echo at the weekend. Sad what is going on in the UK printed media.
169 Posted 21/09/2026 at 21:02:59
We've already battled our way through a few games without a couple of players in our squad who have been laid low with mysterious, non-specific 'small' injuries...
Norgaard and Rohl.
Yet we've managed to remain unbeaten, and Moyes continues to deploy minimal squad rotation and the most parsimonious of substitutions...
I do wonder if this whole squad size thing has been rather overblown. As he demonstrated at the end of last season, Moyes will happily oversee poor performances while leaving young and keen replacements on the bench, or just ignoring them altogether.
170 Posted 22/09/2026 at 07:37:50
I thought that the way our squad was left very unbalanced in certain areas at the end of the transfer window was totally unprofessional but a part of me was already thinking that this might have been partly due to the way David Moyes has always operated.
"He is a great manager, imagine what he'd be like if he got money," is something I have read about Moyes down the years, but the more I study his managerial career, the more it becomes clear that he has always operated with a small squad.
Is this through choice though? My own view is yes, because I don't think he has got the charisma or the personality to manage a big squad... but this doesn't mean I'm correct.
171 Posted 22/09/2026 at 09:29:04
The exact nature of Rohls injury is undisclosed, and there doesnt seem to be much information about out there. Moyes did say this, however, on Friday: “Merlin is not available yet. Hopefully, hell be ready by the end of the international break.”
The injury that Norgaard is dealing with, is reportedly in the groin area. He remains unavailable and according to the last time that Moyes spoke on the situation, a week ago this past Friday, he hasnt even gotten back out on the grass yet in training.
So that sounds like a hernia problem for Norgaard. Just a 'small' problem, so they said...
