Duncan Ferguson has returned to football management, crossing the Irish Sea to take charge of Northern Irish Premiership side Glentoran on a multi-year contract.

The former Everton and Rangers striker takes over the Belfast club following the departure of former boss Declan Devine. Ferguson has been a freelance pundit since leaving Scottish club Inverness Caledonian Thistle in October 2024. He will be joined at The Oval by Gary Bollan as his assistant manager.

The club was founded in 1882 in East Belfast by workers from the Harland & Wolff shipyard, an industrial stronghold that historically employed a predominantly Protestant workforce. Their home ground, The Oval, sits right in the heart of East Belfast, under the shadow of the shipyard’s famous Samson and Goliath cranes.

Speaking on his appointment, Ferguson emphasised his ambition to end the club’s long-standing silverware drought.

“I am delighted to become manager of Glentoran. This is a big club with a tremendous history, and it is a great opportunity for me,” Ferguson said. “I want to win trophies here. Glentoran should be challenging for the title and every cup and shield we enter.”

Contrasting Reputation and Record

While Ferguson’s status as a Premier League giant is unquestioned — stemming from his high-profile playing days and stints on the coaching staff at Everton, including two spells as caretaker manager — his permanent managerial record presents a starkly different narrative.

ClubTenureOutcome / Context
Everton (Caretaker)Dec 2019 / Jan 2022Stabilized the side in short-term bursts, earning high praise and a famous win over Chelsea.
Forest Green RoversJan 2023 – Jul 2023Won just 1 of his 18 matches in charge as the club suffered relegation from League One.
Inverness Caledonian ThistleJul 2023 – Oct 2024Suffered relegation to League One amid severe off-field financial and administrative turbulence.

Despite these challenging spells in the English and Scottish lower leagues, Glentoran owner Ali Pour opted for high-profile pedigree over local familiarity. The club currently sits 3rd in the Irish Premiership table following a steady interim spell led by Tim McCann and Paddy McCourt, though they remain eager to capture their first league title since 2009.

Glentoran sporting director Paul Millar noted that the vacancy drew significant external interest, but Ferguson ultimately won over the board with his long-term vision.

Ferguson’s first test in the Glentoran dugout will come this weekend with a home fixture against Ballymena United, as he looks to establish an immediate foothold in the title race.
