Gonzales deal scuppered it seems

Comments (20)

Now there's a surprise! Or is it? Just as the Echo are pronouncing how confident we are of landing our star buy:

"But as £5million Baines thrashed out personal terms and underwent a medical, it emerged that Porto had rebuffed a Valencia bid of around £12m for Gonzalez.

Real Madrid have also been linked with him, but Valencia believed they had landed the player after drawing up a lucrative contract approved by the 26-year-old's advisers.

However, Porto refused to sanction the deal and told Gonzalez they would not consider releasing him for less than £15m, nearly twice the club record £8.6m Everton paid Crystal Palace for Andy Johnson.

Porto coach Jesualdo Ferreira said: 'It would be a massive blow to lose Lucho and I intend to make sure it doesn't happen." (Daily Mail)

Whatever the outcome some questions remain:

Is this another Smith/Owen/Kuyt fairy tale? (is it me, or is this just an Everton thing?) If not, do we actually have these kind of funds available?

If we do have NOW, is it mere co-incidence that Robert Earl has just been confirmed as a Director (and is therefore putting his hand in his pocket) and who will we get instead? (Manny maybe ? - although I'm not totally convinced about his commitment, even though his talent is beyond doubt)

So was it a bullshit bid by Valencia too, and Real Madrid as well? Would you all stop with these stupid conspiracies, that you have no facts to back up other than your imaginations ran wild. We put in a bid, as did Valencia, but Porto are not selling. It happens, you don’t always get the player you bid for. And let me remind you that nobody from the club ever said we had no money, it was all speculation on this and other sites that people eventually just accepted as fact. Moyes said he didn’t have the money to just throw at players left and right, he didn’t say he didn’t have any money at all.

Alan, regardless of what Mr Barkes
thinks about conspiracies, we as a club did this many years ago when Alan Shearer was touted by Newcastle, after his stint at Blackburn, we allegedly put in a similar bid, at the 13th hour.
I think trying to appease fans comes to mind.

He was left out of Porto’s recent pre-season friendlies, he’s not denying he wants a move away and as far as i’m concerned the fact so many clubs are touted as "interested" usually indicates the player is available.

Like any footballer in the world, if he wants to come to Everton and the money is right, he’ll come.

Now that Moyes has shown he’s got £11m to blow (there’s been noises from around the club that haven’t been denied which suggest this offer was the real deal), then he HAS to make a few more signings before the season opener.

This happens every year. I cant beileve some of you have actually fallen for it - again! 11 million on an untested (in premiership) player...a player who clearly higher bids will be received for from more local parties, to save our blushes of having it actually accepted.

The EFC spin team are hardly the calibre of Alistar Campbell, but doesnt need to be when they reel people in every time.

The club shows massive ambition by bidding for a world class player probably out of our league and you lot all moan.

I say keep shooting for the stars even if you have little chance of capturing them.

Dutch...You never learn pal...Everton knew they had litle chance of landing Gonzalez..Just as they knew Michael Owen was never going to join Everton two years ago, true we bid for Owen but safe in the knowledge that ’Everton is not what Michael see’s as something he would want to join right now’. Or it was something along those lines the quote from David Moyes..We bid 10 million for Kuyt when we knew Feyenoord wanted 12.. How laughable was that?. I mean come on..As someone pointed out there was the Shearer thing in 96’. We all knew even if we had bid for Shearer we would have been third choice behind Newcastle and man United..How about Ravanelli?. Alan Smith 2004?. We had just finished with the worst ever points total, cue a then club record bid for a player to make fans think the club was going to go haywire in that summers transfer market..How much did we eventually spend?. 2 million pound on Cahill and buttons for Bent..When it comes to publicity stunts Im sorry but Everton are top of the league and this was never going to be any different..We are not to far beind on failed medicals either come to think of it.

Yes, I do think a couple of people on here are starting to look ever-so-slightly paranoid...

He was never going to join us we knew this and so did the club. What next ? "Our valuation of the player was £11m and they want £15m. How convienient. We ve seen it all before and are quite frankly getting bored of it. Truth is if we had that sort of money we d have brought our Manny but we didn t end of.

Question. Can someone explain why bargaining is such a bad thing? Isn’t that just business? Why is it wrong? According to some of you, Everton should just bid high and early and nurse it’s bleeding wrists. Everton drive a hard bargain and like to try before they buy. Fair play. Oh, why won’t the club keep us updated all the time? Let’s buy heaps of foreigners. Let’s buy crocks. Let’s get mugged. Let’s be more like Newcastle or Man City. Best fans in the world? Buffoons!

