Friendlies

Comments (3)

With an important season not far away, both domestically and in Europe, am I the only one dismayed by our pre-season fixtures.

Whilst I can understand team bonding and getting players fit (although how unfit can you get as a professional footballer in a month ?) I'm at a loss as to who we've arranged to play. The first team jet off to America and lose their one and only official game although they did manage to beat a girls college under 11 team behind closed doors - was that just so Beattie could score ?!?!

Newcastle have played Celtic and Juventus in the last few days, whilst we play Werder Bremen on Tuesday followed by Crystal Palace. Hardly the chance to get some much needed European experience.

With all this talk of moving I would have thought the best thing the board could do is to have the lads playing some top quality opposition, just to give us fans something other to talk about.

Werder Bremen play in the Champions League year in year out, you’re making a fool of yourself.

I’d rather watch a game against Celtic for personal reasons, but I rank Bremen well over Celtic tbh.

Gents, now that you’ve put me in my place - one friendly against European opposition (admittedly of high quality Erik/Michael) cannot be enough, surely we should have been looking to arrange at the very least an away game.

Or was Real Salt Lake an example of things to come on our travels ? (And they’re not in Europe before you start Michael !!)

I guess the Crystal Palace friendly is also part of the Johnson transfer anyway !!!

Well, you’re right about the Palace-friendly as far as I know. But I do admit it looks like we’re playing very few serious friendlies.

It might just be that Moyes reckons it will be a long season fighting on a lot of fronts (fingers crossed!) so he doesn’t wants to tire his depleted squad early on in meaningless friendlies.

Most friendlies are hardly worth the time to watch anyway, no matter the opposition. At least in my opinion. But I’ll make a nice u-turn about that if we are empty-handed after 5 games or so :p.
