Fernandes

Watched Portugal v Holland last night in the U21 Euros. Manu was outstanding, he is definitely the player we should be building our midfield around.
It's almost not nice watching him play because the thought of him not playing for Everton next season is horrible. Here's hoping, fingers crossed and all that.
Just on a side note, some of the talent in that game was unreal, wonder if DM has his eye on any of these players. Portugal must be a real breeding ground of talent.

I watched the game as well last night. I wasn’t too impressed with Manny’s performance to be honest, and although it is of no interest to us blues, I thought that Nani guy of ManU was worthless.
I’d still like to see Manny in royal blue next though! And what about that Drenthe of Holland?
Manny played very poorly in that game, looked completely disintereted almost from start to finish. A few flashes of brilliance but was outshone but most of the others on the pitch.
I also watched the game last night. Manu seed to be at his best when he came looking for the ball, when Portugal looked good it was through Manu’s resiliance, looking for the correct pass to split their defence. Despite this he faded for large parts of the game, just strolling around the middle of the park waiting to be involved, not really looking for the ball. Theres no doubt he would fit nicely in our team, but i can understand DM concern over the transfer fee. It will be intresting to see what happens as there has n’t been much media speculation linking him anywhere else..maybe other clubs dont value him at the £12 M mark either. The worry is if we dont ever gamble on talent or quality like this, will we ever buy a player over £10 million or offer wages more than 40 K a week?If we want to challenge the top 4 we havent a chance until someone decides to take a risk.
Erik, that Drenthe guy was superb, imagine him playing for us, he’d be ideal.
I thought Manu was good, you guys don’t seem to be to impressed. He can smash a ball and he has great upper body strength to hold off players.
As someone who lives in Portugal and so I see a lot of Portuguese football, Ross is right that the country is a tremendous resource for young talent. They have excellent academies and youth football schemes throughout the whole country which consistently produces technically gifted and physically strong athletes.
For me, Manu was pretty much par for the course yesterday - flashes of brilliance and long periods of anonimity. The player who IS worth 12 million now, be it Smarties, Euros, Pounds or Dollars, and who would make a huge impact on our team is Joao Moutinho - the diminutive midfielder.
Both at international and club level (he plays for Sporting), everything goes through him and he is always available, very rarely wastes a pass or loses the ball. Believe me, he would evoke comparisons with the Holy Trinity if he ever pulled on a blue shirt. Sadly, the word in Portugal is that he is possibly moving to Arsenal.
Agree with that poster who mentioned Drenthe of Holland. He was absolutely unbelievable. What a winger. Just what we need...
On rating of Poor fair average good and outstanding, I would rate Manu’s performance as average. He does have some great skills when he actually tries...
I may be going against the majority here but from what I saw of Fernandes last season, I honestly don’t think he is worth £12m.Granted he has fantastic control, obvious ability and I thought he brought the best out of Arteta. But when he went missing he was largely anonymous. Also, talking of our mercurial Spaniard, £12m for Manu what then realistically for Arteta?
Furthermore, Manu’s cause is hampered by that prick Joorbachian in the background and whole issue of "ownership". With the entire Argentinian fiasco at present would you really want to spend a big lump on the boy and then end up like West Ham?
Fundamentally, we all know deep down that Fernandes is a gonner and its time to focus on who we could get. I’ve heard growing rumours about Wes Brown’s arrival? Can anybody shed any light or insight?
I thought he did alright yesterday. It is true the 12 million price tag is to much but if the price was any lower I’d snap him up. What people have got to stop doing is judging him by his price tag. Arteta in most away games hardly touches the ball. If you can tell me a realistic midfielder who dominates the game at 5-12 million. Scholes dosen’t. Gerrard has his moments but has been poor this season. Fabregas fades when the going gets tough. Lampard just stands by the oppositions goal and waits for a shot. Not many midfielders now a days do dominate. Manny has his flaws but they are only small details. If anyone is going to make him a workhoarse then its Moyes. Just look at Arteta when he first came. If we invest in Fernandes then we know where getting a very talented player who will get better and better. I am a very big fan of his. We cant be going into europe with Cahill and Carsley as our two centre mids. Both of whom cannot pass a ball. Manuel Fernandes has pace, strength, skill, passing and shooting and with Moyes he will also get better defensively.
Again I too watched the game last night and to be fair Manny looked good on the ball but did spend large chunks of the game in complete anonymity! People keep stating the £12M price tag although I?m led to believe its £8M (Thus 12M Euros) still I?m off point the lad is 21 and has plenty of time to develop more how many ?World Class? players were the finished article at 21 in a hard working Everton team he will become more consistent and less and less anonymous. I state our own Arteta and ?I wish it were true but lets be realistic? Riquelme as examples of this great at first then a little quiet and now totally world class.
Come on Everton take a chance on him I think he will be a real asset!
Looking at the Official site and they are harping on about Fernandes and a bad night for Portugal U21s. Correct me if I'm wrong but he ain't our player. EFC have had loan players before and I can't remember them being mentioned on the official site a month after the season is over.
Either we intend to sign/loan him or not and it would be nice if the "powers that be" would inform us either way after all it's not like it's a secret signing that would rock football to its foundations, no real need for cloak and dagger on this one.
Still, I guess its about as good as it gets for Evertonfc.com, probably the most boring site in football, things like "EXCLUSIVE - BEATTIE GOES SHOPPING" do nothing for me.
Benfica's 1st team squad for the 2007 season is on its OS. I find it strange that Fernandes's name is nowhere to ne seen. If they don't have him, who does? Is Davy keeping us in suspense or has Benitas or Mourino pulled a fast one? All will be revealed or will it?