Now that we’ve got a fantastic first eleven full of young, hungry talented British players, I think (hope) the playing style will follow suit. Compare that to the mixed bag of mercenaries, has-beens, crocks, veterans, ne’re-do-wells and never-will-be’s that made up our first team five years ago. Sure, having some kind of extra attacking midfielder stroke forward would be smashing and perhaps we’re going to regret not signing super Tuncay (Turks out here in Istanbul tell me he’s got a 5 mill buyout clause) or someone similar. Still, there’s always January! Football’s back, spread the joy, IMWT COYB !!!

Its better to be paranoid (and correct) than naive and wrong.

Jeremy, I honestly don’t think it is better to be paranoid - what good is anyone doing second guessing why we’ve put a bid in for a world class player?

If we weren’t bidding for Gonzalez and going for a more realistic target (however realistic things are nowadays... Tevez at West Ham last season??), a run of the mill premiership player that was never going to set the world alight, you lot would be moaning about a lack of ambition.

I think a few people posting here are getting a bit carried away with the Kenwright / Moyes / EFC / bashing.

We’ve bid for a player. It was turned down. These things happen all the time in football without them being labelled as eloborate PR scams.

The club havn’t confirmed this bid yet. But,if they had put a bid in and we have the money, does this now mean we might see a few more big bids going in for quality players?

How can you call people paranoid?!
Jesus, if we offer to swap Neville for Ronaldinho plus a pack of crisps, will we land him? Gonzales has just stirred up a huge amount interest, we’ve alledgedly gone in with a very low bid... but why - and if a player realistically has got the opportunity of Champions League football plus astronomical wages at Real Madrid where’s he likely to go?
If we really had that kind of money, why haven’t we been adding to the squad with Smith and Richardson, rather blowing the lot and what could turn out to be another Baros(I know he was RS... just good in a tournament) - we need numbers, quality obviously but oh fuck it - it’s been said over and over again!!

Sorry to piss on a few people’s chips, but - as with figures bandered around with Fernandes - people are once again confusing sterling figures with euro figures.

As someone who lives in Portugal, the fee is estimated at around 15 million EUROS, not pounds.

Not that there is any concrete confirmation either from Everton, or from this end in Portugal, but the blues’ bid MATCHES that of other interested clubs, such as (allegedly) Valencia, Real Madrid, Juventus and Lyon.

So IF EFC HAVE put in a bid of the figure quoted, it is NOT below the valuation Porto ALLEGEDLY have put on him or that other clubs have ALLEGEDLY bid for him.

All I can tell you from this end that there has been absolutely NO talk of bids or pending transfers of Lucho from Porto to ANY club in any form of the media since the story first broke, other than a half hidden story quoting a Spanish footy website that he had some promisory contract with Real.

Make of that all what you will.

Your right Art,as soon as this rumour came out we had people slagging BK because Madrid had bid 13 mil but that was euros which was about £8.5 so we did out bid theie initial offer.

This link below to the gossipy AS site (in Spanish) says Porto are looking for 25 million euro (17 million quid) and that he is subject to some third party ownership agreement...hence the great big fee...it also says that Valencia are only going to offer 138,000 euros per month or less than half what Everton would probably offer wage wise;
http://www.as.com/articulo/Futbol/Intentan/evitar/Lucho/Gonzalez/fiche/Valencia/dasftb/20070713dasdasftb_6/Tes/
The link quotes the "Record" as being its source and says Valencia will return with an improved bid...

We put in a bid, it hasnt been accepted. Isn’t that the end of it thus far? We’re linked with other players too but people aren’t crowing about them (Ezquerro/Mobaeck etc) The only reason people harp on about ’false bids’ and us all being hoodwinked by the club is because they think they have a divine right to know everything about the clubs dealings.

Football is BIG business and in any business deal nothing is made public unless all parties come to agreement - have none of you any sense of that AT ALL??

You only have to look at the foreign investors in football now, this is being moaned about by blues big time, but with football being such big business this is merely a trend that is reflected through-out British based businesses - an extremely high percentage of companies in this country are now run by foreign investors. Fact. Football is no different.

To everyone saying we have put in a bid lower than someone else, or lower than his valuation so as not to sign the player, just to look like we are trying, to appease the fans, just how many times have we put a bid in lower than the selling clubs valuation and got the player anyway, baines, arteta, jags, (I now jags had a clause but someone else offered 6M). Anyway the sterling/euro’s difference has proved you wrong anyway
