Simic

Sky Sports are reporting we've missed out on Simic again. I'm guessing it's true because we've been linked with him quite a bit under Moyes. It seems odd that Moyes should be looking at his defence so much. I would have thought that we were covered quite well in all positions except left back. Jags, Stubbs, and Neville could all cover if we lost Yobo or Lescott for a game or two. Neville, Hibbert, and Jags are competing for the right-back spot. Even at left-back we have Boyle, who I'm guessing will be in the senior side this year, Lescott, and Valente. Perhaps Simic can play on the left, I always thought of him as a centre-back, myself.

This strengthening of the defence has made me wonder whether we'll be taking the Liverpool approach in the Uefa Cup this season and putting 10 men behind the ball at all times. I must admit, I was working during the first leg of the Bucharest game the other year and I couldn't watch the highlights so I'm not sure how our defence faired that night but does anyone think this is the right approach? I'm sure we'd all love the bulk of our cash being spent on a creative, attacking player but what we want and what we get are two different things. I prefer to not focus on it and let the manager get on with it. Whatever Moyes may be, he strikes me as a meticulous planner so I hope he'll be ready for the challenge next season.

From what I can remember in Bucharest we where quite comfortable in the first half,no problems with the defence then we just fell apart. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but I think Valente was at fault for nearly every goal. Aslong as we don’t have one of those games, e.g 0-4 Bolton, 1-4 Blackburn we should be ok until we come up against one of the stronger teams e.g Bayern Munich then whatever we do we will need to be lucky to claim a win.

All very well to play 10 behind the ball in the UEFA cup but what happens when following a Thursday night trip to Russia/Ukraine we have a tough premiership match. The boys will be fucking knackered! We have absolutely no depth to the squad. What happens if Vaughan and Johnson were both injured at the same time? Yobo and Lescott? It happens (Newcastle last season) and if it did to us,a relegation scrap would definitely be a strong possibility. Even if injuries dont strike due to other clubs additions it still might, simply due to lack of numbers rather than quality. If Riquelme, SW-P, Baines and Smith sign in the coming weeks then I will never entertain a doubting thought towards Moyes or indeed BK again, but I fear there is more chance of Gordon Brown shagging Cherie than that happening.

The club’s transfer budget per season has rarely changed over the years but Moyes’ transfer policy has changed. Instead of buying a load of average players per year, Moyes has bought one or two players that can improve the first team. This means that we can have a great first team and squad, full of good quality players but we’ll have to wait about five years for it. I don’t think this is a brilliant plan, if it indeed is their plan, because by the time we’re in the position to have that great squad the age of the squad will have gone up. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that the spine of our team is quite young nor is it coincidence that we don’t go in for the likes of Viduka.
