Manny and Yak

Comments (48)

Does anybody out there have any clear idea as to our current position in the Manny and Yak transfers? Are these just smokescreens to convience voters that just received there ballot papers? Or is it just true which would be great. I have a funny feeling its the former.

Of course it's all true, Tom. Surely you knew that? Where have you been all summer? How many players have we been linked with? How many players have arrived? Do the maths! The ballot is sent out and suddenly Everton are awash with money!!!

Putting two and two together and maybe getting 5 here... With Everton being heavily linked with Yakubu, does Boro's move for Mido add fire to this rumour? Hope so. Think he would be a superb signing. After Pompey and Boro he would finally have the chance to play for a big club and find his home.

This is the most positive I have felt for a long time before a new season. It might be short lived but keep the faith! 2-0 tomorrow. COYB!

Apparently got to thrash out a deal with Mannys half owners, but if Everton are serious about getting him then surely this will be quite straightforward?? As for Yakubu, everyone is sayin different things, first there was no bid, then there was a bid then he aint for sale and then hes for sale for 12 mil! Who knows? Wish people would stop with the smokescreen talk tho,why oh why would us BIDDING for a couple of players make the ’no’ voters change their minds? Will somebody explain this to me?

Please no, surely not. We cannot even consider signing Shola Ameobi. Please not let it be true.

Michael its not the clubs fault that the papers and internet sites link us to every player under the sun.

We have made a serious approach from Yakubu.

Moyes has just said during an interview on sky sports that there have been changes, which have given him a late transfer fund. (probably Earl).

He also stated that with regards to Fernandes and Yakubu that he is interested in both.

Enough with the bloody conspiracy theories!! If we sign back Manny,I really could not give a flying toss what their agenda is. In my eyes its no more than a late cash injection, but not too late. I’ve already voted and to be honest I am glad its off my mind now.

I am sure Moyes is very interested in signing bith Yakubu and Fernandes, who wouldnt be?. But the problem being is not such finding the finances ( as we are led to believe thanks to Earles arrival ) but actually persuading Boro to part with Yakubu and Benfica likewise..I am sure that we want these players but I would say our chances of landing one of the two are slim..and landing both our chances are probably invisible

Dan the rumour is on toffeewebs very own rumour mill... but my guess is that Moyes only goes for a player after he sees the rumour, so look out for a cheeky bid in the next few days :P

Lets hope that will never happen, Ameobi is a poor man’s wanchope, and he never really delivered.

I think we are after Fernandes but I dont think the Echo is right yo say he is signing in 24 hours. Have we ever bought a player in the space of 24 hours? I really dont think so.
David Mills
10   Posted 10/08/2007 at 15:59:19

Moyes was asked about that today in a press conference (see http://www.evertonfc.com/news/archive/boss-still-confident.html)

He didn;t sound overly certain that Yakubu or Gonzales have thus far been serious targets. "Those sort of players are names that we would consider" does not sound like offers have been made, which is what is reported.

Interestingly he hinted that there is more money now than before, reference to Earl?

"We are looking and things have changed slightly for us and we hope to do some business before the end of play. The board have been great and trying to come up with money all the time."

I suppose it is plausible that Earl has started to dig deep?

Shola Ameobi is cack. Her career went right down the pan after ’You might need somebody’. Stick with Fernndes and Purple Yaki, Mr Moyes.

12   Posted 10/08/2007 at 16:09:46

Managers are usually a bit coy in press conferences about players who they have gone for because they dont want to be disrespectful to the other club! I think we will get Yakubu if he kicks up a fuss at Boro!

Pathetic. Everyone bitches that we didn’t buy the likes of Koumas and Nugent, then when it looks like we’re trying to buy Fernandes and Yakubu it’s all a conspiracy. Michael, actually Robert Earl joins the board and suddenly we’re awash with money. Try that math, if you can.

It gauls me that the people who run this site seem to be so anti-Everton. Why all the sour grapes all the time? I don’t have a direct line into Goodison Park and I’m guessing that you dont either, but you always seem to know better.

