The One Key Figure, The One Key Fact

Comments (9)

Like most of my generation, and I think of the wise men of ToffeeeWeb correspondence (David Hall, Harry Meeke) I have not had a lot to say about the most important event in Everton's recent life, the great stadium issue.

In the best of all possible worlds, a site as near to the city centre would be ideal. A revamping of Goodison itself would be a fine second choice. I don't feel that Kirkby, Bootle and Huyton are foreign lands, they are to me Liverpool in heart and soul.

But the only fact that matters is the one that states that if Everton go to Kirkby they will receive £50,000,000. That's it! End of argument.

Sorry Rick, I’ve got a lot of respect for you and always enjoy reading your posts - but at best that’s wishful thinking ... at worst it’s complete bollocks.

Isn’t that the figure that The Tesco Club Card points amounts to?

Being close to or in the city centre would be nice but, strictly speaking, perhaps the Bar Codes are unique in the Premiership in having a stadium in a city centre location, so why should we expect to be any more fortunate? Given the transport and infrastucture problems of bringing 50,000 people to one building at the same time perhaps once a fortnight should we be surprised.

It’s anyone’s guess how the consequences of this week’s ballot will pan out and look in retrospect, 10 or 20 years down the line. It may, as some claim will be the case, the source of huge regret; or we may just wonder what we were all so het up about? Doubtless there’s many will have a field day with suggestions errors have been made in the issuing of ballot papers etc.. Hanging chad anyone?

By the way, Kevin, I have not given an opinion, I have presented ,admittedly, as I see it, since the truly objective is rather difficult, the mindset of Bill, Trevor and the incompetent men who run our once great club. To them the Tesco subsidy and the relative cheapness of land in Kirkby is the key fact.

One of the main problems in re-locating near to the city centre (re the loop or other),that has been slightly understated, is the major opposition it would face from Grosvenor and other major big hitters that have invested in Liverpool. An article in the local press recently by the Liverpool chamber of commerce seemed to confirm Keith Wyness’s opinion when asked about the prospects of this site.

Looking at it unemotionally (and we have to if we want the club to move forward), Kirkby is realistically the only chance we will get in the forseeable future.

People voting for the move all state that the move will generate x amount of money as if this is guaranteed it isn’t its only projections and part of that is the presumption that the build will come in on budget as we are liable for a large percentage of what ever the overspend is I admit to not being any sort of expert but which was the last building scheme to come in on budget,so if that’s the case there goes the £10mill for Davy, and infact as we are skint we will end up in a lot more debt

Chris Jones, What makes you think there will be fifty thousand evertonians flocking to Kirkby? They will be lucky to get half that if we move out there.

Rick,I’m flattered by your perception of me as a wise man but I have already posted on a number of threads linked to the Kirkby issue.Sorry if you’ve read this before but I have experience of living in an area which Tesco proposed to re-generate.They planned to incorporate a new school and sports centre but as the whole plan would bring about a substantial change to the nature of the area it was beset by planning issues and was ’called in’ by The Deputy Prime Minister.Five years down the line,we are no further forward.I firmly believe that this will be the fate of the Everton project so have not got too excited about these preliminary plans.I shall study the alternatives such as The Loop before making my mind up.
In brief you could say I’m very sceptical about Tesco Kirkby!

Kevin, I don’t know how many people will go to Kirby, if indeed that’s where we end up.

I was merely referring to one likely reason why you find very few major football stadiums in the heart of English cities.

On the question of how many people might, hypothetically attend matches in Kirkby; well if the team plays to the standards it’s capable I should imagine quite a lot. But, since we rarely fill Goodison these days, sadly I don’t think we’ll get a regular 90% attendance in a 50k seat stadium unless we’re ripping up trees - WHEREVER the stadium is!
