Everton and Europe

Comments (4)

I have figured out by looking at Everton's current co-efficient and looking at the clubs left in the Qualifiers and Intertoto what will be needed for us to be seeded in the forthcoming UEFA Cup.

I have calculated the following teams are seeded higher than us:

Blackburn, Lens, Hamburg, Athletico Madrid, Sampdoria, Haifa, Partizan Belgrade, FC Basel, Zenit St. Petersburg, Austria Wien, Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, Partizan Belgrade and Galatasaray.

As we are currently 31st, we can afford to drop 9 places. That means that of the 14 teams named above, 4 of those must not progress to the first round in order for Everton to be seeded. I would think my information is 90% accurate but I think I am right.

I’m pretty sure you’re right for most part, but you forget that there will be some clubs incoming from the 3rd qualifying round of the CL. The losing teams, of course.

Possible teams:

Liverpool Eng 112.618 Sparta Praha Cze 37.851
Arsenal Eng 104.618 Fenerbahçe Tur 36.791
Valencia Esp 99.374 AEK Athens Gre 36.415
Sevilla Esp 87.374 Dinamo Bucuresti Rom 34.255
Benfica Por 67.107 Slavia Praha ** Cze 32.851
Ajax Ned 65.995 Rosenborg BK ** Nor 31.509
Werder Bremen Ger 63.640 Spartak Moscow Rus 27.920
Celtic Sco 62.064
Steaua Bucuresti ** Rom 55.255
Lazio Roma Ita 51.808
Glasgow Rangers ** Sco 47.064
Shakhtar Donetsk ** Ukr 44.726
Besiktas ** Tur 43.791
Anderlecht Bel 41.594
Dinamo Kiev Ukr 38.726
Levski Sofia ** Bul 38.112

The points are the UEFA-coëfficients those teams got. It’s a pretty big list, which is a disadvantage to Everton. But seven of those teams (the starred ones) have to play the 2nd qualifying round as well so have a harder path, and I expect most of those teams to qualify for the CL anyway. Fact remains that probably at least six teams will get in from the qualifying rounds CL.

Ok, gonna hit the submit-button now, got no clue as to how the lay-out will be...

Oh and by the way, there’s only 13 names in your list and two times Partizan Belgrade. So Maybe the 9 out of 14 should be 9 out of 12?

Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk is by far the most exotic name indeed Nick. But I guess it also means a huge travelling-time and all, which we’ll probably pay for the league-match next weekend...

Sorry your calculations are incorrect according to the following link www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/seeduc2007.html. There it shows Everton in 31st place but has assumed the stronger teams froms the earlier rounds qualify for R1 e.g Partizan Belgrade and Galatasaray are at 24th and 29th respectively. We only need to worry about the Intertoto and the CL failures. The Intertoto does not have many teams ranked above us and assuming the weakest teams and those with the lowest rankings get dumped out of CL then we should be seeded for Round 1. We may be bottom seeds for the group stages though.
