The Mail Bag
Lack of vision

18 July 2007 — that was the date that James Vaughan was injured at Preston and the day our manager and board should have made signing a striker an absolute priority.
What has happened in the period since then? A fairly pointless trip to the USA — 1 game & the over-emphasised team bonding exercise for a squad only increased in size at the time by 1 player — endless links with defensive players, including yet another drawn out and embarrassing saga in trying to sign Baines, yet another player apparently keen to sign for us.
I can't say that Smith would have necessarily been the answer, but options are becoming shorter and shorter, and again another player that wanted to sign for us.
Anyone using the excuse of personal terms and transfer fees shares the same lack of ambition as the people that run our club. We're in an over-inflated market, you either play the game or fall behind. We again seem to have chosen the latter option.
I'd be really interested to know what the club's scouting network abroad is like. I don't know if Man City are signing the right players or not — only time will tell — but I at least admire their ability to identify the players they want and then go out and get them with the minimum of fuss and time - which is apparently copying the "Everton way"!
8 days to go until the start of the season, a lot of big talk needs to come to fruition very quickly now, e.g. Wyness - "we'll get the bodies in before the start of the season".
