Breaking news from here in Portugal? this report from the daily footy paper Bola, timed at 17:08 today, Monday 13 August:
?Benfica has now received an official offer from Everton to acquire the club?s 50% economic rights for Manuel Fernandes. Benfica will now decide whether to accept Everton?s offer, or alternatively try to acquire the other 50 percent of the player?s contract that currently doesn't belong to Benfica. In the official Benfica statement, the spokesperson said that the player's own desires will be ?decisive" in influencing the club?s decision on this matter.?
This adds to an earlier report, mid-afternoon, that said:
?Benfica?s Manuel Fernandes broke off from training with the team this morning in preparation for the game with FC Copenhagan as the midfielder could be heading for the exit to Everton. The player?s absence from the team hotel received no official explanation from the club, but speculation is mounting that he will move to the city of The Beatles where he played last season on loan. It must be remembered that if Manuel Fernandes is used in the game with FC Copenhagan he would be ineligible to represent another team in European competitions this season.?
Keep watching the skies, people?

This looks promising. We would have to buy out his other half, but that’s not a problem. We have to get the 50% from Benfica before we could deal with his other ownership half. Come on Manny, ya know ya want to link up with Arteta for the next few years!!!! Get him in Moyes!!

A very positive thing about this is that we will be adding a quality young player, but one who already know the team and manager. There shouldn’t be any settle in time, since he was just here a couple of months ago. If we agree terms with him he can step right into the squad.

I so want this to happen if for nothing else than to shut up my own niggles that DM will finally be getting the team playing a passing game from the midfield

Posted 13/08/2007 at 19:23:28
That’s a valid and interesting point, David. Of course, a longer pre-season with us would have been beneficial, but the fact of the matter is that he very recently spent five months with us, is familiar with the players and the club set up so his bedding in time will be minimal.
He has had an EXCELLENT pre-season with Benfica, all the more impressive because he was something of a hate figure amongst some Benfica fans who resented his ambition for not (seemingly) sticking with the club who nurtured him from a youngster. Sound familiar...?

In a months time when Cahill comes back, we could be looking at a midfield of Pienaar, Fernandes, Cahill, Arteta. With Osman, Carsley, Jagielka, Van Der Meyde providing back up and rotation, this would have to be seen as one of the top midfields in the league. Come on Moyes!!
Graham Nolan
Posted 13/08/2007 at 19:37:09
This is indeed good news. The fact that he has been withdrawn from the Benfica squad ahead of their Champions League qualifier adds weight to the rumour.
If he played, he could not play in Europe for another team.
A midfield of Fernandes, Cahill, Arteta & Jagielka/Neville looks decent.
the Yakubu move seems to be gathering pace also, and I think he would be a great signing for us.
I won’t count my chickens just yet though!!

Connor, I presume this is on sky sports news channel as I can’t find the article anywhere on the website. Manny isn’t the finished article yet but hey, anyone remmeber Arteta’s first half a season loan spell?... it was much the same as Manny’s (lots of technique but lacked grit & determination). If Manny adds the Davey Moyes aspects of what makes a good footballer then we will have a hell of a player! That is IF he signs...
David Barks
Posted 13/08/2007 at 19:50:08
I’ve got to believe that Arteta is heavily influencing this move. Fernandes will have one great player to look up to in Arteta. Until Cahill gets back, we could have Pienaar, Carsley, Fernandes, and Arteta as our midfield. That would let Manny be creative and leave the toughness in the center of midfield to Carsley.
Connor Rohrer
Posted 13/08/2007 at 19:50:14
Yes they annonced it on Sky sports news Chris. I would say he was the finished article technically and he was agressive and got stuck in but as you say his workrate was not up to scratch. But if anyone is going to improve that it is David Moyes.

The story is really firming up, people. Watching the evening news in Portugal... as I write this, the ticker-tap bulletin is confirming that Benfica and Everton have reached an agreement for EFC to buy out Benfica’s share in the player for 9 million euros. It confirms that Manu has been withdrawn from the CL game with Copenhagen...

For all the doubters and cynics out there, unless BK’s stage management extends to controlling all FOUR Portuguese TV channels, this is not mere spin and smoke and mirrors as some might wish to suggest.
I’ve been flicking from one evening news bulletin to the other for the past hour here in Portugal and all are confirming the story, with footage of Benfica training in preparation for their CL qualifier with FC Copenhagen and the comment that Manu has been withdrawn so as not to jeopardize the potential move to Everton.
Benfica stated earlier today that it basically depended on the wishes of the player. The fact that he MUST have agreed to withdraw from training and not be a part of Tuesday night’s game for Benfica suggests very strongly to me that the boy wants to "come home".

