Moyes

This will definitely be David Moyes's last season at Everton. What manager would want to work for a Scrooge McDuck (Bill Kenwright)? Five seasons of "nothing left in our transfer kitty".

Suppose, just suppose, Everton buys Baines and Smith the coming days and Vogel somewhere in the near future. I don’t really expect them to come all in, but it could happen, it’s not a ridiculous story.

I don’t know Jason, but last year we spend all right, and this year we always heard money was available, it was only the wait for the right players to be available at the right price.

I’m not saying I’m all too impressed with our signings at the moment (don’t get me wrong, not slagging of Pienaar and Jags just that it is a bit short if it stays at only two new faces), but I can imagine Moyes won’t agree with you on "five years with nothing left in the transfer kitty". You’re wrong about last year at least, and the second we buy Baines you’re dead wrong about this year, I think that takes our overall spending for just the summer to 10 millions, with the only sale being Naysmith for 1 million.

And before others start: I know we got lots of TV-money and sold numerous players during last season (Davies, Kilbane at the transfer deadline etc) and everything, but I’m just explaining why I think Moyes won’t agree.

I believe Everton have the money (or well, the will) to spend some millions on the transfer market, if only to keep us satisfied and because they know very well that the squad is too thin. Just wait to the deadline and see who’s right.

And just where would Moyes go to? back to the Scottish Premier League? Certainly i dont think celtic or rangers would come calling, so at best hearts(!).

Now, the premiership. Again, just which club is a better prospect than managing everton? Outside the top 4 (none of whom would be interested in DM), we are just about as good as it gets. The only clubs actually spending cash like there is no tomorrow are man city, portsmouth and west ham. The only likely vacancies in that little lot is likely to be west ham.

Managers do move on after a long period at a club with little success of money (allardyce, curbishley). But neither have showered themselves in glory with a change so far, and I dont expect they will either.

Besides, whats good for the goose is good for the gander. Moyes has largely been suspect tactically, and motivation of the squad has gone in cyclic circles under his management style. That leaves his transfer signings, and despite the fact we could all pick a couple of gems out, there are also the high-profile failures that have been Kroldrup and Beattie.

I dont want him to leave right at this current time - but I would not care a fig if he did. Everton shall remain.

We were only getting told the other week that it is Mr Moyes who puts the valuation on a player. He says what they are the worth and we offer that price. If other interested parties are willing to pay the asking price, then why do we offer below knowing it will be rejected. It’s embarassing as fan to read and does not make the club look serious.

It may look like we spent alot of money last summer when we bought Johnson and Lescott but I will say again its buttons compared to what clubs like Middlesbrough, Spurs and even Portsmouth are now spending..Last summer was a big spending summer in Everton Football Club terms, it was like nothing we’d seen for years and lets be honest it paid off very well indeed..If the reports I am reading are true then I can expect Baines in at the club before Saturday week, I have no idea where we stand on the Smith and Vogel deals..I think the Vogel thing has died a slow death now..The Alan Smith thing is risky, I hope if we sell Beattie then we really do have a quick replacement in the pipeline..Will the snag not be with Smiths wages?. especially if West Ham and Newcastle speak to him..I would say we are 90% certain to get Baines providing there are no late bids from Man United or Liverpool ( thats my big fear ) with Smith I would say 50% at this moment..For me we do need some proven experience up along AJ because even though I like Big Victor I still dont think he is anywhere near ready to be a regular starter week in week out..McFadden..Wel we all know the frustrations of him , he can go from Pele to Brett Angel ( usually the latter ). The rest of our srikers are all young boys who will need gelling in slowly and softly most probably in the Carling cup. I hope we have a few suprises to pull out yet regarding transfers,Im still worried about the amount of games with such a small squad we have..

Jason, this has been my fear for some time. DM is THE best manager this club has had since the summer of 1987. For those wishing for his departure, ask yourself who else with no money and no squad quality could crack the top 4!!

I remember reading a Kevin Ratcliffe article in 1987 concerning Everton ’kicking their way to the title.’ Our football has never been pretty and yes DM has his flaws but he is a manager on the way up. Ferguson’s Manure were never pretty to watch but over time, against european opposition they evolved.

With all of the progress that has been made after the Harvey, Walker, Kendall x2, and Royal recklessness we still complain.

I believe that it won’t be the money, the stadium or the chairman who false him out. It will be the idiots who boo a man who has done nothing but take us forward with the same spirit and passion of 87.

