The Mail Bag

Jagielka and Baines

Does anyone else find it rather laughable and bizarre that we could have had both of these players for nothing instead of paying £9m for both of their services? What the hell was going on at Everton academies back in the 90's!?

Jags was in our academy I believe but was a very late developer by his own admission - he was nowhere near our squad by age 18 and, unfortunately, thats when players from the Academy are expected to make the jump to at least reserve level or jump ship. And then, when in the reserves, if you aren’t Premiership level by 21-22, you don’t play for Everton. That means, by the very nature of the system, that very few players will emerge through.

Bainesy was a player who simply signed on for the first - or most realistic - side that was in for him at his age. Not all players show obvious talent and some slip through the net - it ultimately depends on a scout being at the right match and getting lucky.

Is there some sort of problem with getting the Baines deal pushed through or what?. I dont think we have actually even bid for him officially yet have we?. There never seems to be any concrete news..Surely though dont tell me we have to sell Beattie for the 4 million to fund the Baines deal..That is simply embarrassing and what about our need for a striker then if Beattie goes..We’ve already lost the goal threat of Vaughan and Cahill and the season has’nt even started yet..I am thinking we are going to be in for a long hard toil this season..

We offered 4 mill and a 2 mill player which was turned down.

Correct me if I’m wrong but that’s a bid isn’t it?

And yes, obviously, we do have to sell Beattie to raise the funds. Expect that once Beattie’s gone, Baines will be in.

Exactly.. The first bid for Baines was player plus cash and that was turned down on Monday night..But where is our supposed BETTER IMPROVED offer?. So far its just silence..Its only rumors so far that we are improving this bid, maybe now Everton will realise they cant let Beattie go either as Smith has gone to Newcastle so that will wreck the bid for Baines

Fed up with our lack of ambition. Bloody sign Baines, Fernandes and a target man end of-anything else would be a disgrace and I for one will be singing for Bills head ! If we are lucky we might get back Zinedene Kilbane and Dotty Simon Davies and really push the boat out

If we get rid of beats and moyes doesn’t replace him this would be the worst summer for transfers I have seen at the club.

It would be a disaster as we simply haven’t got the numbers.

Jags has admitted that being released from the Academy "made" him - so the level of ability a player has now is not neccesarily the level they showed the potential of at 17, 18.

’ What were the Academy doing during the 90’s?’ Is this for real?!!

Rooney, Jeffers, Ball, Dunne ( that’s over £40m that has kept our club afloat for a start ) and others like Unsworth, Kenny Branch, Cadamarteri, O’Connor and Ebbrell all made the First Team. Current players Osman and Hibbert all started with us in the 90’s. We won the FA Youth Cup in 1998 as well!

Some of you people have short memories!!

Baines was with the Liverpool academy. He never played for everton and has never supported everton either. We let lots of youngsters go the year Jagielka left and he has gone on to be a better player.