Would be great to see Manu here in the next few days, Yakubu too. add a couple of free transfers and possibly that guy from wednesday and we have something resembling a squad.
There are a lot of possible midfield lineups being quoted but i think DM will always play neville in there somewhere, unless he sticks him at right back?
Not too sure how Adriano would do, he would carry a risk of not fitting into the premiership at first, couple that with the massive 6 figure a week money he would be wanting... great to be discussing him tho!!

Manuel Fernandes is a great player and, although he plays for our biggest rival benfica i would sure LOVE TO HAVE HIM IN FCPORTO, but he’s cutted up for bigger leagues.
Strong, intelligent with huge power kick, and he’s young but mature. I sure hope he leaves benfica. Congrats Everton.

Assuming we manage to buy 50% from Benfica. ’Just’ need to buy the other 50% from MSI:
Under Premier league rules: "England’s top clubs are not allowed to field a player owned by a third party who would have the "ability materially to influence its policies or the performance of its teams".

Richard: I think they key thing is ’having the ability to influence’.
Does anyone agree with em that PROVIDING we have an option with MSI for the other 50% for 6m at say anytime in the next 3 years that it would be good business at 50%?
I mean lok at Lucho and Porto. Porto had a 50% 4m option with MSI, so when we bid 11m in total for him it was a no brainer for them... they took the 4m 50% option from MSI and effectively made 2m back on the deal in the event they sold him.
anyway, who cares, get him signed and at Reading on Saturday. fookin marvelous!

Have not heard anything about it being accepted mate.
Then all four Portuguese TV channels are telling porkies.
The printed and spoken words were:
"Benfica e Everton chegam a um acordo para Manuel Fernandes" which translates as "Benfica and Everton reach an agreement for Manuel Fernandes".
They all quoted the 9 million euor figure for the 50% controlling interest of the player’s rights.
The offer HAS been accepted. Whether the deal reaches completion is another matter, but the signs are pretty good.

Oh boy! This is shaping up to be the perfect tonic for a fustrating summer in the transfer market, so glad to be seeing manny back. Not too keen on yakubu, i think that anichebe is too similar to him and that giving a few years he could be even better than yakubu Also im a little worried that at the moment we have a short supply of strikers, but when we get vaughan back im worried that with a strike force of him, johnson, anichebe, yakubu and jutkiewics that it may hinder the chance of the younger strikers development as three will be on the bench. I honestly belive that given a run in the team when fit, james vaughan will develop in to a top class premiership striker. Sorry about the long essay, its just a concern that i havent heard from anyone else and im just wondering what you guys think on it.

Lee, if we go far in the UEFA Cup then consider that we have 2 stikers spots for about 50 games.
If Johnson plays 40, Yak about 40 then that will leave about 20 starts for Vaughan and Anichebe. Plus sub apps and Johno and Yak may get injured. I’d rather have VAughany on the bench than be worrying about injuries and the new kid playing.
Allan

Fact is, you need 4 top quality strikers to do well in the league and the cups, thats 3 cup competitions remember. We DO need Yakubu and I reckon he’d be a great signing. He’s good mates with Yobo and would be a great player for Anichebe to aspire to. After all, he’s never gonna be anything like AJ but he could be alot like Yakubu.

Hi there.
It’s all true. I’m a Portuguese Evertonian that follow the blues for many years.
Benfica already accepted the bid of EFC for the 50% of Manuel Fernandes. It’s up to the player to decide.
The Benfica fans are furious that after losing Simão (At. Madrid) they are on the verge of losing Manuel Fernandes. Well done Bill.
And as already have been said, Cahill, Arteta, Neville, Manny, Osman, Piennar and Van der Meyde are second to none in PL.

