Everton vs Wolves - Match preview and team news

Everton host EFL Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Third Round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, with the Toffees looking to get revenge on the Midlands side.

It was the exact same situation this time last year, with Everton facing Wolves in the third round of the EFL Cup, with the fixture played at Molineux.. Goals from Marshall Munetsi and Tolu Arokodare sealed a 2-0 win for Vitor Pereira’s side and Wolves entry to the fourth round.

The current Everton side is stronger than a year ago, when David Moyes put out a fringe squad on the day.

The Toffees should be confident going into the cup clash. Still unbeaten in the league, Everton have picked up six points in four games. Last time out, despite a dull on-pitch performance, a goalless draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium seemed to be deemed acceptable. 

Jarrad Branthwaithe received plenty of praise from pundits and fans, and also the 24-year-old’s defensive partner James Tarkowski:

“He didn't play many games and missed a lot of football, but he's come back fit and flying, and you see tonight the quality he's got, Tarkowski said.

"The amount of tackles and blocks he makes, but also he’s very composed and comfortable on the ball. So hopefully that continues for him.” 

Wolves have had a decent start to life in the Championship this season, picking up 11 points from six games to sit seventh. Nine years on from a Championship title win under Nuno Espírito Santo, Wolves find themselves back in the second division. 

It’s been a decent start for Wolves, but a Premier League side away from home represents a tough challenge.

EVERTON TEAM NEWS

The Toffees are likely to be without Christian Noorgard, who is unlikely to debut until after the international break.

Furthermore, Merlin Rohl is likely to remain sidelined. The German international was unavailable for the draw against Spurs with an unspecifided injury. Jake O'Brien, Carlos Alcaraz and Tyler Dibling are among those who will hope for minutes after limited action so far this season.
