The Kirkby Project

Comments (45)

In all the talk about moving to Kirkby, the thing that totally puzzles me is the lack of understanding, by the Everton Board, regarding the depth of feeling of fans about leaving the city. I am not a Goodison for Ever fan, although I will be sad when we leave the old girl. I voted for the move to Kings Dock because it was exciting, innovative, and it would have been in a prime position in the CITY and our profile would have been raised enormously. This would not be the case with Kirkby.

I do believe we need to have a new stadium, but we must not leave the city.

I was born in Liverpool, but now live in Chester and I love driving through the Tunnel, up Everton Valley, then walking alongside Stanley Park and seeing Goodison (don?t always get the same feeling coming away from a game ? but that?s another issue!) and a large part of this feeling is about coming back to the City.

The Everton Board must somehow be made to see the error they are making, but they seem blind to the fact that Everton was born out of the City of Liverpool, has been raised in the City of Liverpool, has had success in the City of Liverpool, is loved in the City of Liverpool, and must not leave the City of Liverpool.

So how do we get through to the Everton Board? Well frankly I don?t know because I believe they have a mindset that, no matter what the result of the ballot is, Kirkby is where we are going ? hence no Plan B.

As for the role of Liverpool City Council, don?t get me started on them. The way they have given in to the other team in Liverpool has totally sickened me. Again why hasn?t our Board been hammering on their door demanding equality in the way we have been treated?

I wish I had an answer but I, like a number of supporters, feel we are being stitched up and we do not really count.

Artist impressions of Stadium.... What do you reckon? Artist impressions are always a bit fancy but seems like a nice design.

I wrote the other day to say that my vote depends on the type of stadium we would build. Wyness told us that fans don't like the new bowl shape and the design decision for our stadium was influence by this. Looking at the two pictures on the Official Website, I have to say that I think it looks cheap, old-fashioned and plain.

I like stadiums to have fans all around, to contain the atmosphere. This looks like a bigger version of a League 2 ground. I am not impressed, not even slightly. Some months back I looked at FC Köaut;ln's ground when that was the suggested design and hoped that this was scare-mongering!

Kenwright told us the Kings Dock was well researched, based on Ajax and Schalke's grounds and was state-of-the-art and the best around. I could buy that for sure. This is nothing like that, and you can't tell me it's because they have had a design rethink based on fan consultation ? when where you asked? Nope, I wouldn/t want to move out of Liverpool for this Portakabin! Get down to Goodison!

Just seen the stadium pictures, looks okay but not state-of-the-art looking. Thought there would have been a few more images. But this is Everton; got to save the pennies!

Looking at it more closely, it looke like they have just taken the FC Köaut;ln stadium pictures, erased a few thing out and added a few new bits. I know we were told it would be similiar.

I like the stadium design and id love Everton to be playing in it,and they reckon they can get it up and running by 2010 - cant wait!

My vote is a ’yes’

Well, I know I've been on here and said how dull it is going on about the new stadium saga, but having seen the images of it on the official site, if it does look like that upon completion, then I for one will be very happy.

I've made it clear that my opinion is that we need to move, and if its to Kirkby or the moon I'm not fussed but I'm not here to bang on about that.

I'm no architect, but the new stadium photos they are trying to sway us with don't look that much like the Cologne Stadium design. I don't know if there's a bit of artistic license, but the stadium as shown looks square with the corners rounded off. I see the "Peoples Club" hoardings on each corner, as if we need convincing that it's still the case. By the way, is that a trolley park on the last picture?

Looks like a massive kids Subutteo
game to me.Open sided cheap and nasty.Millwalls ground with better lights.Compare that to what
the RS are building and you will be embarrased to say its ours.

It probably looks better as an artists impression than it would be in real life. Why cant they build a stadium that will at least soften the blow of leaving Liverpool City?

A massive home supporters end behind on goal for starters so its loud and hostile.

Ah who gives a fuck I aint going there anyway.
Poxy ground built by a poxy chairman.

Portakabin? Don’t make me laugh. We’re skint, so a ground financed by someone else? Why not? Give me a concrete argument against it also showing where the cash is gonna come from to finance a Kings Dock style arena? We’ve got to be realistic here, we can’t compete with Arsenal, RS Portsmouth on new builds as we don’t have the finances. I for one feel a bit happier that BK and Bully have actually got something that IS feasible and won’t skint us for years to come. If you want a similarity, look at Burnley years ago when they skinted themselves to build the Bob Lord stand and it nearly cost them their league place. Now i’m not saying this will happen at EFC, but closer to home is Leeds. All eggs in one basket and look at them now? they can’t even pay their players wages.
Time to get real and lower your sights. This is the main point that hurts the most. We’re not a top four club in turnover etc. Fuckin deal with it!

