The Mail Bag
Fernandes and Yakubu?
Comments (61)
I know I'm just a naive bastard grasping for straws at this point, but if what is on the Daily Mail website were true...
Well, it would confirm my long held suspicion that Everton FC is NOT broke, but MISERLY. They'll drive you crazy by NOT spending but when they decide they really want something, they'll find a way to make it happen. Oh please, let my straw grasping be worth it...

Where is this information based upon? It doesn’t even make sense really...Yakubu cost Boro 7.5mn a few years ago, has hardly broken any scoring records since then (Viduka was more potent than him) and is valued at 10mn. Fernandes was quoted between 8mn and 12mn, depending on who was counting and the currency being used...and now we’re bidding 6mn??? How does that work?
Really, the journalists are no more in the know than the rumour mill posters.
Having said that, my sisters friend’s mother’s son works at Goodison and swears that Riquelme was there today, together with Lucho and Tevez, discussing terms with Moyes and Kenwright.
Apparently, they like the fact that Arteta is at the club and speaks good Spanish.

I don’t tend to believe the Daily Mail in general but in football terms they seem no less reliable than most tabloids. I wouldn’t be amazed if either bid materialised ( I seem to remember us being linked with the Yak before we bought Beattie ), but whether they would actually sign is a matter of conjecture.
It seems worth recalling that at the end of Arteta’s loan deal there was much umming and ahing and talk of other clubs signing him before Moyes finally went back to seal the deal.
We all love this fantasy manager stuff, no matter what we say, but my gut gut feeling says Davey’s got one more trick up his sleeve....

Maybe the rumours suggested yesterday that new finance will be announced later in the week on the basis of a yes vote might indeed be true.
It will make an interesting proposition to many of the swaying voters "Vote yes and you get Manny and Yakubu. Vote no and get Osman and Mcfadden"
Of course it is all likely to be a load of media crap.

If we are going to blow £16 million, we could surely buy him and Manny for that. He was at Goodison last week, is a big mate of Pienaar’s, and wanted to come to us before he went to Blackburn.
Go for it Davey !!!!

Just a thought but we do have a vacant 9 and 10 shirt waiting.

It says:
Porto has rejected Everton?s offer to sign the Argntinian midfielder Lucho Gonzáles and have now obtained 100% control of the player?s contract rights, said a spokesperson for the Portuguese team. The spokesperson said that Porto has paid Global Soccer Agencies 6.6 million euros for the other half of the player?s contract rights, who has also attracted the interest of Real Madrid. The midfielder has been with Porto since the 2005-2006 season an in 60 games has scored 19 goals.
If true, a shrewd move by Porto - ensuring they have 100% control on whether to sell the player or not, with no tricky third party ownership, putting them in a very strong bargaining position.
14 Posted 08/08/2007 at 00:32:22
On the other hand, if Porto own him 100%, then it’ll make it easier for us to get him. They bought 50% for £4 million which means that an £11million deal might be something they’d go for?
Probably not, but I want to be optimistic.

16 Posted 08/08/2007 at 08:25:01
It reads:
FC Porto has retained the medfielder Argentinean Lucho González, refusing the offer from English club Everton, by acquiring for 6.650 million euros the remaining 50 percent of the player’s contract rights.
An official reports that FC Porto informs that it "refused the received offer of Everton for Lucho González" and that the club now owns complete contract rights to the player.
This suggests to me:
* Everton’s bid was genuine
* Porto were spooked enough to buy out the other half of his contract with third party agents to ensure he could not be sold off easily or against their wishes
* It now gives Porto a strong hand in the bargaining game
* It may - or may not! - make things less complicated for a deal to be made
However, the Porto manager has been quoted as saying that he has no desire whatsoever to lose the player.

Call my cynical, but could the two things be linked?
I tend not to believe transfer talk until I see the player holding up a shirt, or signing a contract in that little room with a desk, but I think even less importance can be placed on rumours while the relocation issue is at the fore.

Please explain to me WTF transfer speculation has to do with the Kikby vote?
I’m voting yes regardless of whether we sign Fernandes/Gonzales/Yakubu. I’m guessing that those who are going to vote no have already made their minds up anyway based on the ’city’ argument.
Transfer rumours are just that - rumours. They have nothing to do with the ballot. If you think otherwise, then you really have gone insane over the summer.
25 Posted 08/08/2007 at 12:13:07
I have a friend who supports Portsmouth and he always complained that for every goal Yakubu scored he missed two.
Everton aren’t the sort of side to create many chances so we wouldn’t be able to allow Yakubu to miss many.
Plus Yakubu is quite a lazy player, he has the talent to score 20 goals a season easily but far too often he looks uninterested.
I feel it would be a mistake to spend that much money on Yakubu, I would rather Moyes found a promising young striker for £5-6 million.
26 Posted 08/08/2007 at 12:20:03
The Lucho thing is a dead duck, Porto now own the player and won’t sell. Manny might come back, although its true Benfica say they want to keep him and even he’s now said he’s getting ready for the new season there - mind you, if we make the right bid he could still end up back with us. I certainly hope so.
Yakubu would be a great signing, him & AJ up front would be a massive boost. He scores alot of goals and is just what we need.
27 Posted 08/08/2007 at 12:27:52
to say he is lazy seems a bit dramatic, the guy scores double figures most seasons, something we’ve always lacked in a striker.
28 Posted 08/08/2007 at 12:31:29
25 goals in 71 games for Boro, 16 last season, £10/£11M is a fair price for a proven Premier League player, good buy without doubt.
Big, strong, quick, great finisher, would work well with AJ and either of Vaughan or Anichebe - we’d look like a way better side with him & Manny in the team.

