The In's and Out's

I would like to start a debate about the general presumption that brining in loads of new faces to a team will work immediately. Why do people assume that throwing money at a situation (by this I mean buying 7 or 8 players) will suddenly make a team the best in the world?

When I was at school and a new player was brought to our team, they would have to start by standing on the sideline. Then if the team was winning they never got a chance, which was only fair to the current squad of lads and an easy decision for the manager to make ? don?t fix something that ain?t broken and all that. The new player would get to know the lads and impress the manager enough in training to persuade him to give him a couple of appearances as a sub, say. If after this initial period the player had settled in, tried hard and played well enough would they be given a start. The decisions would be harder for the manger if 6 new players where signing on for the new season as the manager would not know their style of play or how they would fit in to the team / system. The transformation in the second instance would obviously take longer as there are more lads in the equation. Now I know this is a primitive example, but take a look at Spurs; they finished 5th last year, which you could say was a good season. So basically the players that they had did OK. Why therefore does Jol think that by releasing a load and bringing a load in that they will do better? (£16m for Bent is ridiculous I know?!!!!) Surely the transformation needs to be smooth; yeah get rid of fringe players that never contributed last year but keep the nucleus of the team that you had. Put the newer players on the bench and make them WANT to win their place; make them hungry for it; make them earn the right for a place in your team and at the same time reward the hard work the players from the previous year by keeping that team intact ? at first. If a player can swan in and out of a team, how does that look to the long-term squad members and the players that try and work for the club? There are injuries and players wanting to leave that you can?t account for of course, but you get my point.

What I am trying to say is that admittedly Moyes dithers sometimes, but all he wants are players that want to play for Everton and put the effort in to win games for our club. He won?t be robbed or pushed in to buying players he doesn?t want or need. This I think shows that he is a strong character.

Yes, we do need players but we are now bidding and hopefully Moyes will get his men. Have some patience and make your mind up after a few months eh? I think he knows what he is doin??

Totally agree Andy, and the same will probably happen with Baines as with Jags,he may have to sit and watch for a while because at the moment, how could you drop Alan Stubbs to make way for someone? How can you drop Nev or Cars? Good tactics from Moyes and when the new faces do get it they will be hungrier to stay there!

Tend to agree with you both but at the same time, the game these days is very much a good quality squad game. We have loads of games to play this season. Dont make wholesale changes, of course not, but in a few games time get Baines in at LB, push Lescott to CB and give Stubbs a rest. It wont be dropping the player, rather giving him a weeks break. Only do this with 1 maybe 2 maximum different players every few weeks or so. With teh quality we are starting have in the squad and teh number of games coming up, we can afford to do that.

Worked well enough for Joleon last year. I think it’s called easing them in...

To sum up then, you need to strike a balance... BRILLIANT!

I completely agree. Jagielka and Pienaar seem to accept the fact they have to play themselves into the team, as it a tight knit unit.

Furthermore, where would Koumas, Richardson or even Nugent fit into this team?

Like many toffees, I was furious when it appeared that we were trumped to the signings of these players but in the cold light of day I cannot see how they would have benefited the team.

Useful squad players perhaps, but what does that mean? Koumas might have replaced Arteta in a Carling Cup game against Lower League oppo, but would he have cut it at White Hart Lane?

On the other hand, Baines, Jagielka, Pienaar and Fernandes really add something to the team and the squad in general. They also provide options for the future.

I can see your point Andy but there are players that would be wasted imagine if Alan Ball or some one of that standing signed.could you honestly justify not playing him.IF either YAK or Manny do sign I would play them from the start

I see you point Roy,. But why would you change it if we are winning? IF we win on Saturday and we do indeed sign both of them, then SURELY they have to wait don’t they. If nothing else simply to be fair to the players that are winning at the moment; not to mention rocking the boat.

Not sure I agree with you there Roy. New players do need a bit of time to gel with the current lot. They can do that in traiing. I would have both Manny & Yak on the bench for their first 2~3 games, bringing them on last 15~20 mins or so in one, two or all 3. Manny would settle quicker for obvious reasons but both would need to adjust to the system. Manny hasnt trained all week so he will need time and Yak, well god knows what system they play at Boro but it aint any good, so he will need to adjust to better players & system. Yak will probably then start most games in place of Victor whereas Manny may be rotated a wee bit.

You mean if Everton were buying players it should be done as early as possible. I thought even Moyes had said that.

Thats got to be one of the largest paragraphs i’ve ever seen.

Thommo - No, what I mean is that if it does take time to get the right players (as it obviously is) then they need to be brought in to the team slowly. Making sure that the loyal players you have aren’t simply cast aside; thus creating a bad atmosphere in the dressing room. And Blue Bill you are right it was a long paragraph...!!!!!

Saw Nugent on TV playing for Portsmouth decision not to buy him was a good one. I hope Yakubu signs as with him we would have a very strong attack. Managers like Jol and Fat Sammy Lee have brought in umpteen players but with little thought how they would fit in to the team. Granted Jol bought so called better players than Fat Sammy but Moyses seems to work out if they can fit into the team the work ethic and will they improve the side. After Yakubu, I can see perhaps only Vogel added this transfer window as Carsley only has a year left and in Jan I can see Moyes bring in a centre back as cover for Yobo and to eventually replace Stubbs in the squad. Maybe even a more experienced keeper will be added as the youngsters dont seem ready. With Valente and VDM possibly gone in Jan a left sided player would need to be brought in.

Kieran I am not talking about bringing in players that are not up to speed with fitness or I accept that the guys that play on a winning run deserve to keep there place,But in general if we have a player better than the one on the pitch I would swap him.remember when Howard signed DaveWatson Derek Mountfield was doing alright but Watson went on to validate Howards decision

Aaah..Big Dave Watson. Remember when he tucked one away against Liverpool to knock them out the FA cup after the 4-4 draw?