This aplpies to plenty of users of this site as well, not just those mentioned above. I’ve just read, and seen, David Moyes comments regarding transfers and he was very honest about the fact that we didn’t have money to spend ealrier in the summer but funds are available now.

The fact that it coincides with the ballot being sent out has nothing to do with it - its a pretty poor show on your part as supporters of Everton to constantly doubt every move the club makes, and you should proabably step back a while and have a serious think about your views on the club you supposedly love.

Just because they’re considering a move to a place you don’t like, doesn’t give you the right to shout down everything they do with regards to the way the club is run.

I’ll back David Moyes because I trust the man, he has integrity, a balanced view of football and the way a club is run, he’s passionate about Everton and puts in a hell of alot of hard work into running the team.

He’s worked with bugger all money in the grand scheme of things and we’ve finished 4th and 6th in recent seasons, yet people are still unhappy. He’s helped to bring about a period of stability that has been lacking for many years at Everton, and some credit for that has to go the board as well.

If you don’t like the Kirkby move, fine, thats your perogative, but don’t put down everything else just because you don’t agree.

Get behind your team, get behind your manager.

I’ll lay money you’ve all sung his name at matches and will again this season. I find it hypocritical at best.

Goodison Park should be left to memory, just as the rest of our glorious past is. You want success? Then look to the future, not the past.

The agency that ’owns’ Fernandes is apparently the same that had a large interest in Tevez. I think after the whole dragged out affair with Tevez they might want a quick deal with another player for the sake of P.R. If Benfica is happy with any deal then the agency might just be too. Speculation i know but makes sense.
Allan
19   Posted 10/08/2007 at 16:37:03

Shaka - I find it really hard to believe that the board and David Moyes sit around concocting stories about transfers to feed to the press in an attempt to appease the fans. I’m of the opinion that they have much better things to be doing with their time on the eve of a new season, when we’re in dire need of a striker and look like we might be signing Manny again.

Robert Earl is now on the board and has clearly given the club a cash injection for players. End of story.

Allan, i’m sure they have better things to do. It’s all fine making bids. Let them carry on making bids. We’ll wait untill the 31st of Aug and see how many deals have come off. I’ve lost my trust in that board and am sure few others have aswell.

I hope the Manny rumours are true, and am quite confident he will sign for us. As for Yakubu, i think £12m is a bit over-priced for a player who Big Vic may turn out to be better than. Personally, i think we should go for Eidur Gudjohnsen, probably get him for about £7m. He’d be a perfect foil for AJ, has Premiership experience in abundance and can play all across the front line and in midfield. Do it Moyesy!

24   Posted 10/08/2007 at 17:10:35

Not wanting to be negative and suggest the big bids for players at present are ploys for the vote Kirkby committee i think there are logical reasons - In an overinflated market Moyes thought he’d bide his time and see if his main targets were still available now. It’s no surprise that a move for Baines came just after a fear he’d go elsewhere if we didn’t move then. A couple of months delay can make a big difference to the wage bill. Also, we needed to sell Beattie before we could add a further striker. I know Moyes moved quickly last year but i think he needed to before others got wind to secure his targets.
Allan
25   Posted 10/08/2007 at 17:26:46

That was, I believe, all before funds were made available. Robert Earl only joined the board a day or 2 ago from what I can tell so money has only very recently become available.

Fair enough if you like to think otherwise, I just don’t think its helpful to yourself or the club.

TW editors: Cheer up, it could all happen against your predictions and work out for the best! Perfection is rare in the human condition, but the Moyesiah and EFC board are on the cusp of greatness. We fans just need confidence and belief and allow our passions to spur the team onto victory! Yes we’ve been largely poor since the 80’s but forget Pavlov’s dogs, it’s time for the Evertonian beast to rise and conquer! COYB

Hurrah - some positivity at last, just when I’d just about given up on the ToffeeWeb whinge-mill for good!

I think we all agree Fernandes would be a great signing all round, a talented young midfielder who has already proven he can gel with the side and could go straight into the team.

With Fernandes, Arteta, Pienaar, Cahill and Carsley plus support from Faddy, Neville, Osman and Shandy and then a few youngsters to blood we’ve got a genuinely decent midfield with options and strength in depth.

