Best Everton Own Goal

Comments (8)

Great post re our worst team ever! What about great Everton own goals?

Being too young to see Sandy Brown's classic, my two personal 'favourites' are Henry Newton's fabulous diving header from outside the box (can't remember who we were playing but it was c.1972) and the ultimate classic Mick Lyons backpass from the halfway line against The Shite. I'll never forget sitting in the main stand at Analfield watching it loop over George Wood! Anyone got anything better?

Surely buying Koldrup and wasting millions in the process was the biggest own goal of all time.

Mike Newell I think it was in the early 90’s against Southampton at the Dell (I think we drew the game 2-2), a great header from just inside the penalty area!

Tommy Wright’s effort at Selhurst Park in May 1971 was quite spectacular. It was one of the best near-post diving headers I have ever seen by either attacker or defender.

The "own goal guy" for me is Phil Neville.. I am surprised no-one has mentioned him!! Great one against this year?s home game against Man United and the previous season when we played Liverpool - now that was a corker!!

Didn’t Everton give Alex Nyarko a contract one year longer than his work permit - classic and could only come from the worst managed club I know.

Big Dunc vs Pompey @ GP 05/06. A near post bullet header from a corner, lost 1-0 and cost me a fiver!!

Phil Neville’s goal for Manchester Utd does not count as an own goal as he continues to be a Manchester Utd player. I cannot for the life of me understand how they give him a blue shirt every Saturday as it is obvious where his loyalties lie. My favorite own goal was Mick Lyons’ as I had a fiver on him to score. I am old enough to have watched Sandy Brown’s happen - in slow motion it seems now - from the Paddock with my dad. At least with Sandy there was never any doubt who he was playing for.
