Vaughan's injury illustrates how paper thin the Everton squad is right now and it'll probably put the skids on any transfer of Beattie out of the club. Alan Irvine's suggestion that he could just be out for a couple of months is actually on the optimistic side and it wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility that he could be out until November.
Now I know Dutch, Doddy and Co will put a positive spin on this regarding the potential blooding of youth players, but we all know that isn't Moyes's style. Expect a return to 4-5-1 with a midfield packed with utility men who work hard and tackle well. Lescott will spend the season at left back and there will be an over-reliance on Stubbs. I really fear for us in a season that could potentially add another 15 or so games if we make any progress in the Uefa Cup.
The squad simply needs more bodies. I know the official organ wheeled out Alan Stubbs to comment on the unrest of fans expecting more transfers, but the idea that the club would rather have one really good signing than four average ones simply isn't good enough. Most posters to this site see the addition of at least one player in each department as a priority. Okay, I'll admit Vogel would provide cover for Carsley, but if Pienaar style deals are our future we'll have the same disappointment as most felt after the Fernandes fiasco. We just can't survive long term at this level with these perennial problems financial constraints.
Since the Kirkby stadium is supposedly being put on a plate for us, you really have to wonder what has happened to all that Sky money that the likes of Sunderland have been dishing out like penny chews. Two years ago according to Wyness we were the best run football club this side of the Orion Nebula, so surely it can't be debt, unless the deal for Kirkby has been signed already. I for one don't feel the money issues has been adequately explained.
