Swiss Invasion

Does anybody else think that the potential signing of Johan Vogel could be a deciding factor for fellow countrymen Bastien Geiger and Bruce Lalombongo as to whether they would like to play for the club?

This is a really good buy-if it comes off.
Vogel is just what we need, good positional sense, strong tackler, great short passer, knitting the play well and always available to recieve the ball-all the things that Neville isn’t. If bought, he should be first choice for the holding role.

A few more like this will do very nicely.

Does anyone else think he has a look of Tobias Linderoth?

I think Bastien Geiger had a trial here but was deemed not good enough but the other fella is supposed to be class and Real Madrid were reportedly sniffing around! Maybe Vogel could have a word in his ear because he is very well respected with swiss players!

He’s another utility man with bags of experience. At the start of his career (at Grasshoppers) he played central midfield, centre half and full back... sounds like Jags and Neville actually!

I agree with Ray that Neville is not as acomplished in midfield... I know he’s a great fella & everything, but I don’t know why he’s captain - for me, he’s not in our strongest starting 11. At the mo, Carsley is the holding MF player and does a great job, what position should Neville play?

Cahill should be skipper without doubt. First name on the team sheet, one of the lads, and leads by example. What do you reckon?

I agree that Neville probably shouldn’t be skipper as we’re going back to the Weir situation where he shouldn’t have played, but was captain......
Cahill is an interesting candidate for captain, but would the more obvious choice not be Lescott? We need a strong, imposing character and I assume that Jags is ruled out as he is new to the club, but does Lescott not have exactly what you want from a captain? He’s consistent, positive, agressive and would definitely get my respect!

Phil Neville is our captain primarily because of his professionalism. Despite limited ability he has 50 England Caps & PL & CL winners medals. I definitely think he is our strongest right back.
I would really like to see us have a central midfielder with good passing ability who can help us move towards School of Science football - hopefully this will be Vogel

My main choice would be Alan Stubbs but he is obviously getting on a bit. Neville is a much better player than Tony Hibbert and could fill in for Nuno at left back.

People seem to have ripped into him all last season when in my eyes he played well and was very useful. I see him as battling out with Jagielka at right back and filling in for the odd game in midfield. Why Lescott? Lescott may be big but he seems a very quiet centre half to me. If him and Yobo are going to be there at the back then someone has to tell the other what to do. Thats why when Stubbs came back we tightened up. Yobo and Lescott respect him because he is a leader, and evertonian and a talker.

Lescott isn’t just big, he has presence and that’s what counts. I may be mistaken, but I think he has what it takes to become a good leader. I agree that Stubbs is a great captain and I even wanted him back as captain after the Sunderland saga. However, we have to look to the future and I don’t see Stubbs playing consistantly as I think Yobo + Lescott will be the CB partnership. I also realise what a top bloke Neville is, but he is a very limited player in many respects and the 2 issues can’t be confused. I think next season Jag should be our no.1 RB with Neville covering all along defence and in midfield if really needed, and if he shouldn’t play every game he can’t be captain, it’s that simple!