GRAVESEN BEING ’FROZEN OUT’ - AGENT
Celtic midfielder Thomas Gravesen may seek a transfer in January if he has not won a regular starting place, according to his agent.
Gravesen moved to Celtic Park on a £2million deal from Real Madrid a year ago but has found himself increasingly sidelined by manager Gordon Strachan.
The 31-year-old was not even on the bench for the team’s opening Clydesdale Bank Premier League draw with Kilmarnock on Sunday.
The Dane instead travelled to Donegal to play for the reserves in a 3-2 defeat by eircom League side Finn Harps on Monday night.
Agent John Sivebaek claims Gravesen he will consider his options at the turn of the year if the situation does not improve.
"The only reason that Thomas has stayed with Celtic is because of how much he loves the club," Sivebaek told the Scottish Sun. "He thinks the club is fantastic and the fans are fantastic.
"The only thing missing is he’s not playing football. He’s not getting a chance and it’s my personal opinion he is being frozen out.
"He’s frustrated right now but he accepts the situation even if he does find it very strange.
"If come the next transfer window he’s not playing we’d have to consider our options."
I still think it’d be a bad move, he had his time with us. Fowler didn’t actually do anything on the field other than, like you say, lift the crowd. If we need something to lift the crowd then we should get scantily clad woman with pom poms.
35 Posted 08/08/2007 at 13:48:27
I wouldnt mind Yakubu either but to be honest I dont think Middlesbourgh will sell. He is a lazy bastard but is a natural goalscorer aswell as being very strong. Maybe his relationship with Joseph Yobo will have something to do with it.

But I must admit to being mystified by the recent links to Fernandes and Yakubu (of course, they may be just that - rumours).
If we had 16 million to spend, Why would we stay quiet until the new season is upon us ? Surely, Fernandes was an obvious target ?
Why turn down a chance to bid for an up and coming striker (and a sworn Blue) - Nugent and bid much higher for an ageing 10 million rated striker - Yakubu ?
Something does not ring right for me.
Anyway, I would be glad to see Fernandes in - not so sure about Yakubu. In my opinion, Nugent/Smith would have been far better value for money.

Paul... I think Hyppia is a non starter. We have far better cover in Stubbs and Jagielka already.
44 Posted 08/08/2007 at 14:36:24
If Lucho had signed - it would of been incredible...
45 Posted 08/08/2007 at 11:07:50
The prospect has actually got me moist with anticipation!

Erm Yakubu is 24 - only 2 years older than nugent and a proven prem striker, i know he looks about 37 but hes actually not.
although....Amokachi was never 23 was he!
49 Posted 08/08/2007 at 14:36:19
Great buys, both of them.
50 Posted 08/08/2007 at 14:48:45
i would rather have 1 decent player than 2 average players
nugent is unknown but i like proven quality if you can afford it that is.
51 Posted 08/08/2007 at 14:47:54
How about:
Howard (28), Jagielka (24), Yobo (26), Lescott (24), Baines (22), Arteta (25), Cahill (27), Fernandes (21), Pienaar (25), Johnson (26), Yakubu (24).
That’d give us an average age of 24.73. Obviously this would go up with Neville (as is likely) and down with Anichebe or Vaughan. Not bad though, it could be a first XI for a good few years.

Point taken but moyes has got good history with picking up championship players. I guess we wont know whether not going in for nugent was a mistake until we see him in the prem. I do think yak would be a great signing, its just this resemblance to amokachi thats nagging at me.

I think it was Graham Stuart who executed the audacious off-the-bar pass.

58 Posted 08/08/2007 at 15:03:17
It was a great pass though wasnt it?!
Did anyone go? I was only 16. I thought the good times were back!
59 Posted 08/08/2007 at 15:12:14
Notice that we are linked to a German goalkeeper today on a free transfer from FC Koln ?
60 Posted 08/08/2007 at 17:56:08
Can’t help thinking that Yakubu does have a bit of the ’can’t be arsed’ look about him but his scoring record speaks for itself. Fernandes is essential as all our creativity usually comes through Arteta. Snuff him out the game and were fucked