Interesting they have continued with the ’People’s club’ label - this of course stems from a Moyes quote when he took up his post and referred to the survey that stated that Everton has more fans living within a catchment area close to the ground than any other club - inferring that most Everton Supporters were from Liverpool - and perhaps suggesting that Liverpool’s attendances where swelled by ’ousiders’ (which we knew to be true anyway). So, in my view the ’People’s Club’ is synonymous with Everton in Liverpool - not Everton in Kirkby.

Compare and contrast especially the bullshit straight from the horse’s arse mouth such a short while ago - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/low/football/teams/e/everton/1454035.stm

So what’s the asbodome the gateway to then Bill and Keith? Filling your pockets and leaving the club stood still with an average retail park stadia in a shithole area that hasn’t attracted development since it was built and can you two pair of shysters guarantee you will fill it with supporters and corporates?

I was leaning towards a yes vote but having seen the design, I am a definite no. I am incredibly disappointed.

I must admit, I thought they would have had something pretty special up their sleeves. A design that could be iconic, beat the KD hands down and justify the less than ideal location. Something that looks like it might last 100 years.

This is mediocre. Refuse to accept mediocrity. NSNO!!

Two foreigners come to Liverpool on holiday, they are in the city centre and ask a local where the football stadiums are. They are told that they can get the bus down to see Liverpools stadium and be there in 20 minutes, or get the bus to the outskirts of Liverpool that will take longer. I wonder which stadium they will choose to visit. My vote is a NO!

Tony is right the first thing I thought of was ’Millwall’ cos thats exactly what it looks like. A flatpack stadium in the middle of nowhere, with £10m worth of lights is not a future for us.
So many people have been waiting for a good look at these plans so why don’t they show it in the daylight? and the fact they produced just two pictures - its a 3D model,so costs nothing to produce a few more angles, and turn the lights on.
Answer is that it looks more exciting at night and they dont want us to see the industrial estates that are gonna surround it.
Im sick of this bullshit one-sided information we are being force-fed, wake up people and JUST SAY NO!

One question Ed Macdonald- How would you propose to fund something akin to the Kings Dock Project? What you actually saying is you want Everton to go into £250 million plus of debt just to build the stadium of your dreams. Most of us live in the real world and realise nothing of that ilk will happen without a major investor willing to spend close on 400 million on buying the club ,clearing the debt and developing a stadium for our club going into much further debt (both Arsenal and Liverpool could not afford their stadiums without major loans). We are not going to get that kind of investment. first and foremost because we do not have the fanbase that would be willing to pay the prices required to fuel the returns such an investor would demand. We do not have the demographics of the Arsenal fanbase either. How many of our fans in all honesty would be prepared to pay over £1000 for a season ticket and 50% to 200% more for their tickets. Someone has to pay for the cost of this major investment or loan repayments as it usually would be for a project on the scale 250m to 300m and it will usually be the fans full stop. So great get this mega stadium, price people out of going, club ends up going bust- neither realistic or likely to happen scenario.

Just bide your time, wait for the RS stadium and you can have a laugh as they are charging ridiculous prices for an average premiership game, stands full of Olaf’s and Helgers, no real local identity whatsover. I know where I’d rather be in a stadium with our own regular fanbase, being charged fair prices- wherever that might be.

You don’t have to accept the proposed stadium of course or where it is, but do think realistically about who pays in the end. Arsenal fans are clearly happy paying their new premium prices as they have 60000 sellouts most weeks at very high prices, but would you be in the same situation. I clearly think thousands of Everton fans would not be in such a position to be paying £94 or even 60 quid to watch a game-do you?Nothing wrong with ambition but realism is also required.

21   Posted 20/07/2007 at 14:39:02

John Murphy, That?s quite possibly the worst argument against not moving that I?ve ever seen!

A couple of foreigners in the city decide, on the off-chance, to go and watch a game at either Everton or Liverpool... Who is the stadium being built for exactly? The supporters or any available passing trade?

Nonsense.
Gavin Ramejkis
22   Posted 20/07/2007 at 14:37:49

Yeah right Norman who is going to fund it? The glossy giants of Man City (bigger debt), Birmingham (yo yo side), Fulham (very poor man’s Chelsea), Southampton (championship side) and Blackburn (can’t fill their current ground) finding investors, where would a club who has predominantly done considerably better than those for the last few years with higher attendances ever get investment? Don’t give me the free stadium fairy tale there is no such thing as a free lunch. If Keith or Bill told me it was raining I’d go outside and take a look myself.

To say Moyes first came up with ’The People’s Club’ is bollocks! The over-used phrase was the creation of one of the hacks who worked in the club’s Press Office at the time and used in briefing the then new manager.I know this is fact because the guy concerned has never got over having it nicked!
Bit like everything to do with our club these days-second hand!

