Why do we have a world class midfielder warming our bench?
Comments (38)
The team is really doing well. Last night?s game was one for the record books, but I still feel we could have done much better. Some players showed real class and I feel we should have kept on attacking the Tottemham defense. Our defense looks good and I would like to raise attention that we?ve got a world-class midfielder in Steven Pienaar sitting warming the bench. Sure Moyes should have given the guy a run?
I was extremely disappointed that he wasn?t given a chance to penetrate the Tottenham defense. The best way of defense is always to keep attacking, taking the game to the opposition. Pienaar has played in bigger games, bigger stadiums, better opponents and he knows what pressure is all about. The result was good last night, but could have been better! Why is our best midfielder kept on the bench to watch the game?

By the way, I vaguely recall you saying something along the lines of "eating your hat if we ever finish with a plus goal difference under Moyes, we did last season, bet you still were’nt happy though were you.
I think its best if you lock yourself away in a room watching games from the eighties, but only ones where we won by 4 goals or more, maybe then you’ll be happy? In the meantime we Everton fans that live in the harsh realities of the now will sit back and enjoy our start to the season

I would loved to have seen Pienaar involved and Jagelkia brought in a bit sooner, but at 3-1 up at half time I was very happy with our overal performance.
I do accept that Moyes could have brought Pienaar on, Osman could easilly have been withdrawn to let Stevo have a run but lets not be to critical.
As I said I can see your point but I hate all this nit picking after a very good away win.

Right, let’s nail a few myths here and now:
(i) Steven Pienaar "class midfielder"; he’s a guy who flopped in Germany (which isn’t the best league by any stretch of the imagination) and looked promising in Holland. Let’s not kid ourselves; if he was world class he wouldn’t be here on a season long loan, would he. He’s a player with a lot to prove and keeping his powder dry on the bench might just be a good way to motivate him!
(ii) Moyes’ negative tactics away from home; no one, but no one, attacks relentlessly away from home. You hit teams on the counter. That’s what all perceived football wisdom says. If you score 3 times against the opposition, and only concede 1 in response, then you can pretty much take it that it’s a job well done. Only a total mupper would have said to the players at half time last night "Right lads, good first 45, now we’re really going for the jugular. We’re changing to 4-3-3, play a high line up the pitch and really push on. Take no prisoners". And the reason for that is we would have ended up losing 4-3. Or worse.
Michael, I know you’re only waiting for the day that Moyes leaves, but for christ’s sake man, either give credit where it’s due or shut the hell up. You don’t do yourself, or any fan, any favours with this kind of ridiculous comment.
And finally, "Osman could easily have been withdrawn". By all accounts he was outstanding last night. But hey, why not withdraw, shatter his confidence (which was painfully low last season) just so you can make a pointless and unnecessary substitution that may even unbalance the team!
I’ve really, really heard it all now. And no, I’m not someone prediciting we’re going to finish 4th (yes Michael, I know this isn’t good enough for you in any event) this season, just someone who thinks that if you can’t say something intelligent you really shouldn’t say anything at all.
Harsh, I know, but I think it needs to be said.

"we could have done much better...."
This kind of nonsense shows a basic lack of understanding of modern football. What would you like to see us do ? Go all out for another couple of goals and risk giving Spurs a lifeline by leaving spaces at the back ?
We won 3-1 away to a team that many predicted would the main threat to the top four. A team that have spent a fortune again this summer. And still, you’re not happy !
Words almost fail me.

We have just twatted Spurs at the lane and people are moaning about moyes’s decisions!
Fuck me, when will it end? If we keep winning like this and we never see pienaar again, who’d argue?? NO ONE! be happy !!
Im sure he’ll get his chance when he’s needed and then its upto him to stay in the team, but last night he was not!
IN MOYES WE TRUST!

JEEEEEEEEEESUS!
OUR FUCKIN BEST MIDFIELDER WAS OUT THERE SON! TERRORISING SPURS!!
I like Pienaar, he is a good player and im sure he’ll prove a great signing but nor he, or anyone in my eyes is fit to lace Mikel’s boots!!!!
FOLLOW ..... FOLLOOOW... FOLLOOOOOW!!!

At 3-1 Everton were pretty comfitable so why change it? It was too risky to make an attacking substitution and look for a 4th goal. Had Pienaar come on and Spurs scored a second it would have made for a very uncomfitable final few minutes.
Moyes was sensible, send on Jagielka and preserve the 3-1 lead for a very fine victory.