Why would Moyes want to leave he has he got the cushiest job in the prem. Finish in the top ten and no cup runs and everyone is happy because we nearly got relegated a couple of times in the nineties we should all be grateful

As regards the transfer dillema,i feel that we need a top quality midfielder. We cannot start the season with carsley and neville in the middle of the park, they cant pass and are not comfotable in possesion. We work our socks off to win the ball and then give it back.Baines will be a good addition, smith is no better than beattie.

Everyone seems to be forgetting we’ve bought Tim Howard this summer as well.

3M at least, got to be even if they erased all rooney payments.

Further, the 2nd installment for Joleon Lescott has been paid this summer, thats another 2m. So we’ve actually spent around 8m already..

but I agree we need at least two more faces, and good faces - but if not lets all just get behind the lads again and a manager who I think is doing a fabulous job.

I hope that Moyes doesn’t go but if he did, who would honestly blame him??

When a topic like this comes up, I hope all the anti Moyes NOB ED’S read it.

There is no other manager out there that could do what he has done for us without spending Hardly anything!

Even when he has spent a few quid, he still manages (SOME HOW) to get top dollar for very average players! Bent, Kilbane, Davies, BEATTIE.

I would love to see what he has spent and what he has recouped. It would makes interesting reading.

If anyone on here, has already done a report about that, I would love to see it!

The one thing that Moyes has always said from day 1 is that he can deal with not having a bottomless pit of money to spend, but he will not stand for his best players being sold against his wishes.

To date, for all thier faults, our board has been true to this and dishes out big, long contracts to Moyes’s blue eyes. I suppose we should be grateful for that atleast!

Some people seem to have been in a twenty year coma and think we are still one of the ’Big 5’. Moyes has done a brilliant job for us over the last five years, the squad is young, motivated and talented and we are about to enter Europe for the second time in three years.

The idea that Moyes has a cushy job is a joke - he gets endless shit from idiots on this site who seem to think we should be challenging for the title playing total football - what is this based on? Cos we were quite good for three years in the eighties or that somebody scored 60 goals in a season eighty years?
I dread to think where we would be if BK had got anybody else in back in 2002
I’ve supported Everton for twenty years and Moyes is the best thing that has happened to the club in my time

Same here Andy!

I am 24 and I totally agree with you. He is the best manager I have seen for us!

I just wonder what would have happened in 96 if That fat wanker JOHNSON had give Joe Royle the extra 250k for Tore Andre Flo. If only .....

But, if me nan had a cock she’d be me grandad!

Toffee, you say Moyes did very well on the Bent and Kilbane deals,(very good business in fact)and seem to say he done well on Davies, and if we get £4m for Beattie,Moyes would have done well there. But,how can you say that?Moyes bought these 2 players and sold Davies at a loss, and if Beattie went for £4m,that would be a £2m loss(plus the 40k a weeek we have lost in wages).Surely good business is when, you get the best out of the players and then sell them on,for more than you paid? While I will give credit to Moyes concerning Bent and Kilbane,in the same breathe I would say he fucked up with Davies and Beattie.

Every manager is quilty of that though eh Brian?? Every single manager including Mourinho (Sheva) Fergie (Tiabi, klberson,Djemba djemba) etc etc.

What makes him a good wheeler dealer is that we he realises he has bought a bag of shite, he gets as much back as he can. To be fair, I thought Davies would be a good buy, same goes for Beattie, as did everyone.

They weren’t and me and you both know that they aint worth no where near what we did and are about to get back for them??

Another point that strengthens this is Arteta £2.5m?? He’s worth 15 times that now, same goes for Cahill, Yobo, Lescott.

He makes more master strokes that fuck ups, loads more!!

Kroldrup???

hahahahahahahaha

Brian - All managers will make signings that don’t come off - it is part of football. What Moyes has done well is to identify his mistakes and rectify them by recouping the majority of the outlay as is the case with Davies & Kroldrup and likely with Beattie. The only excpetion is the £4.5m loss on Wright.

Totally agree with you over Arteta,(bargain of the century). If he was playing for one of the top four,he would be being touted as one of the best midfielders in the world(we know he is anyway) and would walk into the spanish team. And I can see where your coming from with Beattie(whatever we get is a bonus!)But,it is still a killer knowing we could lose £2m and all the wages he has been paid, for doing fuck all most of the time. Also shandy Andy,I reckon Moyes should have done a bit more homework on him.At the time, Inter where getting rid off him because he had the same problems with them,as we have had with him.