Could you therefore reply with YOUR eloquent argument against moving? i take it you want to stay and redevelope GP? Any ideas how it would be financed? Or should we stay and keep chucking money at GP till it finally embarrasses us and falls down?
I know that we dont really know about our fan base in the future, no-one does to be honest. i hope i’m right about moving but not everyone will be happy. I also know that whatever we vote will count for fuck all, just don’t give me shit over my opnion. After all, thats what it is, MY OPNION

You say that Liverpool FC having a state of the art ground metres away from we have played for over a 100 years whilst we ship out to Kirkby does not matter? History does matter, this City is trading and prospering it, the Albert Dock, Beatles Museums etc etc, all the development in the City is either exciting innovative new build or refurbishment of exisitng grand designs. I suspect Tony Marsh and others like him are angry because they simply care passionately about the long term future of the club and can see through the lies and bullshit that Kenwright and Wyness are pushing.
Ed MacDonald
27   Posted 20/07/2007 at 14:57:50

Steve, it’s fine moving to Kirkby, but not to a cheap looking, badly designed stadium. It doesn’t have to cost more to design something good/innovative. Compare the Scottish and Welsh parliaments.

The issue is we picked duff designers (Barr) who churn out duff stadia. Probably for a saving of a couple of hundred grand.

Fair enough Ed, We’ll wait until EFC say the period of exclusivity (bad spelling?) is over and we’ll see what the council have waiting up their sleeves. Maybe its because i’m not from the area that i can’t see all the regeneration going on so i’ll hold my hands up. We all care! whether you are from the City or not. A move away from home is always contentious, more so perhaps for Everton given the history of the club and its rivals!
If my memory serves me correctly the Norman Chester Centre for football research conducted a project that revealed that 70% of Evertonians lived within a radius of 5 miles of the ground so this compounds the feeling of frustration (could anyone please confirm/refute these figues).
If have you have not visited the city centre recently you should do! it is a vibrant place (despite looking like a construction site) and I firmly believe that Everton are a key part of the City. Like you I worry about the next 5-10 years and am anxious that a move to Kirkby will hurt us more that help us

How can anyone be excited by the images shown on the EFC Site. There is one partial shot of the pitch and some of the stands. Then some images of the Peoples Club entrance and the Trolley Park - how can you make any assessment based on them. From what you can see it looks awful - would we have pride in it? It looks like a Tescoe Store hollowed out to take a pitch!! Bloody hell I feel more miserable than ever about moving.

I don’t know why they couldn’t have designed the new stad based on the current Goodison model, obviously modernised though. For example big main stand with a blue roof, double tiered gwladys etc.. a design recognisable as Goodison but evidently new, modern bigger and better.

Gets his shareholders a superstore in Knowlsey and one in a regenerated Walton both with handouts, two guesses who the shrewder businessman is Billy Bullshitter or Terry Blue Tesco.

Can some people (asbodome etc) try to remember that a lot of fans who travel to Goodison travel from Kirkby. If you don’t like the idea of moving to kirkby then fine, but there is no need to slag the people of Kirkby off.

I do agree that this looks disapointing, but i didn’t expect more, the stadium will be built to Tescos spec, not ours. After all apparenlty we struggled to pay the £400k this year to keep the ground in good nic.

41   Posted 20/07/2007 at 18:10:32

To people like Tony Marsh who say they wont go there if we move, I’ll be glad we just have proper fans instead of people like him. (Nothing personal)

I never realized that people supported a team because of what the stadium was like and where it was.
I started supporting Everton long before I knew where we actually played. The stadium was only a few miles away but to a kid my age it could have been in Kirkby for all I cared. I supported us for Ratcliffe, Steven and Sharp and not for the ground. Give me Arteta, Lescott and Cahill and I don’t care where we are.

Ben, a lot of my family migrated from Liverpool to become Kirby residents and I spent a good deal of my childhood there, even worse for me was my parents went further to the barren hole that is Skelmersdale, you just can’t polish a turd, both are holes which I won’t try to deny.

We apparently struggled to pay the £400k this year for upkeep? Words from whose mouth? Ever decreasing squad and wages and sold everything we have bar the ground itself and still struggling to pay bills? I think the far more important question is where is it all going? A lot of this is spin from people renowned for lies.

Good for you Tony Cunningham but my humble opinion moving out to Kirkby will be the end of us and I dont want any part of it.>You surrender the city to Liverpool FC and join Billy Bullshitter as one of his puppets
Kopites love Everton fans like you.Cannon fodder.Fools who think it wont make a difference were we go but you are so wrong.Once we have left the city thats it for us pal.
When you are stuck in a 5 mile tail back trying to get out of the Mechannodome maybe you will realise that we belong were we are now. If its doesnt bother you where we play then how about if they changed our name as well like they did in rugby league. What then.Wake up dopey you are being sold down the river but you havent got the brains to see it. btw I grew up watching Ball,Kendall, harvey ,Royle,

Blue in the face: Can you answer the question how we are going to fund the Tescodome? Because the sums don’t quite add up do they? Then you can answer how we will all get to Kirkby when it has only 1/10th the public transport provision of Walton..... or then again you can just go and daydream at those glossy images.... how many of the interior was there? You know, the bit we will spend the majority of our matchgoing time having to look at.
