Baines/McCarthy

Comments (18)

The postings about Leighton Baines compelled me to do some research and I found pictures of him and Benni McCarthy in the crowd tonight. Of course, they could just have been dropping in on friends Vaughan and Pienaar. But wouldn't Wigan have objected to Baines attending a match at a club they've rejected a bid from for him on a night when they were playing Barnsley?

I hope you’re right Richard.
Baines would be a good buy, especially considering Valente’s performance yesterday.
I’d love to see Benni McCarthy in the royal blue, maybe Beattie might be part of a "player + money" deal. As much as I’d like to see it happen, I definitely won’t get my hopes up.

I think the Baines deal is definitely in the works. McCarthy would have almost certainly been there to have a chat with Pienaar on his first game in Britain if they are indeed mates.

McCarthy and Pienaar are both South-African internationals and both played for Ajax, though not at the same time. Both joined Ajax from the Ajax-satellite club in Cape Town, South Africa. Could very well be they’re friends or at least good acquintances.

I was just passing the main entrance when Piennar and McCarthy plus another bloke who was possibly an agent? (Rumour rumour) got out of a big black Range Rover and walked to the entrance. A few people shouted at Benni ’come and join us mate, we’ll ’av ya’ sort of comments and he smiled and did actually speak to a few of the gathering throng. Piennar looked embarrassed and couldnt wait to get let in the doors! It would be nice to think that Benni was about to sign but bearing in mind they polled up at about half seven, I can’t imagine he’s been chatting with Moyes unless it was after the game! Perhaps they’d just been to pick Piennar up from the airport, after all, he’s supposed to have been in Germany yesterday.
Re the game - yes, we do need someone to stick the damn ball in the net. If that had been a league game I would have been climbing the walls with frustration.

I hate to pour water over this but Benni McCarthy was there with his close friend Steven Pienaar, our new boy..There is nothing in it at all that he will join Everton, for instance if we cant cough up 6 million pound for first division strikers how would we afford a striker who scored 18 league goals last season?. He would cost probably 9 or 10 million pound!! It got us talking but I think we’ve missed the chances to land Benni now( sadly).

...And to think we could have had him for a song two years ago.

Dont think any Everton fans read much into McCarthy being there but the Baines deal looks a possibility especially seen as Wigan actually had a game themselves last night and if he aint signing and I was BK I would have barred him and told him to watch it on setanta, like the fans aint on his back enough already!

Piennar was strolling round the Albert dock at 12;30 yesterday..with a mate( not Benni), so I doubt he actually went to Germany..!

Very excited about the prospect of signing Baines. He’s an outstanding left back and something we have been missing for years!! Again - definitely need a decent striker to support AJ!! If Arteta plays in Europe like he did last night then we are going places!! They couldn’t get near him!!

Great news about Baines if it does come off. The real pity is that we could have bought both players a few years back for the fee we’re supposed to be paying to JJB Sports...

Heres the post from the Wigan fanzine

LATICS ACCEPT NEW EVERTON OFFER FOR BAINES

Wigan Athletic manager Chris Hutchings took his side to Barnsley for a pre season fixture last night, minus Leighton Baines, who was supposedly carrying a niggling injury.

However, it has since been reported that Baines was in the director’s box at Everton watching the Toffee’s pre season clash with Werder Bremen. It is also being reported that Latics have accepted a new, improved bid from Everton, which is close to the £6.000.000 bid that Sunderland had accepted last month.

It does now look as though Baines has played his final game for Latics and whether Everton’s offer is straight cash or a cash plus player deal remains to be seen.

Im glad about Baines coming..He’s a quality player and maybe he can settle down as our best left back since the Andy Hinchcliffe days...Its a pity it hasnt worked out for Nuno, but maybe we just got him four or five years past his best days..Theres no doubt he’s a top footballer but maybe he needs to play in a team that does play total football..Porto and Portugal ect: It doesnt always work out but he will still have a bit to say in the matter yet Im sure.. Beattie looks on his way out..Im just left guessing here though..Are Everton really confident of landing Smith? Have we had talks with him?. Because if we let Beattie go and dont replace him then thats poor business, I know 4 mill for Beattie seems good but its another player less to choose from regardless of how poor he’ been over the last year..We must have a replacement lined up.
