The Mail Bag

Stevie Pienaar

Stevie Pienaar really stood out during his brief stint today. He has raw pace and the ability to beat a defender one on one. He also looked keen to come back and defend when needed and the eye for a good pass (like when he set up the second goal). The only time we did a threatening one-two was when Pienaar and Arteta linked up.

I know its very early days, but I can't wait to see this kid play a full game on the left side, maybe the Spurs game ?

He did look good, was constantly moving and trying to get involved. I think we’re looking at a 5 man midfield against Spurs, so a good chance that he will be that man on the left hand side. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jagielka in the side somewhere on Tuesday either.

Indeed, praise due to Davey Moyes for getting this boy on board. Further praise will be due when he allows the boy more time on the pitch to open up the opposition. Onwards and Upwards!
Some first day nerves, but overall good signs. Another day we may have easily bagged 3 or 4+, e.g. what was Clattenberg thinking for the stone wall pen on Our fave spud?

Ye he looks like he could be a very good addition to our team. Two huge negatives about today though. 1 is that we cant play Neville and Carsley both in midfield, the two of them cant even pass the ball, and 2 is that Hibbert is just shocking, I can honestly say he might even be worse that titus bramble (he can actually head the ball!), Jagielka or Neville at right back is a must.

He’s a very good player.. and this could be another shrew acquisition by Moyes. Widely tipped for great things in his time at Ajax. So what if it didn’t work out for him in Germany... Arteta hardly flourished in Paris, or arguably La Liga.. and now look at him!

In Moyes we trust! ;o)

Good point Simon, his situation is very similar to Arteta when he came here. The guy has class and could prove immense breaking down teams in Europe. We’ll miss him during the African Cup, unless we have Manny that is.

It’s good to see that no-one’s getting a little bit carried away at all? How many minutes did he play again?

Yes Pienaar looks decent but going on todays performance some of the others have a lot of work to do.Hibbert was awfull so was Neville and the football was dreadfull most of the game. 3 points is very welcome but a fluke goal gave us a head start and in the end we had to hang on against thre relegation favourites.Wigan are shite and should easily be swept aside by a team who are supposedly on the up.
Playing Dreary dull football is one thing but playing in Europe and conceding possesion like that is another.Must improve. 6 out of 10 for today.

We’re not getting carried away, just liked what we saw. He played 20 minutes, set up a goal and held the ball up very well. Everyone knows he was very good at Ajax, we’re just excited at the prospect, that’s all.

It could have been worse, we could have done like Spurs and lost to a newly promoted team, despite all their high cost signings and flashy forwards, they couldn’t put the ball in the net. And I wouldn’t call that goal by Osman a fluke, he did well to loop that header over the keeper. Definitely not the best performance, but 3 points is 3 points.

Got to agree Pienaar looked good for second goal interplay with AJ very good, Wigan passed the ball about much better than we did and I’m not sure if Koumas lost the ball at all when in possession, we need to steer away from the hoofball though as again too much of it on display but three points taken and onto the next game, let’s hope Arteta stays fit and uninjured ass he is again our best player by miles.

Pienaar did look class but lay off Hibbert eh, he did have that one patently pathetic pass but otherwise played well for me, he’s a brilliant tackler & man-marker. If we’re going to give Carsley a pass for his faults & recognise his strengths then let’s do the same for Hibbert.

Ozzie’s header was different class, the pace he generated from a slow cross was awesome and from that range to get over Kirkland was superb. Hats off to the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, wouldn’t you agree Tony Marsh??

I don’t know about Hibbert mate. I wouldn’t mind seeing Neville go to right back next game, Jagielka moved into midfield as part of a 4-5-1 with Pienaar starting on the left and Anichebe on the bench. I think we will need Baines at left back as well with Lescott taking over for Stubbs. I think Pienaar, Arteta, and Osman could all link up very well against Spurs. God it’s great to have the season underway again!!!! I slept about a total of 2 hours last night.

Cant wait to see Pienaar to start a game. With him, arteta, cahill and likely fernandez in midfield, we definitely got class!!!

I thought we where good in the first half and poor in the second. Arteta is class. Please can someone get me a clip of that run in the first half. How was Osman’s header flooky? No one way saying that when Andy Gray used to bang those diving headers in. I would defo move Neville to right back. Hibbert doesnt cut it for me and should be dropped and used as backup. Pienaar did look good. He has qualities that we lack and hopefully can get a few matches. We really need someone who can keep the ball in the middle of the park. That is why I think Fernandes is a must. Neville is not a midfielder he can do a job there but that is it.

Yes I agree, Fernandes as MF and Neville at RB is far dsuperior to Neville at MF and Hibbert at RB, but according to this link Fernandes isn’t coming anyway, sadly.

ok performance, pretty terrible in terms of classy football, we need more players who can actually pass the ball.

