Opposition report: Wolves head to Hill Dickinson for League Cup reunion

Five games into 2026-27, Everton remain unbeaten. However, it’s now three straight draws for the Toffees, and with an extended international break coming up, David Moyes’ men could do with getting back to winning ways. 

A League Cup tie, at home, against second-tier opposition, represents a good chance to do just that, but at the same stage of this competition last year, Wolves knocked Everton out, albeit that game took place at Molineux.

It’ll be a different Wolves team to the one that last rocked up at Hill Dickinson Stadium, back in January, and here, we take a look at what to expect.

LAST TIME OUT

A last-gasp goal from Raul Jimenez saw Wolves snatch a 1-0 win at Sheffield United on Sunday.

Wolves are 7th in the Championship as it stands, having lost just once this season.

Everton have faced Wolves 147 times. The Toffees have won 65 of those fixtures, with Wolves collecting 52 wins. There have been 30 draws between these teams.

The Toffees have lost just one of their last five games against Wolves.

ONE TO WATCH

Wolves have a squad that should be more than capable of earning promotion back to the Premier League, and their strength in depth was on show on Sunday when they brought on Kieran Trippier, Tommy Doyle and Jimenez.

It is the veteran Mexico forward who Everton really need to be wary of. Jimenez has scored 6 goals in 12 games against the Toffees. He has only netted more times against West Ham (7) during his time in English football.

WHAT CAN EVERTON TARGET?

Defensively, Wolves have not been brilliant. They have already shipped 11 goals this season, and in their last match against what one might suggest is quality opposition — West Ham — they were dispatched 4-1.

Trippier is an experienced head, but if he starts at right-back, then either Jack Grealish or Tyrique George should be confident of giving the former Newcastle United captain a tough time.

Everton have demonstrated they can create chances so far this term, but their finishing has let them down at times. This is a great opportunity to be a bit more clinical.
