The Mail Bag

A ringing endorsement

I`m proud to say I am a great admirer of Bill Kenwright and in awe of how far David Moyes has brought us since taking over the reins from Walter Smith.

In spite of the frustration about lack of summer signings, all Evertonians now focus on challenging for honours rather that the perennial battle against relegation of previous eras. That alone is a sign of the great progress the club is making.

I may be out of step with fellow supporters, but I think that starting the season with last year`s line-up will be a huge advantage over those clubs who have blown their budget on new signings-most of them of very dubious pedigree.

As someone pointed out, we already have a squad of 24 players and with only a couple of additions, we should again be a force to be reckoned with. If we can replicate last season`s position, the decision not to waste the `Kirkby money` on the little talent on the market will be more than vindicated.

Of those 24 listed players in the first team squad you could argue that 6 of them are youngsters brought in to add numbers and paint over the obvious shortcomings of the first team squad. I could also add Andy van der Meyde's name to that, as he has offered little or nothing bar headlines away from the pitch. A few knocks here and there and this Everton squad will struggle.

Of the 24 players, 3 are untried kids which leaves 21, 3 of them are goalies which leaves 18 outfield players. of the 18 outfield players we got da silva (moyes unsure of) beattie and van der meyde (who he clearly doesnt want)and valente (constantly injured). That leaves us with a base of 14 outfield players for the season - of which we are relying heavily on 2 youngsters in vaughan and anichebe.

so dont let the ’24’ squad players fool you - we are at least 3 1st team regulars short this season. so many evertonians are being fooled its so worrying !!

And let’s have none of this "If we need to we can strengthen in January" nonsense. We could be out of all cups and struggling in the league by then!

Sieze the moment!

For fucks sake please stop this pathetic stomach churning idiotic

Well put,Seb!I’m no great fan of the Kirkby move but for £30M it seems a snip-and just think of all that money it will free up for transfers when we’ve moved.Just for once,Bill may have got his prioities right.

Of course now we can see very clearly why Moyes was so keen to sign Jagielka. He has known all along that he will have a small squad, so he needs to sign players who can play in multiple positions. Expect us to also sign Smith because he can also play in midfield.

Is this what a side which has just qualified for Euroope has come to? When the most important criterion for a new signing is that he can play in many positions?

Must differ from the view expressed by Sebastian. I, too, have a fair bit of time for DM. I can remember too well the days of whisperin’ Walter.
However, what has Kenwright done to deserve our respect and pride? I am tired of hearing how he saved us from agent Johnson. Unlike many contributors to this site I do not lay claim to have an in depth knowledge of how football works and is financed. We are asked to believe that Johnson was akin to Dick Turpin without the mask. Maybe he was.
This much I do know.Probably the two greatest cock-ups in the history of EFC occurred on Kenwrights watch.....namely the failure to secure the way for building the greatest sporting venue in the world and for the sale of the brightest talent to come through our ranks since the heady days of the 1960’s. Any leader with any pride in himself would have fallen on his sword for either of these events.
Seems to me that people are still swayed by his " I am the biggest Everton supporter in the world" bullshit.
Well it don’t work for me I’m afraid. I want a leader with vision and if it means, first of all, someone to sort out the marketing and catering fiasco’s associated with this club, rather than securing a white elephant in Knowsley then so be it.

Peter, how do you know it is only going to cost £30m for the new stadium? Nothing is down in black and white. What happens if it cost us £50m? There goes next year’s transfer kitty. When I see it all down on paper, then I’ll believe it.

Bravo Brian, I too asked this question a few weeks ago when someone else made claim to the whole asbodome costing £30m and to claim the squad size is nothing to worry about just look at that squad, most won’t see the light of day and expect a few to go on loan or stay in the reserves. Beattie couldn’t buy a goal and Van der Plonk is a waste of space and wages.

Ray well said about the January bit too but these same rose tinted believers are happy to wait until September before accepting our fate when it’ll be too late to strengthen and no doubt numerous excuses and bullshit will be wheeled out as per most years with phantom bids and players costing too much or my other favourite not available, when a contract these days isn’t worth the paper its written on anything and anyone can be bought at the right price, with Billy Liar we can’t afford lidl or netto never mind claridges

What happens if Arteta gets injured? where will the creativity come from? I will tell you it won't and it will be dogs of war shit which, for a club of our stature and supposedly growing in strength over the past few years, is a disgrace.

Has anyone else noticed the second we are 'close' to signing a player another smaller club jumps in with double the transfer fee? Seems like they are saying well if they're good enough for Everton we'll have 'em! Maybe the echo could stop pointing out who we are actually going for and spread some rubbish so that the Wigans and Sunderlands of this world end up with an even bigger bunch of shite players!