The back four is well and truly sported and I F**king Love Tim Howard in nets.

All we need now is a striker to add some challenge to the AJ/Anichebe/Vaughan trinity, the Yak would be a dream (although I’d still have been happy with Smith/Nugent and wouldn’t even turn my nose up at Mido) and I’m starting to think top 4 again!

Yes Spurs have strengthened but it’ll take at least 3 months for those players to settle in and I still think they’ll lack the mentality to grind out points the way we can (and the way Chelsea and Man U do when winning championships), Arsenal are definitely going to be weaker without Henry and Ljungberg and Beneathus is has too many players again, many of whom are lightweight or unproven (Torres may be a star in Spain but so were Morientes and Forlan and let’s face it neither of them did the business in the Prem)

COYB and bring on Wigan!!!!

Just thinking in a purely speculative manner, but a couple of weeks ago there seemed to be rumours that Moyes was going to quit, and now suddenly he has £20M or so to spend. Coincidence? Or was he making an ultimatum to Kenwright and Wyness? As long as we actually get our men...

Here's hoping we knock a good 3 or 4 past wigan tomorrow!

With Moyes baulking at 6 million for Nugent, an Evertonian who wanted to play for us, I for one would be dismayed if we bid for Yakubu at any price. Fernandes definitely, yes please and 8 million seems ok. If we pay 10 or 12 mill for Yakubu that will be it for me thank you.

The Spanish, Barca-supporting goalie of my 7 aside team has just told me that the Barca website last night announced that striker Santiago Ezquerro Marin was on the verge of signing for Everton. He's stuck behind Henry, Messi etc...
Raid Niteman
31   Posted 10/08/2007 at 18:12:34

12 million is way too high for Yak. He seemed slow to me but he has a powerful shot though. I suggest that we go for Gudjohnsen/Hunterlaar. Both looked better than Yak.
Allan
32   Posted 10/08/2007 at 18:24:12

I’ve been harping on about Santi Ezquerro for a week now; I’ve seen alot of Spanish football and seen plenty of Ezquerro too, he’d be a quality signing. He’d walk into most sides inEurope, just like you say, he’s been stuck behind Ron, Messi and Eto’o.

He’d kick arse up front with AJ and be way cheaper than Yakubu (who I’d also like)

Lad over on WSAG who seems pretty well connected (has come up trumps on more than one occasion) reckoned a couple of days ago that Fernandes is almost sealed and Yakubu is "likely, but not yet done".

I usually tend to ignore most of the rumours but, as I mentioned, the lad has a good record on these things.

Make of it what you will.

I have to say Allan that your comments are a refreshing change so thank you. After many years of gloom, despite cynics criticising the board we’ve a squad (yes, a SMALL squad) of young, talented players willing to sign on the dotted line and commit their best years to EFC. We’ve got one of the most honest and committed managers in the league and give me Kenwright over some dodgy Yank or Russian/far eastern criminal any day. Give Wyness a break too, he’s making a damn good effort to improve the club. We are different. We are Everton. COYB!

I wouldn’t take much notice of the Ameobi runour, its on the sky sports website and was probably posted by a wishful thinking Newcastle fan.

36   Posted 10/08/2007 at 20:10:26

I still maintain that £12 million is far too much for Yakubu who misses more then he scores.

If Everton have that sort of money to spend I would rather they used it to bring in two strikers.

Moyes could get Shola Ameobi and Bobby Zamora and have some change to put towards Fernandes.

And if Moyes doesn’t want those two there are other strikers like Gabriel Agbonlahor, Darius Vassell and Dave Kitson who would all be cheaper then Yakubu.
David Barks
37   Posted 10/08/2007 at 20:22:21

Dutch, what in the hell? Have you started your pre-match drinking a bit too early, Darius Vassell, Zamora, KITSON!!!????? There is a reason why you could get two of those players for the price of Yakubu!!!
Connor Rohrer
38   Posted 10/08/2007 at 20:28:44

Dutch are you being serious? The players you have just named are either players who would not join us (agbonlahor) and players who are just shit.

