Jordan Pickford played the full 90 minutes but Jarrad Branthwaite had to wait for his first England cap as Gareth Southgate’s side were beaten 1-0 by Brazil at Wembley tonight.
Branthwaite was named on the bench but Lewis Dunk and Joe Gomez were preferred as substitutes to the young Everton star while former Blue, Anthony Gordon, made his England debut.
England were without a host of regulars, including Harry Kane, Jordan Henderson, Carl Palmer, Kieran Trippier, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, Jack Grealish, Luke Shaw and Kalvin Phillips, while Ben White did not want to be considered for selection.
On the other side, previous Goodison favourite Richarlison was not picked to lead the line for the Verde-Amarela and watched on from the bench.
England had only won four of their previous 26 games against Brazil, most recently a 2013 friendly and their last meeting was a goalless draw in November 2017.
This evening’s edition of this fixture was heading the same way when the visitors narrowly beat the offside trap and Vinicius Junior was played in with just Pickford to beat but while the keeper came off his line and deflected the initial shot, the ball fell into the path of Endrick who knocked it in.
The 17-year-old had only been on the pitch for nine minutes but ended up claiming the winner.
Elsewhere, Seamus Coleman made his return to the Republic of Ireland team after a year out and played the whole game in a goalless draw with Belgium. Amadou Onana came on in the 64th minute for the Red Devils.
Earlier in the week, Vitalii Mykolenko and Ukraine took a step closer to Euro2024 qualification by beating Bosnia 2-1 in play-off group B and, in Under-21s action, Youssef Chermiti scored on his debut for Portugal at that level in a 4-0 win over the Faroe Islands.
