Missed Opportunities?

Looking back at the league table at the end of last season, it shows us some distance behind the top 2 but not many points away from 3rd or 4th and champions league football. When you also consider that we were ahead at home (and comfortable for long periods) against both Man Utd and Chelsea, beat Liverpool and Arsenal at home and drew 3 of the 4 away games against these teams, this shows to me that we were getting closer to these teams.
So it makes sense that the summer brings an opportunity to try and narrow that gap even further. This isn't rocket science so must have been the first thoughts (hopefully) in both the manager and chairman's minds. Why money remains tight is a mystery to me.
Surely in Kenwright's tenure money received from transfers can't be that different from what's been spent. Aside from the heavy spending in the summer of 2000, every summer under Kenwright has been punctuated by scrooge like transfer dealing, some of which has been very embarrasing - remember the Savage saga?
I'm not sure that if he was given an open chequebook, Moyes would really know how to spend his money, given the amount of emphasis he puts on team spirit. Unless we suddenly have a surge of dealings with 3 quality players arriving, and I hope that still could happen, this could be yet another missed opportunity for the club. Even if those deals do go through, the closeness to the season's start and the time to gel is worrying. We suffered with that in 03-04 and again in 05-06 and had poor seasons.
