Baines Shenanigans
Comments (18)
While I may just be being cynical does anyone else think this reported hamstring strain of our new left back might be part of a, shall we call it a "Gentleman's Agreement" to keep the young Mr. Baines off the pitch in our first game against Wigan?
After all the pretense of injury following all the furrowed brows of the Tim Howard and Manchester United deals would be a much more acceptable reason wouldn't it?
Either way I'd rather that than him not sign at all, from what I've seen he's a quality player and a fine addition but still more re-inforcements needed for the UEFA cup drive!

At frist when baines missed Wigans mweekend friendly, i thought it was an excuse to cover his impending move....now im thinking they have an agreement in place that he wont play saturday.
Like you lee im past caring now, i just want to see him hold a shirt/scarf above his head.
Why do we take so long? its a week now since he was sat in the directors box. Its a discrace that technically some other club could still come in and snatch him after a week!
pissup...brewery!

I hope not, but it does look that way! I suppose we will find out at the weekend though!
I wonder if we will start seeing more of this now?

Kilbane made his Wigan debut against us, so what?

Dont think Everton would risk pulling another stunt like the Tim Howard one again! The FA would probably send one of their guys to do the fitness test :)

Finally! Great news,we now have real strength in that position now even tho Lescott did a great job there last season,if we have a back four of jags, yobo, lescott and baines then that is also real pace in the defence too!

I doubt it is ’shenanigans’.
Baines has barely played this pre-season. He had an extra 2 weeks holiday due to his U-21 tournament participation, then had a virus and now has a hamstring injury.

He’s signed, it’s been announced on the OS

Glad he’s signed - good quality player.
Do laugh at all this "life long" Everton fan shite though!
He’s only ever said all his family are Everton fans - he himself is a Red as confirmed in his 4-4-2 interview!

I completely agree AG, although I continue to be baffled by this allegiance issue? I’ve read the article in FourFourTwo and by his vagueness in his interview this morning the implication is that he is from the Dark side. However, both Moyes and the official website claim he is a "Lifelong Blue". I don’t want to start another debate over it as this ground has been well trodden.
Regardless of affiliation, Baines is an absolute cracking signing and completes what is now a pretty formidable back four (I just hope Jagielka is the talker, because the only fault I can aim at both Joleon and Yobo is that neither has the presence or voice to marshall a defence).
Additional bonus with regards to Saturday is that whilst we may not get to see our new boy make his home debut, his departure from the Latics leaves them with Kilbane as the only "able" replacement?!? Sodding hell, Piennaar and Arteta should have a bloody field day!!

Not that I havent caused enough trouble on here in the past few days but whats all this about boyhood blue??
Quote from 442
As a boy I supported... Liverpool. As a local lad I used to watch from The Kop when Robbie Fowler was making his name. I started out at Liverpool’s Centre of Excellence and although it was disappointing when nothing came of it, I was lucky that both Wigan and Wolves wanted to sign me.

Baines has never said he was a boyhood blue. To quote him today.." I am a local lad and all my family are evertonians so...." Bit of a play on words but most people will read it wrong!

Nonsense.

These unlikely and completely unproveable conspiracy theories are becoming rather tiresome - that’s at least the second one today, after the nonsense about Moyes yesterday. Stop it, please !

Ian Rush, Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler,Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher to name a few Evertonians who all became idolised on the Kop...At Everton our red fans who became cult heroes..Peter Reid,Dave Watson, Stewart Barlow (haha ok forget that last one). But its just an example of supporting the enemie is not really meaning anything anymore..On to the Baines transfer..It does look a hell of a strong defence that we will have albeit on paper, we have yet to see them all in action..Baines could become a cross between Andy Hinchcliffe and Stuart Pearce..He is a pacy attacking left back and has a belter of a left foot..He could link up a beautiful partnership with Pienaar on that left side..Now we would just love to snap up Gonzalez and must surely move for a striker before the end of the month..Maybe then despite a summer of discontent we can have some hope for the new season..Its amazing what a couple of classy signings would do to fine tune a team

On the lighter side this business being underlined by the Barcodes that Baines is a boyhood red says a lot for them.
He chose us instead of Newcastle
Brings to mind the old joke of the wife saying to her husband I think you think more of Everton than me. and him replying I think more of liverpool than you.
Who cares who he supported as a boy its liverpool families one of my sons went awry and became a red, after my dad!!!!
