EVERTON FA YOUTH CUP, 2002-03

Everton's Youth Team reached the final last season — with the help of EIGHT goals from Wayne Rooney.  But things are different this time around...

Everton's youngsters could not emulate the achievements of their peers last season, as they lost to a solitary goal against Port Vale in the 2nd Round, and thus went out of the competition at the first hurdle.

There are no replays in the FA Youth Cup again this season.  Ties must be settled on the night, with extra-time and then a penalty shoot-out, if needed.  The semi-final and final are played as two-legged affairs.  All matches are played at the home side's senior stadium.

Steve Milne   The lack of fire power — no Rooney; no Symes — cost us dear tonight.  Booth's 35th minute goal for Port Vale was the killer: Reid from the right, a cross with pace, Booth the header past a couple of defenders, not to mention the Everton keeper.

Our best bits:

  • 7 mins: J Jones from 30 yards had a shot; very weak, not on target.
  • 12 mins: Everton's Booth made a good run down the right wing, crossed the ball into the box, Garside the target, just over his head.
  • 23 mins: J Jones from a corner, on the left, fired it over the front of goal; no blue shirt able to finish the move off.
  • 27 mins: Hopkins stole the ball from a hesitant defender 40 yards out, ran on from inside the box, shot, but the keeper smothered the ball; he had better options to his left, he just did not look up.
  • 28 mins: Garside stole the ball, ran on his own, saw the keeper coming off his line; he tried to chip the ball, just over the top of the goal.
  • 36 mins: Brown made a great run from midfield down the right, pulled the ball back, from inside the area, Hopkins was about to pull the trigger, and the defender dived in to make the block tackle.

Half time:  Everton 0 - 1 Port Vale

  • 68 mins: Brown had a shot on the run from distance on target.
  • 71 mins: Hopkins with a header just wide of the right hand post; Booth with the cross from the right.
  • 76 mins: B Moogan with a 25-yard shot just over the bar.
  • 78 mins: Brown fired in a ball with power, a pile of players in the box and a Port Vale defender from 1 yard out somehow turned the ball over his own bar.
  • 79 mins: From the resulting corner, again the defender cleared the ball off his line.
  • 82 mins: Hopkins ran from midfield, from the left-hand corner of the box, shot turned round the post by the keeper.
  • 83 mins: Throw-in headed on by Garside in the box, Brown, snap shot on target, was straight at the keeper who made a comfortable save.

We had a few chances to score, but nobody able to provide the final punch to all the chances we created.  Not the best F A youth cup display I have seen over the past few years.
