Matt McKay

Remember Matt McKay? He was the 17-year-old player Howard Kendall signed from Chester back in 1998. Amazingly, McKay had only played three games for Chester when Kendall decided he'd seen enough and paid £250k for him. Big things were expected from McKay, "one for the future" declared Howard.
McKay spent four seasons at Everton, but never got close to the first team. He made a few appearances for the reserves but was pretty much an enigma to the fans (you might say Vidarsson is a modern day McKay). Then, at the age of just 21, McKay decided to retire from football, due to injury problems.
If McKay really had been one for the future, he would only be 26 today, in his prime and could be a big part of the Moyes side. Does anyone know why Kendall thought he was such a promising youngster? Why McKay never got close to first team football? Why he retired at such at a young age? Where did it all go wrong? And what is he doing today?

I always think the same with Billy Kenny. What if he had continued like he did that season he would have been class.

It was obviously David Moyes fault that Matt McKay didnt make it Dutch, and dont even get me started on his involvement in 9/11 and the asian tsunami! :)

Tony is too busy to reply, apparently he’s trying to find a way to link Moyes to the Jack The Ripper murders.
As for Matt McKay I remember spending that transfer deadline day waiting for news of a big signing and being disappointed when only McKay arrived.
Howard assured us though that he was one for the future, poor old Howard really did let the drink get the better of him.

I remember that we bought him to help out Chester. They were going into administration and we paid them to pay some debts. They gave us the best of their bunch, thats all!

Matt Mckay was signed by Kendall as a favour to Kevin Ratcliffe who was manager of Chester at the time. Chester didn’t have a pot to piss in, so Howard generously donated £250,000 as a favour to an old pal, to keep Chester afloat. Mckay would never have made the grade at Everton and had he not been forced to retire due to a knee injury he would probably be plying his trade in non-league football for Marine or Burscough!

There have been many players like that over the years really even ones who actually played for the Everton first team and then for one reason or another just totally dissapeared..Remember the rave when Michael Branch burst onto the scene?. The new Fowler and Ian Wright roled onto one..He had one season in 96/97 where he scored goals after that there was one appearnce in a Merseyside at Anfield and then he just floated off the Premiership scene altogether..Jon O Connor another one..95/96 rated really highly as our future right back..Again dissapeared within 12 months..Now we may have simliar scenarios with Vidarsson and also Scot Spencer..Didnt Spencer finsih up Oldhams leading scorer in 2005/06?. He never touched the first team and Ive heard nothing at all of him even in the friendlies..There are so many examples you could use really