Fernandes wont be signing, he’s staying at benfica and thats final.

Wigan can keep Koumas, we’ll take the three points. Apparently Nugent had an awful debut for Portsmouth as well.

Good solid win and especially proud that both goal scorers are home-grown players, how many other Premiership sides can boast that?

Well done boys.

Was getting excited about Fernandes returning but hey it’s Everton, no official bid and another season of Panto Bill’s world famous smoke and mirrors tricks, so how many is that in the last week leading up to the vote? He needs to leave

has anyone ever confronted kenwright about all the crap he try’s to always pull with regards to transfers ? Has there never been a fans question time or something ? where he gets put in the hotseet and fans bombard him with questions ?

it used to just be his chumpish face which annoyed me but these days its the whole package.

Did anyone else notice Beattie got a goal for Sheffield Utd today? To be honest I wouldn?t be surprised if he bagged almost 30 goals for them in the Championship. But that?s just it, it?d be 30 goals in the Championship. It just didn?t go for him at Goodison but I hope it goes well for him with Sheffield cos he really did seem to try. Arteta has bagged the Beebs player of the day too. I?m a bit annoyed we conceded a goal but 3 points are 3 points. Hurrah!

Jon Smith I’ve often wondered too about his habitual lies and deceit but unfortunately at the crucial moment when the cat is out of the bag the shithouse goes missing, just the same way he currently has during what has to be the most crucial time in the club’s modern history. Could you imagine any other business owner on the planet not taking centre stage as the driving force behind such an emotive and important decision?

Gav, as a caller to Radio Merseyside suggested last week, I don’t honestly believe either that Luvvie Bill is 100% fully convinced by this move and has chosen to let Bully Beef & Tesco Terry to do the dirty work. Compare and contrast Luvvie Bills prominence now and during the Kings Dock proposals. I agree with you that our Chairman should be centre stage and the fact he’s not tells you all you need to know

I thought Pienaar looked neat and tidy. But,I don’t think we can judge yet how good he is going to be, with only having played 18 mins. Also,is it just me,but doesn’t he look smaller than Osman? We need to sort the central midfield out.(someone who can actually put their foot on the ball)I thought at times we were woeful, and that fucking hoof ball again,we had enough of that last season.Victor must be a nightmare to play against, love the way he puts himself about.Happy with the 3pts overall.

To me Kenwright is the worst type of chairman Its not just the ground move infact with a chairman I trusted it would be easier to change my vote No its his smarmy way if we play well there he is waxing lyrical to the press remember his tears for Rooneys once a blue but when any thing goes wrong he disappears

How come this thread which starts of with a positive about a new signing end up with negative comments about the chairman? What, shall we bring back fucking peter johnstone. As for todays game it took wigan eighty minutes to score a goal and it would have taken them another eighty to score a second.

Technical ability and tactical awareness to play the short 5-10 yard pass and move to receive the next or second pass. Him, Arteta and Fernandes would equal quite a defensive can opener. We’re off to the right start.

For me this was all too reminiscent of our poorer displays last term. Absolutely no threat down the left flank until the introduction of Pienaar. Neville’s only contribution was to get in the way of Carsley. When is Moyes ever going to waken up to the fact that Neville never was and never will be a midfield player, we can’t seem to string two passes together when he’s played in this position and it results in the worst football imaginable and what on earth was Hibbert doing when they scored. Changes definitely needed for the Spurs game but I won’t hold my breath.

Hibbert was playing left back when their goal was scored, I thought he was supposed to be playing right back. Maybe he needs to play in those wellies that Jimmy Cricket used to wear. He would at least then have an idea of where a right back is supposed to live on a football pitch.Get rid!

I’m a dieheart Everton fan since the 90’s and I was extremely trilled when Moyes sign Pienaar. I’m South African and i’ve seen him play since his youth days at Ajax Cape Town. This kid is pure magic on the ball. Things didn’t work out in Germany, cause his heart was in England. Here were talkin about a player that’s been following the English game long before he even started playin amateur football. I didn’t watch the game last night, but I can promise you the best of him is still to come! I just hope to God that the same doesn’t happen to him that happened to our wonderkid Rooney. if Pinaar produces the goods in the next 7 games, tigh him to a long term contract. Rumours in SA is that Wenger has a close eye on how t ing develops with him and to have a good look at the player he always liked. As for Phil, he should be move to right back,to many passex astray when he’s played in the middle of the park.

Pienaar looked okay for the short time he was on. Intelligent link up play with Arteta and AJ for the 2nd goal. Solid hard tackle that rocked Koumas and a lot of pace.

He could be a good signing given the chance. He will need to get to know the players better in a match day environment, training does help but nothing beats real match time.

Regards size I have not checked but would suggest he is the same size as Osman