Why do we need two strikers? Vaughan will be back in about 4 months and Cahill will be back even sooner. We have Anichebe, Johnson and Mcfadden aswell as Osman and Pienaar who’s natural positions are just behind the front man. Yakubu’s record speaks for itself. He is a natural goalscorer and better than anything we have at the moment including Johnson.

If we sign anyone it should be Fernandes. Yakubu would be nice but Manny is the man we need.
Dutch Schaffaer
39   Posted 10/08/2007 at 20:32:56

David Barks I’m not saying those players are better then Yakubu, I’m not even suggesting Moyes signs them, I was just making a point that we could get two or three of them for £12 million.

The Yak can be lazy and he misses chances and we don’t create that many to start with. No way would I pay £12 million for this guy.

If you said to me Everton sign Ameobi, Zamora & Vassell in a triple deal or get just Yakubu, I would rather go for the triple deal.
Dan Mckie
40   Posted 10/08/2007 at 21:24:49

Yeah but he scores his fair share Dutch, and as for being lazy, well Alan Shearer was hardly a box-to-box player but id have had him in the team! Yakubu would give us 15-20 goals no problem!
David Barks
41   Posted 10/08/2007 at 21:32:38

Dutch, you’re scaring me now. Vassell scored 3 goals in the league last season, Ameobi scored 3 in the league last season. Didn’t we just get rid of a guy who had similar numbers named Beattie? Yakubu scored 12 in the league last season, he doubled up those other 2. Zamora had a freak season last year, I don’t believe for one second that he will do anything near what he did last season.
Dutch Schaffaer
42   Posted 10/08/2007 at 22:22:58

Connor Rohrer, why do we need two strikers when Vaughan will be back in 4 months? We need two strikers because Vaughan is so injury prone.

Yes Vaughan will be back in 4 months from this latest injury but with his record he could easily be out again in 5 months.

Vaughan is a great talent but his injury record is appalling. I have no faith in him being free from injury for the second half of the season.
Steve Broon
43   Posted 10/08/2007 at 23:33:20

Dutch. How is he so injury prone. He has had a long term injury then 2 that anyone(who puts themselves about) would get. He is more unlucky AT THE MOMENT. In the future he is going to prove an immense talent. Enjoy your humble pie.
Ray
44   Posted 11/08/2007 at 09:12:21

Its a fair point about being a bit too hesitant in putting all our hopes on Vaughan a bit too prematurely..At the end of the day over the last two and a half years we have barely seen him..He looks as though he is going to be some player..But we cant escape the fact that up to now he has been seriously ’injury prone’..We simply cannot wait 4 months and then the time it will take for Vaughan to start running/jogging in training again..Realistically you are probably looking at Christmas at the earliest before you see him as a full starter again..New year before he is up and running 100%, providing there are no more injury problems for him..We need a striker NOW..its that simple..We have only AJ, Anichebe and CrockFadden, I mean McFadden..That is simply not enough for the games we will face before Xmas especially given the unjury records of AJ and McFadden..If Johnson got injured we would be dead as a striking threat.I dont want to hear people go on about these young lads who have never kicked a first team ball..Vidarsson,Lukas and Scott Spencer will NOT play in the first teanm Premiership matches yet and probably at best they will get a run out in the league cup..We all know they wont play so its not worth ranting about them yet..We need a striker that is proven and we need him NOW..Moyes knows it because he has recently admitted it and with this Earle money now in place I am a whole lot more confident than what I was about getting players.

I tend to be as cynical a sthe next person when it comes to all things Everton. But can I just ask one thing of MIchael Kenrick. At the top of this page he insinuates quite clearly that the Board are lying to us about signing players, in an attempt to blackmail us into voting yes to Kirkby. If Everton do end up signing Yakubu and Manny for 20 million, will Michael admit he was wrong, publically apologise to the Board and then resign as a member of the Toffeeewb team?

Obviously we have had an injection of cash from somewhere, would be nice to know where from. Anyone have any ideas? Is it from the new Director?
