THE BALLAD OF DIXIE DEAN |
Gerry Markey, 1996. |
The lead track on a special cassette marketed by the Liverpool Echo for Christmas
1996 celebrates the greatest goalscoring phenomenon in the history of English
Football: Everton's Billy Dean, better known by his unfavoured nickname, "Dixie"
Dean.
Brian Labone admitted that The Ballad of Dixie Dean filled him with emotion when he first heard it performed live by Markey. Dave Hickson idolised Dean and believes that every Evertonian should revel in this story of the greatest centre-forward of them all. Strangely, the song avoids mentioning Everton anywhere in the otherwise excellent lyrics... The cassette includes two other Merseyside songs in the folk style:

The version of Everton's timeless battle-cry , Royal; Blue Mersey, is just excellent. An extra verse brings this song bang up to date. And the source of those Lapland tones from The School of Science can now be revealed as none other than Osmo Räihälä, a talented musician from Finland, and obviously a dedicated Evertonian. Retail Price: £11.50 on CD; £8.00 on cassette, from the Everton Megastore / Mail Order |

The original songs on this obscure tape were written by John Bryan in 1991
and appear to have been featured in the musical, 99 Heyworth Street.
The first track has been updated for this funky enterprise:
Despite its poor audio quality, the tape is well worth getting for the unique Everton lyrics of the first track. However, the second track sounds like Les Miserables meets Hear My Song... Retail Price: 50p from the Everton Megastore / Mail Order |
