Our new shoe box

Just thought I'd share some points from an excellent letter published in yesterday's Observer regarding our new stadium. The writer claims not to be a blue or a red, he made it clear he doesn't like their new stadium at all but felt ours was even worse and that if he was an Evertonian he'd be up in arms.

The key point was around the actual design, not location and it struck me that this is a point that has been lost as we are more consumed with where the ground is located rather than how it functions and looks (natural at this early stage). He clearly hated the design and referred to the game being run by people obsessed with making money, he likened the new stadia designs to the planning catastrophes of the 1960's. Our forefathers left us a legacy of beautiful grounds (like Goodison and Highbury), what sort of mark will oure generation of supporters make?

As an aside, he was pretty scathing about the 'Peoples Club' slogan, called it cringeworthy and I've got to say that I agree, to stick it up in lights on the front of a stadium is plain embarrassing. I will confess that I want to see Goodison renovated, but if we have to move let's build something worthy of our past and our future.

Got to agree on this People's Club nonsense. It's done it's service... and been proven all too often to be just a meaningless soundbyte. (Although the vote is a big step in the other direction, I admit.) But cringeworthy pretty much nails it, IMHO.

That ’The Peoples Club’ sign may not even be there on the actual building, same with all the Everton badges! They may be replaced with things like the stadium name! I agree it is a bit cheesy!

Got to agree with the ’peoples club’slogan. It was great at the time when the words were first uttered. But,it has got to a point now were it is just an embarrassment. If we do end up in Kirkby,I pray the club bin it.

I very much doubt it’ll be there - the slogan I mean. Once Moyes has gone the slogan dies anyway - it belongs to him and was adopted. It would be cringeworthy to say the least - it’s like watching WWF!

As for the stadium design, I can’t for the life of me see what’s wrong with it. It’s a traditional, four-stand structure with now swirling corners, high-ridged stands with an attractive exterior making use of glass and concrete. I think the newspaper article is someone who just dislikes anything new basically.

Did he say what specifically he didn’t like about the plans?

I think the new stadium looks quite good and the theme of it seems to be atmosphere. I’d enjoy our stadium being the one opposition teams hate coming to because of the crowd noise.

Hi Lee

It wasn’t an article, just a letter in which this guy voiced his objection to modern stadium design in general, but specifically picked on the LFC and EFC projects. His objection was based on the fact that ’architecturaly’ these designs were nowhere near the standards set down by Leitch and co. who designed and built stadiums with character and atmosphere, as opposed to a string of ’me too’ designs that are indistinguishable from each other and whose overriding concern is cost of manufacture and build. I guess the point which struck a chord with me was the reference to the concrete jungles of the ’60s and the legacy picked up by the current generation. It might all sound a little idealistic and I’m sure that the debate over whether we move away from our roots will take precedence, but I’ve always been proud of the fact that Goodison was probably the finest stadium in the land when built, first with undersoil heating etc. I would just like to think that if we have to leave Goodison then it is for something better and by that I mean the best of its’ time, just like Goodsion was.

But surely the upcoming vote on the new stadium is the very definition of The People’s Club.

Kenwright and co have agreed to consult the fans if Everton should move to kirby. If the fans vote against it then they have promised that the proposed deal is finished.

They could easily just release a statement telling the fans that Everton are moving to Kirby. Its within their power to force the move but instead they are allowing the fans to decide.

As much as Kenwright and co would love to move they have effectively given the decision to fans. Our vote will ultimately decide.

Sounds very much like The People’s Club to me. I don’t think Liverpool fans got to vote on knocking down Anfield and moving to the Burger King Stadium or whatever the sponsers decide to call it.

Dutch,

Conspiracy theories are much easier and popular for people to follow. It involves no facts and no thought. Remember everyone was saying: They were going to word the question to trick us!!!!!! That didn’t happen. Then it was: That the vote won’t be binding and they will just do whatever they want!!!!!! That didn’t happen. Then it was nobody under the age of 18 is going to be allowed to vote!!!!!!!!!! That didn’t happen. And the always popular, they are trying to send us to Kirkby just to fill their pockets!!!!! So how would the owner of a company make money, by making the company successful. Meaning that if this is what they are doing they are doing it because they believe it will make the Club successful, and in turn make them money. We can argue whether or not it is a good move, I’m personally not very much in favor of it, but so many people just can’t deal in facts.
