Alan Smith

Just heard Man Utd's Assistant telling Sky Sports News they want Tevez because they are short of strikers. If Smith has agreed to go then they would be short so this could be a good indication.
Having read on this site that Alan Smith has already signed, which I didn't believe was true, I am beginning to believe it.
And what a signing he would be. A proven goal scorer, good passer of the ball, great tackler and skill. He can play in midfield, behind the strikers and up front and is grafter too. Just hope we get him in asap.

I would like to have Smith on board, but initially only on loan for a year, with a view to a permanent deal. I think he is a good ’blood n guts’ player, but he is not the same player he was at Leeds Utd 4 years ago. He has had a bad injury last year, and I would hate to see us run in and lay out 5 mil or whatever he will cost, because we really do not know whether his injury problems are truly behaind him.
On a slightly different note, I am gutted we have all forgotten about Fernandes-what a player we have missed out on there!

I agree with you Danny.I think some of the Quotes have been around £6m+ for him.To me that would be a few million to far.I couldn’t understand us paying that much, when we could have had Nugent for £6m,a young lad with a good few years ahead of him.And Gavin "a proven goalscorer"maybe when he was at leeds. But his his record at utd is woeful.

Yeah I agree his injuries are a bit of a worry but that should knock down his price and he may turn out to be another Gray?!
Brian, to be honest he has played midfield most of his time at utd so I wouldn’t bring that record into it.

Smith for me is an average premiership player and certainly not worth £6m+. Moyes will love him but I think we should be looking for better to be honest although if hes all thats on offer we ll take him. For the record sky sports news has the nugent deal at £4.5m probably with add ons. At that money I d have taken a punt and probably think he offers better value than Mr Average Smith. Where is my Manny Fernandes ? We were told we only brought in players on loan with a view to signing them so presumably a price was in place for the young magician ? Why the hell havent we signed him then ????!!!! Beggers belief

Shaun,I saw that on sky,but thought it was a typing error or something.Thing is,at that price and as you say maybe with add ons, that wouldn’t have been a bad deal.

Blue Shaun, I think the fact that no club at all has gone for Fernandes is because of this 3rd party ownership crap. He is clearly an outstanding tallent yet not one club is known to be interested in him. Seems a bit sus to me.

I certainly dont think Alan Smith has already signed for us so dont get carried away..Remember in about April we heard quotes saying a deal for Nugent was already done and dusted..Its probably just bullshit gossip , deals are not done without the media knowing.. We are going to need another two players at least and one of the MUST be a striker be it Smith or whoever..I agree though that a move for Smith seems most likely.

I would welcome Smith to the club wears his heart on his sleave and has something to prove after his time at united. Better than Nugent who as far as I could see had one thing in his favour in that he supported the club. he was obviously someone very highly thought of as a potential top class striker in that the only teams to bid for him were. Sunderlaqnd who then bought Chopra for 5 mill and Portsmouth.

I agree with most things said here of Alan Smith, but proven goal scorer?? I think 7 is his best premiership tally for a season and hes the type that if your team wins 5-0 he got the fifth when it dont really matter!

Having not made an offer for Nugent I’d be very surprised if Moyes were to throw away good money on Smith. The guy has hardly been a prolific goal scorer with Utd, some rightly make the point he’s been played in midfield I think that speaks volumes. The fact is he has suffered a horrendous injury and from what I’ve seen of him since his return he is struggling to regain his form little wonder Utd are keen to offload him. I do hope Moyes is not tempted as it will make the decision not to pursue Nugent all the more disappointing. Surely Cahill would be a much better option in the absence of Vaughan assuming of course we are able to secure Vogel. I think Moyes will likely make an offer for Taylor at Portsmouth now that’s someone who would truly improve the squad.

I would like to see someone like Taylor too but cant see Portsmouth selling him cos they seem to be building quite well at the moment and selling him would be a pointless step back!

I’ve commented on here before about Al and I have to say I’m not too convinced that he will definitely sign for Everton. From people I know he’s in two minds, deep down he knows he should get out of Man U to kickstart his career but is waiting to see if the Tevez deal goes through or not. If it fails he’ll consider staying and fighting for his place because he was quite settled there. So for me, I think its wait and see - yet again..

you all know alan can fight. he did so when he came back and fought for a place in the first team whose to say he cant do it again. he turned down all loan offers. personally i think he should stay in man u esp it the tevez deal doesnt happen. he always gives it 110% and he spreads the determination throughout the team