When we signed AvdM desparation had set in - we were facing a European campaign and are team was largely shite and badly needed an injection of quality and European experience. It was also pretty much deadline day and during a time when we weren’t an attractive proposition - who would want to play with Kilbane & Bent.
I certainly thought AvdM was a bargain at the price and given our predicament at the time a worthwhile gamble. For whatever reason (bad luck, injuries, personnal problems, alcohol) it hasn’t come off. In football sometimes you have to take calculated risks and this is an example of one.
Look at Newcastle who bought Luque at the same time paid £9m and gave him £65k a week - now thats bad transfer dealing

I read in the Telegraph (via BBC website) we have offered him to Wigan.

I’m glad it wasnt Carsley, he is soooooo important to us!

For me, last season was the defining season for us. If Everton had done badly then we would have struggled badly this season. Fortunately, Everton did very well by all accounts and we are in Europe again (yeah I know, 5th would have been better!).

This season is just as important but for other reasons. This season is about consolidating what has already been done, getting a top 6 finish again, ready for the 2008/09 season.

The players Moyes has brought in, and the ones he wants to bring in, are the players to maintain our league position as well as give more experience at the European level.

Do I expect us to win the UEFA cup? No - but I do expect the team to get past the first few rounds!!!

I do not think Everton would be in the position they are now without Moyes. I also think the limited funding has done us the world of good. What it has enabled Moyes to do is bring on board a core of hardworking players who are very able.

Looking at the top 3 teams (Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal) their ethos is centered around hard work. If a player does work hard he’s out - look at Schevchenko.

Given too much money to spend right now the focus goes to players who have the reputation as opposed to the ability (Kroldrup etc). So limiting funds IS harsh and I too would love to see Moyes bring in some big names BUT in the short term it is probably a good thing.

Andy - Totally agree with you!

Newcastle are fucking clueless in the transfer Market!

They just throw money at players and end up with no team spirit, togetherness or work ethic!

The list is endless, Boumsong, Bramble, Luque, Emre, Dyer, Bowyer!

All had massive money and cost massive money and done fuck all!

Give me a squad who would literally give every last ounce of energy for one another over them magpie wankers any day!

You can genuinely tell that our players love playing witth eachother!

and who is resposible for creating that atmosphere??

MOYES!

i used to be moyes’ most fierce critic but lukin bak he is the best thing to happen to everton.
he has transformed the club frm the days of walter smith. in smiths defence he too was shadowed by poor chairmen (luk wat he did for scotland and will do wit Gers).
The problem lies wit the availability of funds. we need investment now as it is simply not enuff today to search for the odd gem. that will only get us so far.
moyes needs financial baking an we cud then push on to challenge for 4th spot.
until then lets bak the manager and the players we have.

Toffee,When are you going to propose to Moyes because you sure
do love the guy.Just glad I am in Cyprus away from all this nonesense. The reality is that if Kenwright decides to move the club to Kirkby then it wont matter who the manager is Everton FC will be dead anyway.

I love the "limited funding" quotes. Do your research fellas. Everton have *consistently* been in the top 8 spenders in the premiership for the last few seasons.

And as for somebody selling BT for 4 million is somehow indicative of Moyes’s dealing...sure. He only lost 2.5 million on purchase price and approx £3 million in wages for a return of close to zero. That isnt good business.

We have no money but that is not Moyes fault. I really did think we where going to have at least 20 million to spend on players this season when really it is more like 10 million.

Moyes have made some brilliant signings. Arteta, Cahill, Lescott, Valente, Neville, Yobo, Howard, Johnson, Jagielka and Pinaar have moved us up to another level. We missed out on one of the most talented players I have seen at goodison in 20 years in Manuel Fernandes. But we must move on and replace him. We have probably the best young striker in england in James Vaughan so not all is bad but we need more players and more quality. If we line up with the same players as last season and the new signings on the bench I think we will be in trouble. Wigan have bought the likes of Koumas and Melchiot and will be on a high for the new season.
Toffee
26   Posted 02/08/2007 at 13:46:49

Connor - I share most of your thoughts there but,

If we dont TWAT Wigan on the opening day, i’ll stick me season ticket on ebay for a fiver!

Koumas is ok, Melchiot WAS a decent player....

Arteta, Osman, Carsley, and Neville, maybe Pienaar will fuckin eat them alive and over run them in the middle and with our defence now, I would be suprised if they got a sniff! Especially if we get Baines!

Famous last words maybe but even with the 8 new players they have got, they are still shite!

Just a quick point that players are depreciating assets in the tax mans eyes.

Therefore if we pay 6m for a player like Beattie and he signs a 3 year contract we get to write 2m off the tax bill every season. So 4m for Beattie is infact tremendous business.
