Mauro Icardi — Striker Solution or Toxic Distraction?

The summer transfer window ended in shambolic chaos for Everton, with the squad short of four players and the fanbase seething over gross incompetence that had seen Falarin Balogun walk away from Finch Farm without completing his £39M transfer from AS Monaco.

The abject failure to secure a second striker before deadline day with Beto sold to Fiorentina leaves Thierno Barry as the only centre-forward in a line-up where David Moyes requires a big target man up front at all times. 

The transfer window may have closed but there are still a few players without contracts in the free-agent market. Ad the Rumour Mill has been relentlessly grinding away... insisting that 33-year-old Argentine forward Mauro Icardi is a prime candidate for Everton to consider after his contract with Galatasaray expired this summer.

Here is the breakdown of the player, his track record, and whether Everton should touch this deal with a bargepole.

What he could give Everton on the pitch

In happier times, Icardi could perform as a pure penalty-box predator, with over 280 career goals, capable of finishing with minimal touches close in, or deft involvement in open play, excellent timing and spatial awareness in the box making him a lethal converter of decent crosses.

But he's not known providing much in the way of defensive contribution and offers minimal involvement in pressing or build-up play, which would be a massive black mark in the mind of David Moyes and his demand for high-intensity workrate and commitment off the ball.

Off-Field Controversies and Disciplinary Record

• Wanda Nara & Maxi López Dispute (2013): Icardi began a relationship with Wanda Nara while she was married to his Sampdoria teammate Maxi López, creating a high-profile media circus in Italy and Argentina, leading to the infamous "Wanda Derby" when Sampdoria played Inter.

• Inter Milan Ultras Feud (2016): In his autobiography, Icardi criticized Inter’s Curva Nord supporters, claiming he would "bring 100 criminals from Argentina" to deal with them, leading to fans demanding he be stripped of the captaincy. 

• Stripped of Captaincy & Exile (2019): Following prolonged contract negotiations managed by Wanda Nara (who acted as his agent) and public criticism of his teammates on Italian television, Inter stripped Icardi of the captain’s armband. He subsequently refused to play, citing an injury, before being pushed out to PSG.

• Argentina National Team Absence: Despite his elite goalscoring form in Serie A, he earned only 8 caps for Argentina, largely due to dressing-room dynamics and public pushback stemming from his personal life.

• High-Profile Off-Field Distractions: His ongoing, heavily publicised relationship sagas with Wanda Nara have repeatedly spilled over into tabloid headlines throughout his spells in Paris and Istanbul.

David Moyes values squad discipline, high work rate, and low-drama in he changing room. Bringing in an ego of Icardi's scale — along with his huge wage expectations and off-field circus — could easily disrupt team cohesion.

Unless Icardi is willing to accept a heavily incentive-based, short-term contract to prove his fitness, this looks like a classic high-risk, panic move that Everton hierarchy should weigh very carefully if they are not to create another enduring fiasco that will further alienate the fanbase.
