Everton’s Brennan Johnson played the whole of Thursday night’s Nations League game at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon against Portugal, where the home side took the lead in the first half.
Wearing Number 11, Johnson played quite centrally in the Welsh attack, preferring the right side but, because Portugal dominated possession, Johnson was regularly forced deep into his own half to form a compact defensive structure, limiting his availability as an immediate outlet.
Wales have struggled to push out from their defensive third, with limited possession, they have generated 0 total shots across the team so far. As a result, Johnson has been completely starved of service in transition.
But he got a huge chance with some great running through the middle, taking a nice cross on his chest, albeit a little too strong contact that pushed him to the byeline wide of goal — from where he produced an audacious lobbed shot over Diogo Costa in the Portuguese goal, it dropping down and hitting the bar!
From there, it fell for two Welsh players in the goal area but they got in each other’s way and failed to turn it over the goal-line, and it ended as a narrow defeat for the Welsh national team.