I will be made up if this goes through. After watching last weeks game it was obvious that all the creativity was coming from the flanks and nothing from the middle. Manuel will offer us an outlet from the middle of the park which will compliment the likes of Arteta, Osman and Pienaar on the wings aswell as the likes of Johnson and Vaughan upfront.
People say he isint the finished article but who is at 21. He is technically superiour to most of our team aswell as having a genuine football brain and good upper body strength for a man of his size. The only thing I see in his game that needs a lot of work is his workrate. If he is going to fit in to a David Moyes team he will have to work harder but I am confident after seeing Arteta develop the so called british mentality. Other than that I dont see any faults in his game. Its not like he didnt get stuck in because he did.
What we have got to remember is we had a 50% fit Manuel Fernandes whereas he has completed a full pre-season this year and will be in tip top shape.
Hopefully he wants to come to the club and I couldnt see why he wouldnt. We are going in the right direction and he will be joining such players as Arteta, Vaughan, Johnson, Lescott, Baines, Howard, Pienaar, Anichebe and Jagielka who are all good young players. I also noticed some things that might pull him to Goodison. Nani and Anderson. Fernandes grew up with Nani from what I have heard and he is not far away in Manchester.

The poor lad is only 21 and he may get home sick! Give him a big hug! Come on Manny! Him and a quality striker..and we are in business! And what about Vogel..pay a Million Quid for him and get him in as well.

The story on the front of all football papers in Portugal today is that Manny "abandoned" the team after training yesterday, despite being picked in the starting line up. Seems like there’s a 9M euro buyout clause in his contract, so the decision is down to him. And salaries are so p*ss poor in Portugal that reports say Everton will pay him 1M euros a year, substantially more than he currently gets. That’s about 13k sterling a week.
The only thing that bothers me slightly is the part-ownership thing - will we have to pay another 6M sterling to fully own him ?
John Fowler

Great news if this comes off, how much was it glaringly obvious on Saturday that we needed this guy in the centre of our midfield. This will bring back a bit of faith in the board for me, think the lad is pure quality and I don’t think the price is too bad either in the current market when you think very average players like Reo-Coker was £8.5m.

I will go berserk if Manny come - I think on what we saw last season he will be a real asset.

They might have agreed the fee with benfica. they still have to agree a fee with 3rd party. Man city should stop interfering with Everton’s buisness

I read on a Portuguese paper that Ian Ross told that in 24 hours the deal must be finish. Fernandes could still fly today to Liverpool.

According to my son who lives in Lisbon, local websites indicate that Fernandes is definitely on his way to Goodison. Benfica have withdrawn him from the squad to paly in a friendly against Copenhagen. Let's hope the news is accurate.

According to Ian Ross, the deal is more or less done??
He is signing a 5 year deal and only a strange turn of events would cancel the transfer.
The player wants to come and he is expected to sign in the next 24 hours. He will earn a 750k more a year, than he does now!
GET IT DONE AND PUT HIM ON PARR WITH AJ, CAHILL, ARTETA etc! ie £50k a week!
Before City offer him loads!

I sooooooooooooo hope we get Manny. Plus Mido to Boro sounds promising.
Found a good stat - only Henry scored more premiership goals than Yakubu over the past 4 seasons.

According to SIC, a Portuguese TV, the deal is done. I just heard a few minutes ago. The deal with Benfica as well with Fernandes is done. He is expected to sign tomorrow. The only thing that can broke the deal is if EFC can’t show the money to Benfica.
The president of benfica also spoke confirming the deal.
Great News.
Now i’m going to taste Everton FC on TV against Spurs. I hope we can win again.

He was NOT in Benfica’s squad today and we just beat Spurs 3-1 in London!!!!!!!!!! Fucking brilliant this!!!! We’re top of the league, and about to get better. Fucking hell, how good are we going to be with Fernandes and getting Baines, Cahill, and Vaughan all fit??!!!! I know it’s only two games in but we look good people, very good!!!!

Just got in from having dinner out with friends (Benfica supporters amongst them), watching the Eagles struggle past FC Copenhagen 2-1.
Knowing I’m a Blue, LOTS of conversation about Manu... right now amongst certain section of Benfica fans he is on a par with Rooney for the way he ’abandoned’ the club on the eve of tonight’s game.
As Vasco says above, the deal (in the eyes of the Portuguese media) is done. Even Ian Ross’ comments have been reported here in Portugal...
And I get in and discover we have twatted Tottenham 3-1 and are comfortably, comfortably top of the league.
Ain’t life grand...?

I hope Manuel Fernandes breaks both his knees.
He has no caracther leaving his team-mates on the eve of such an important match!
I only regret that Everton is not on the champions league, I would love to see the reception he would get playing in estadio da luz.
All the worst to you Manuel,
good luck for the season Everton!
