Lego Box

To move Everton out of the city would, in my opinion, be a decision we one day regret. However, I could be wrong and come 2011 all may be forgotten and we place some long overdue silverware in our long overdue stadium.

While this summer has undeniably been frustrating, particularly in the transfer market, I see Everton developing into a team to be proud of, and with the likely addition of Baines we look strong in every position (while obviously short on depth).

Irrespective of location, I believe that Everton should be looking to build a stadium that makes us as proud as the players that frequent it. And for me the Kirkby stadium just doesn't provide that. Its not just the tacky 'The Peoples Club' slogan that's plastered so prolifically ? it resembles some kind of political campaign.

It lacks character, it may as well be called 'Generic Stadium 01'. While I'm not suggesting we build a replica of the Starship Enterprise (a la Stanley Park), surely we are worthy of more than a Lego Stadium?

We are skint, apparently. We have to accept whatever we can get. No looking the gift-horse in the mouth... etc.

Its only a chunk of metal and concrete.

I think they’ve tried hard to replicate the tradition of Goodison... but tried too hard. But these are just composite sketches so nothing to read too much into.

I think the problem is it looks really small and, well... "German-like efficient" rather than stamping our mark on it. A "build-by-numbers" attempt.

The "People’s Club" slogan is simply embarrassing and hopefully will be ditched if its given the go ahead. Apparently they’ve really concentrated on creating an intimidating atmosphere and, to be honest, they’re probably right with the high stands, four corners etc.

In short, you’re right - it’s not perfect. :)

Surely the area showing ’The Peoples Club’ will be allocated to whoever sponsors the stadium?

It was funny to see $tevie MbE coming out as an architecture critic during the week, considering his own monstrosity of a house...I nearly fell off my chair here in work...seriously, though (and I’m speaking as an architect)it strikes me as thought the club were looking to get some images out there before the ’merseyside redskins’ got their’s out...I think there is along way to go before we see a final design so don’t worry so much...exterior finishes are largely to do with budget ( or maybe do)...if you finish something well in concrete/metal or glass it usually involves a lot of money...actually it could even be done down the line...I don’t thing a pompous gesture of some unnecessary curves or odd shapes definately constitutes good design...although I take the point that it looks like a lego-kit stadium, but any proposal on an outline urban framework plan is going to be generic to begin with...

i want to see a pic of the "deal of the century"
at 4 00 on a november afternoon with a full car park and tesco arena plastered onto the side. I like the inside shots but then its a footy pitch with lots of blue seats and large plasma screens advertising one of the best beers on this good earth, whats not to like!
however the naff blue curves on each corner and those dreadfull lolypop lights are horendous and add to a completely un ispirational outside. a lot of work to be done I hope. I would love to see everton open the design up as an architectural compitition, some groundbreaking and inspirational thinking that would again spark my pride and passion for this great club.

an architectural competition is an excellent idea, wes b. although I suspect it’s not compatible with the cheap design and build, ’every little helps’ ethos we’ll inevitably get from the kirkby project.
