Wise Words?

Re-reading the programme from the first home game versus Tottenham for the 2001-02 season at Goodison, (a game incidentally where I lost my 'lucky scarf' ? a scarf which had travelled to most of our triumphs in the golden era of the mid-eighties). In the said programme, Bill Kenwright was in his first full season in charge and some of his observations make interesting reading some seven years later.
His closing paragragph states 'The club was formed by fans for fans. EFC is many things to many people but above all else it is YOUR club'. He also acknowledges that 'those with blunt blades will invariably fall by the wayside. Our blade has to sharpen. It's as simple and as difficult as that.'
Perhaps the most telling thing that Bill stated at the time was 'I have always subscribed to the traditional theory that a man who does not heed warnings, who will not learn lessons, is not only a fool unto himself but a positive danger to those around him.' It's not for me to draw any conclusions but it would be nice to know if Bill had anything different to say at this moment in time....

I don’t think he would have anything different to say. He has learned the lesson of not spending huge amounts on over the hill 30 somethings. He will not spend huge amounts of money on the gamble that we will make the Champions League like Leeds. The club will continue to build a squad of young talented players and not pay over the odds for average players just because Wigan or West Ham do. He has kept the ticket price relatively in check, especially in comparison to many other clubs, allowing the fans to come see their team without having to spend their entire pay check.

Nice to see a little serenity amongst the panic! However, I do think quality additions are required and Sol Campbell would provide cover and warrant the occasional first team slot. Does anyone else see the link between Beattie going to Boro and their failed bid for Smith. I for one hope that it comes to pass.

David, Please elaborate on how any clubs have paid "over the odds" for anybody? You dont have to gamble any more like Leeds did because more than what they were chasing has just fallen in BK’s lap. The fact is that this season each and every premiership club will receieve a minimum of £45m just from the new tv deal (£10.5m just from overseas rights). This will naturally over-inflate the market, however this is based on available money.. Those clubs mentioned (regardless of foreign investment which is another issue!) and others such as fulham, would not have spent that kind of money on those players last year but that was becuase it wasnt available then but is now and will be for the next 2 years after this. Which then begs two questions, based on generally accepted figures for spending last summer of £5m for Lescott and £8.6 for AJ; How can Everton only be in a position for one more signing? and Where has all the money gone?
