I agreed with Moyes about the out of control price tags because of people spending money like they have it. Still I feel Everton have missed out on Smith. 6 Mil I think is a fair amount to pay for a 26 year old with real goal scoring skills, something we really need.

Newcastle now have 5 good strikers in Ameobie, Own, Viduka, Smith and Martins. I am sure had we tried hard enough to sign Smith he would have been tempted, more chance of first team footy and europe to go with it.

Feel a bit let down we did try harder on this one when we moan about over priced players.

What do you think? Jamie

Smith wouldn’t come here because we just wouldn’t pay the wages he wants.

He’s now on more at Newcastle than he was at Man Utd, the majority of players go where the money is and unfortunately that is clubs like Newcastle and West Ham because they will stupidly pay over-inflated price tags and over-inflated wages.

Leaving clubs like Everton with a wage structure and very little money (it seems) in hot water.

DM and EFC Heicrachy should realise that they dont set the prices for players and stop moaning- if they cannot afford players just say so and stop giving us the bull. The inflated prices is how the market is nowadays - we just have to accept it or shut it.

Papers in this neck of the woods (North Yorkshire)have Smith signing for £65K per week.It would have been ridiculous for Everton to pay him that as all the others would be banging Moyes’ door down.I doubt if Miky and tim are on much more than £40K.

If we can’t offer enough in wages, how come we managed to tie up Cahill and Arteta into long term contracts? How come Beattie won’t take a big pay cut (meaning he’s on a fair whack) to go to Sheffield?

The running of Everton stinks. All these supposed transfers stink. We’ve no money and are just trying to show "ambition" by bidding for players we have no intention of ever signing because we’re skint. It’s like going to an auction and nodding your head at the lower prices but running out the door as soon as real money is mentioned.

Come September 1st, Moyes will write in the programme "it’s not like we didn’t try"! We’ll nod and say in support "yeah, we shouldn’t be held to ransome like, we’re Everton". BUT it’ll be us with our high morals looking up at Newcastle, West Ham, Man City, Portsmouth and the others.

We need a rich chairman.

Since when has Alan Smith ever been anymore than an average player? He couldnt cut it at United and was purely there for squad reasons - if they are prepared to sell he’s not good enough. Same goes for Richard Wright, Bolo Zenden, Kieran Richardson, Nicky Butt, even Phil Neville to a certain extent. Average/poor players in a good team can be carried - he would have done nothing except drain our resources. Lets get Leighton Baines in!!!

too right Patrick, I for one am glad that we’re staying out of it. Everyone is buying for the sake of it and I say fair play to Moyes.

Our two acquisitions so far are players of excellent quality, for the right price. Baines, if he comes, seems to be good value, but we must remember that there are also a few kids coming through this year.

the new stadium and our transfer policy are intrinsically linked, we are skint, so you have to work with what you’ve got. I think we should all accept that and move on.

The point is though Ptrick Connors, isnt half of our squad average aside from Arteta, Johnson,Lescott and Yobo..Cahill for his goals... Is Jagielka nothing more than an average journeyman who we didnt really really need all that badly?. Unless we get a big money injection we are only going to be buying average players..Thats the bare faced truth of Everton FC 2007..Who do you suggest we do buy?. Rooney back?. Ronaldo maybe? Im sure we could afford him couldnt we?. Get real, average players are the standard we are going to be looking at while this board is in control

Dean "Our two acquisitions so far,are players of excellent quality"Can I ask who they are?Or do you mean Pienaar and Jags.We don’t know what to expect from Pienaar,as he hasn’t cut it for a couple of years now.(Quality player if he can regain his form from his early days, but he has been no-where near that)Jags is a good honest pro,who will do a job for us.But to say he is of excellent quality is just a little bit of an exageration.I’m not knocking them, and I hope they do become quality players, but I think you are being a bit premature in your description.

Ray - How can Jagielka be described as a journeyman? He’s only played for Sheffield United. A lot of our players are indeed average - nobodys saying otherwise - the point is we cant afford to pay average players superstar wages. You should have picked that up from the post + also the fact that Im suggesting we buy Leighton Baines. A good young player that the top clubs are starting to sniff around.

Smith has scsored 45 league goals in his career.. yes read it again 45 goals in approximately ten years. Beatties recored regardless of his performance far outways that. We need players, i agree , but we have swerved one with Smith.
