More than just a game?

Comments (15)

Over the past week or so I must have read every forum, every scrap of news that involved Everton - the stadium, the transfers, anything. The club has created, perhaps willingly, perhaps not, a news vacuum and the laws of physics dictate that a vaccum must inevitably be filled, so filled it is ? by rumour after rumour fuelled by an insatiable thirst for information. I've read the DM threads with disbelief and I think I must surely have reached the point where I have to disconnect the computer and telly and just poll up on Saturday to avoid any further damage to my already fraught nervous system.

My main worry is not MY nerves though, it's our collective attitude to the players, DM and the Board.

The game against Wigan could easily become more than just three points to win or lose. It will set the scene for the forseeable future. If, heaven forbid, we should drop points, how will we react? It's a distinct possibility that we will vent our frustration and let rip like at the Spurs game. For many people, that game was a watershed and I hate to say this but I think that the Wigan game may have already taken on these proportions before a ball has been kicked.

Of course, by Friday we may have signed Baines and Gonzalez (oh how I wish it could have been Manny) and we'll all be happy Blues heading off to the match, the trials and tribulations of the last months all forgotten. Well, temporarily at least. We can but live in hope I suppose but for me the important thing for Saturday is to get behind the team, regardless of what I may think of the Board and their PR skills, it's Everton and the team that means the world to me. The lads will be able to sense the feelings on the terraces and it's vital that we prove that our support is for them, as always.

We have a good team, we are in the Uefa Cup, we have fantastic support and we have to be positive and make Goodison rock on Saturday. The Board? Well, let's see what happens, they've hardly covered themselves in glory so far but I for one, have to get back to basics and show my support for the team. It's as simple as that.

Stand Up If You Love The Blues.

Come on guys, let's just do it and show BK what being a true Blue is all about. Let him be in no doubt where our support and passion lies. I can't think of a more important game in DM's reign, where we, as supporters, will play such a significant role.

What happens before and after the match with banners and shouts etc will reflect the feelings for the stadium and the like but for 90 mins we have to put that to one side and do what we do best.

Come on you Blues.

Mr Glover,
I couldn’t agree more-However the majority of Everton Fans are not mindless idiots who vent frustration without reason, and the way the board has conducted itself over the close season we have every right to direct whatever opinions we may have at the board on Saturday. I sincerely hope that Saturday will end in Victory of course, but if the board had done it’s job properly during the close season we would only be focusing on the team on Saturday. Instead we are divided right down the middle on the stadium issue, we have not had ANY leadership from the owner of the club Bill Kenwright (He has not spoken a word all summer-yet again), Keith Wyness has spun and spun the Kirkby proposals that has alienated a large proportion of fans, and Transfer dealings have become almost as difficult than finding someone to invest in Everton.
I just think that with a little bit of leadership from the top (Not from Davey) we would all be a much more united group of fans. As it stands we are left divided by a host of half truths, if’s, butt’s and maybe’s.

Danny, forgive me for being pedantic but I’m a Mrs not a Mr and in any case, please, no formalities, just call me Lue, we’re all Blues here.

So here we are on the cusp of a new season, a 'lighter than most' squad but a decent, competitive first team and a jaunt around Europe to come.

I'm really looking forward to the new season even, dare I say it, with a sense of optmism. We've signed Jagielka who is very versatile and a good player to have in your squad, also Pienaar who can play anywhere across midfield and has played up front at times too. Once we get Cahill & Vaughan back, the squad doesn't look that bad in truth. I also believe we'll sign at least one more player before the end of the transfer window so the squad won't be as bad as people think.

Last year we didn't play many games in comparison to ther clubs which obviously helped us in the league, but I wouldn't bee too bothered if we dropped out of both domestic cups early, did ok in the Uefa Cup and finished in the top 6 again. If we make the top 10 and do well in the Uefa Cup then I think we'll have had a good year.

David Moyes is a fine young manager regardless of what the doom-mongers on here say, and I believe that Bill Kenwright has the right intentions so whether you like the idea of a Kirkby move or not, you should still get behind the team you love and stop with all the back biting and negativity. If you want us to win games and do well, a positive attitude is the only thing thats going to get us any success.

Allan I don’t really want to have a go at you mate. But I don’t want to go out of the cups early,I want to win them. The same with the EUFA cup,I don’t want to do ok.I want to win it.How can you say "if we make the top 10 and do well in the EUFA cup then I think we’ll have had a good year"We won’t have had a good year.Being in the top 10,so if we finish 9th that could be considered a good season?I’m not really having a dig mate, because I actually don’t think you were meaning to sound that negative.

Well said Lue, I sincerly hope all fans on saturday get your message.

Danny Mullaly, lets wait until the result of the ballot before venting anger at the board.

The most important thing on saturday is to hit the floor running and get the three points. A bit of the noise generated at the Portsmouth game will send a better message to them(the board) than negativity at this stage.

Brian I just think we have to be realistic, we’re not a top 6 club, we over achieved last year. We have a rich history but that word ’rich’ can only be applied to us in that regard.

Its the haves and the have nots, and sadly we fall into the latter category.

Of course I want us to win things, but do you really (seriously) believe that we have enough to win anything this year? Personally I cant see us winning any cups, especially when you look at some of the UEFA cup competition - we might do OK in the league cup for example, but ultimately its going to be one of the top 4 that’ll win the domestic cups and everyone knows it.

What I mean about going out of the cups early, is that it would serve us well in the sense that our small squad would be better equipped to do better in the league if we were out of the cups - better a high league finish than say, a semi final of the cup right? At least we’d have another shot at a European place. I didnt mean to sound negative you’re right, and maybe top 10 is wrong, top 7 is more like it (UEFA spot)

I was not aware of the extent of his injury (how long etc) so was unsure, it is still bad news no matter how old it is.

Oh well will have to look forward to watching cannot defend for toffee (pardon the pun) Valente.

It aint true. He’s going to sign tomorrow after the 2nd part of his medical. He has a dodgy hamstring so some part of the medical he’s bound to fail.

Relax.

Does anyone get the feeling that we will hear the news Baines has failed medical tomorow, when he was meant to complete his move?. What a crushing blow this would be,hope its false gossip

It’s still up on Everton.com that he’s poised to sign, he does have problems so I would suggest he was bound to fail some part of it. He’s on his way, have faith.

Why don’t we just see what tomorrow brings? This negativity and speculation achieves absolutely nothing.
