The Mail Bag

Just Wondering

Why did Everton state on their website that Steven Pienaar had been granted a work permit to play in the UK, but now he's got to go to Germany to get a Visa. Why didn't they just say that on the website from the start, because what happens if he cant get his visa? We are left with, well next to no money and very few midfielders. Another major cock up by Everton. Would anybody please tell me what on earth is happening with Vogel? why didn't we just wait until everything was secure before telling the press and publishing it on the website? Fucking idiots they are.

As I understand it, his visa is waiting for him but he has to pick it up in person - no great shakes, just red tape.

Relax.

Work Permit and visa are two completely different things.

One is issued by Work Permits UK, and they are the ones who look into whether or not the job being filled could not reasonably be filled by someone within the EU. Once they are satisfied that the applicant has skills that could not be obtained within the common market, then they issue a work permit.

Once you have a work permit, you apply for entry clearance (a visa) at the embassy of the country you live in. The visa officer has to decide whether you meet the relevant immigration rule, of which holding a work permit is only one of several criteria.

However, as the other criteria are along the lines of ’the applicant has the ability to maintain himself without recourse to public funds’, and Piennar will be on around 15-20k/week, I don’t think he will have struggled to get a visa!

So the club haven’t misled or cocked up. He got a WP, he know has a visa, and he’ll be playing in place of Timmy on Saturday.