I was overjoyed!! BUt to be crowing about being top of the league? We’re only two games in to the season FFS...15 years ago, the league table didn’t even get displayed on MotD until the season was at least 5 games old...this season the barcodes were waxing lyrical after being top on Saturday and fellow Evertonians are over the moon after yesterday. Two games!!! (and we’ve played 1 more than most others as well!)
Reality check needed...we’ve played well and got a result against our perceived main rival for 5th spot, won 2 on the trot and now have a good base to go on a run, that is all....we’ve still got all the same problems that we had in pre-season, i.e. the supporters split over a move away from Goodison and only three additions to the playing squad despite more players leaving and more matches expected this year.
Where the playing staff are concerned, Fernandes has still NOT been signed so can we forget about including him in our FM line-ups until that changes?
Pienaar on the other hand is in no way the world beater that some would have you believe. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a handy little player, I watched him often at Ajax and he was nifty in the same manner as Ozzie but with the same caveats despite his best efforts to throw his weight around. I didn’t watch him at Dortmund so it’ll be interesting to see how he copes with the English game. I would have pitched him in for the last 20 at the most...despite us being 3-1 up I would say it was more important that Spurs didn’t grab a 2nd goal than us going all out for the 4th. In the end, that 4th could well have happened had Robinson not been Spurs’ best man.

Really? Could we? 3-1 up at half time, we are obviously going to play a bit more defensively in 2nd half. God help the comments page when we lose but will people accept your valid comments then?

Others have correctly pointed out that Pienaar was very poor in Germany last year as indeed was Arteta in Spain for the year before he came to Goodison.
I think Pienaar might well be worth a punt on the undoubted strength of his earlier performances.
Michael Kenrick’s response to Tuesday was just astounding. That guy once called me an idiot....yeah
really.......thanks mate I now can see that was a compliment.
We beat Spurs in London for the second year in a row and we did thump them .
I don’t know if you heard Jol’s interview after the game when he thanked his keeper for saving his lads from a real hiding.
Top of the Premier after a performance lauded by just about everybody but still this bleating weasel isn’t happy.
Minority of one , mate.....have a long hard look at yourself.
We’ve a long road to travel but at least it’s a start !
More please Blues and please , please , please can we at least keep the gloom and doom for our first defeat, Michael.
As Jegzy Dodd says on his new single ’Only Football Can Truly Break your Heart’.
Not this week folks , when any decent Blue would surely be so thrilled that we can even overlook the fact that John Ruddy is the only fit keeper at the club if anything happens to Tim.

Kendrick, you really are a moaning ungreatful qunt.
Anyone with half a brain could see he didnt want to have a bad impact witha sub. Ossie was man of the match, Nev and Cars were outstanding and Jags for Victor to see it out was far more astute.
Unreal, totally fooking unreal. You don’t have a clue do you ?

19 Posted 16/08/2007 at 01:54:39
we’ve gone from being a team which shipped goals and couldnt score (smith), to being hard to beat and well organised, then to still be hard to beat but playing more expansively and attacking?
we had +16 GDiff last season... best outside top 4 on about 1/4 of the budget of the top 4.
So if MOyes keeps progressing, maybe you will be seeing us spanking teams in 2-3 years.
Moyes is doing a teriffic job. We wont win every game this season thats for sure, but we are on a very good path and improving all the time.
Moyes is brilliant..he makes the odd rare mistake, but who doesn’t. I for one wouldnt swap him for anyone - and i wouldnt have done ater Spurs at home either actually.

Ourteta is pure class and in a different league. How dare you say Pienaar is our best midfielder when we have the great Mikel in our team? Disgraceful!
However, I do hope Pienaar turns out to be a class act and hopefully one day we can all say he is our best player.

23 Posted 16/08/2007 at 09:28:55
There’s a team that play not a million miles away from Goodison who you’d be more suited to supporting...don’t let the door hit you on the way out!!
24 Posted 16/08/2007 at 09:30:25
PS: The game was on Sky.
25 Posted 16/08/2007 at 11:00:52
Also let’s not forget that the same David Moyes who left Pienaar on the bench is the David Moyes who brought him to Everton in the first place.
26 Posted 16/08/2007 at 10:31:00
Amzingly Michael Kenrick is an anagram for acme irk heck nil, which translates to...
acme [spots] ’One ugly fucker’
irk [Girly noise] ’irrrk... you so ugly I shit my knickers’
heck [Oh fucking shite] ’I’m a complete nipple’
nil [Nil Satis Nisi Optimum] ’nothing but the best is good enough’
Stangely enough he has the Everton moto in there with ’nil’! I thought it would be ’alone’ as in you are alone in your views, and maybe even ’You’ll never walk alone’! I suggest you go visit depol.