Connor Rohrer:"Arteta in most away games hardly touches the ball." - is this a wind up. Arteta is our most creative player, read the match reports here or subscribe to Everton TV and watch the highlights, if there is something good in our game its down to Miky. Spurs, Arsenal,Newcastle,Villa, Reading etc in every game he either scores or gives assist. We have one world class player and there will be some idiot, who also thinks that our neighbors have better fans than us, to come out and have a go at Arteta. As Marsh would say take your head out of your arse.
With all due respects chaps from a business and football perspective you dont call £12M a punt.....unless you are chelsea.... when you only have limited resources you have to get it right......with as much certainty as possible!
I think Moyes should be applauded for being bloody clever in the transfer market. He has bought 5 players.....AJ MA JL TC and TH for a combined figure of £20M that are today worth £75M in my humble opinion.
If he can bring in another two or three quality players for £10 to £20 million then i think we have the makings of a team that can challenge for a top 4 spot.
Perhaps not this season but next.Building a football club to compete with big clubs with bottomless pockets takes skill, judgement and a steady nerve.
There is no room for Bravado...and at this level of football...a squad that pulls together and where the players respect the pecking order is important as having players with good technical ability.
You pay some Mr Average cant be bothered might be £60K per week and suddenly you have a changing room full of very unhappy players.
Of course moyes gets it wrong....the home game against Spurs will be with me for a very long time. And i am sure DM is as dissapointed as everyone else with DB.
But DM has been in the job for 5 years and i cant remember the last time i spent so much of the summer worrying about other teams pinching not one but several of our best players.
I think that speaks volumes about how much the club has progressed. Like everyone else i want a top 4 place......and i am confident that with a couple of estute additions.....and a bit of luck...we can get it.
Would i spend £12M on MF....i would only spend that sort of money if i knew the man was going to deliver.....not might, could or should.....or on the basis that he might grow into a player of the Arteta mode....i would point out that MA did not involve £12M upfront......if he had he would not be with us today.
When you are in the Junggle with big tiggers wanting you for lunch and a limited supply of bullets...you pick your targets very carefully.....and you dont use up your limited resources unless you know you have a clean kill.
All that said i expect three or four good quality arrivals and like everyone else i am scan the papers for any hint of a deal.....i dont care if it is made up......for christ sake i even by the dailr mirror at the moment!!!
Hold up a minute John Gouter but I actually go to every away match so I can have my own opinion on how Arteta performed. I was going a bit to over the top with that comment but in some away games last season he was completely anomynous. Im the first one to admit that Mikel is are best player. But if he plays bad then I have the right to critise like I would with any player. And when did I say Liverpool fans where better than us. I stated I would like to see more atmosphere at home games. The problem with you is that your to bitter. If I want to compare us to the shite then I will. If I want to critise a player then guess what I will. People want Fernandes to dominate a game from start to finish? Which one of our players actually does that. Arteta, Carsley, Cahill, Van der Meyde, Ossie or De silva. None of them.
I am saying exactly the same - lets sell the anonymous Spaniard, he is just a waste of space, running around like headless chicken, the little anonymous knob head, he is so poor, he hardly touches the ball. I wish we could swap him for world beater like Nyarko or Gemmil, they are the players we need hard-working world beaters. Sell the useless twat to Liverpool and their Spanish hordes.
Seriously John get a life lad. Im trying to make a point whereas you just want to argue. I cant argue with people who dont know anything about football. Arteta is a great player but so is Fernandes. All im trying to point out is that while people have been wanting Manuel to dominate games they need to look at the rest of our players. Arteta while very creative dosen?t take the game by the scruff of the neck.
Connor Rohrer’s comments regarding Arteta reflect what I have been saying for some time and it’s you, John Gouter, who actually has your head up your jacksy.
There is little doubt that Arteta is a very good technical player. However, he has NEVER performed against the top clubs while virtually all of his ’outstanding’ performances have been at home against inferior opposition. He is certainly not a great player as such players perform to a high standard week in week out, home and away against all opposition; Steven, Reid, Bracewell and Sheedy were therefore great players in my book.
In my opinion, Arteta looks a cut above the rest because he has been playing alongside average players such as Carsley, Kilbaine,McFadden and Osman for the past 3 years. If he was such an outstanding talent why were Rangers and all of his previous clubs happy to offload him so cheaply? It is quite amazing that he could have been chossen player of the year ahead of Lescott who has performed CONSISTENTLY against ALL opposition this year.
You are both spot on, thats why I am saying sell him.It is really quite amazing that he could have been chosen player of the year 2 times in row, never mind skysports Midfielder of the Year. The daft Spaniard is missing against the big clubs, such an average, overrated player its crazy.
Really what has he done against the big boys, did he cross the ball for Cahill’s goal against Liverpool, for Davenport’s own goal, or the sublime one two with Osaman for the second against Spurs, did he score against them at Goodison; where were he against Arsenal away, why didnt he cross for Cahill’s opener or for the winner in the reverse fixture;did he put trough M. Fernades with perfect weighted ball for 2-0; did he score against Chelsea or maybe he crossed for Yobo’s second,or released Osman on the Bridge for Vaughan’s goal, or few minutes later provided great cross again only for Cech to parry superbly?!?
Lets get rid of this Rangers reject, he is shite, sell him now.
John Gouter are you having a laugh?
No one is saying get rid of him soft lad. He is a good player and are best by about a mile. But the fact of the matter is he does go missing in big games. And where not talking about his assists or his goals we are talking about his all round play. If you actually understood football then you could argue but obviously you dont. End of conversation.