33 Posted 16/08/2007 at 14:03:33
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, I for one saw no reason to change any of our midfield.
Look on the bright side... Were top of the table! So smile!
34 Posted 16/08/2007 at 11:19:57
To read further down that you were disappointed that we hadnt handed out a spanking to Spurs, did you actually watch the game? Everton could have had at least another 3 goals in the second half and apart from a couple of spells absolutely dominated Spurs.
I think Mike, you are taking a very Tony Marsh view these days and think it's about time you woke up and realised which direction we are heading in. According to some fans this is a definitive season for Moyes, he has to show what he is made of apparently (disagree but I'll go along with it) so up to now, he has brought in arguably one of the country's best left backs, a place we needed to cover, a very good midfielder, apparently according to the poster (Harry Catterick) a world class midfielder, add to that the fact we are on the verge of signing Fernandes, a player we ALL want back together with maybe a forward I dont think he is doing too badly? Also played two won two? So any chance of just getting of his back and supporting the team?
35 Posted 16/08/2007 at 14:40:48
I don?t think being 3-1 up is an excuse for using the ball badly. We lose possession constantly which inevitably invites the opposition back on us, and which we will be punished for eventually. If you study the game and look for that characteristic, as I do, rather than just looking at the scoreline and the league table (after just two games), you might understand why I see thngs differently. Or you might continue to hurl mindless abuse.
36 Posted 16/08/2007 at 15:24:58
Absolute , self-serving tripe that fails completely to address the problem of your patronising attitude to your fellow Blues.
And DON’T EVEN BEGIN TO TALK TO ME ABOUT MINDLESS ABUSE !
ISN’T THAT YOUR ONLY SPECIALTY ?
I notice that you fail to even mention the fact that we had a centre back in Yobo playing with a significant injury from the first few minutes and surely that alone required quite a change in the team’s strategy notwithstanding the fact that two different defenders scored for Everton at the Lane.
Just relax..........try to smile a bit more......and enjoy the good times.
And please , please Michael don’t moan too much if we sign Fernandes and /or Yakubu before the window closes.
Take it on the chin like a man !
Can you do that ?
Really ?
Good luck with all that , mate..........I don’t want to fall out with you.....why ?......because you are a Blue......or at least you say you are and that has to be good enough for me.
Peace Brother Michael.....just keep taking the tablets.
One day you might just see the light at the end of the tunnel.
One thing you certainly got right in your reply was to highlight the fact that ’I CAN SEE SOME OF YOU STRUGGLE WITH A NUMBER OF ASPECTS OF FOOTBALL’.
BLOODY RIGHT ABOUT THAT MICHAEL , PUT YOURSELF AT THE TOP OF THAT LIST !
37 Posted 16/08/2007 at 16:23:45
you are a disgrace, you are not fit to support our great club.I’ve seen people mention it in the posts above and I too would like an answer, Just what exactly is the agenda of this website.I know you want Moyes out which begs the question why. Is it your goal to run Everton into the ground, slagging off anything and everything the club does. When was the last time you attended a match at Goodison, do you know anything about footall. You come across as a bitter and twisted prick, in fact some of your rantings would not look out of place on a redshite website. If we do choose to go to Kirkby, (and thats us the supporters who have the choice, unlike every other club who have moved grounds without fans consultation)I welcome the day when wankers like yourself and Marsh stop going the match (if indeed you have actually been the match in the last 5 years or so).
38 Posted 16/08/2007 at 18:34:57
Congratulations, you eclipse even the lovables in the delusion stakes.

Personally, I missed the first half due to Setanta broadcast problems, so watched only the second half in expectation of a really memorable thumping for Spurs. How silly of me. What was I thinking?
Among all the plaudits for Moyes and what was achieved last night, I had the same feeling as you: I still feel we could have done much better. But we did enough to stop them scoring. Job One. No need for Pienaar's silky skills. I guess we have to get used to it, like our vocal low-expectation fans who value expediency over the thrill of seeing us hand out a real hammering now and agian (just once would make me infinitekly happier!).
