Anyone remember..

Hmmm... anyone remember the last time we opened with three victories on the bounce?
I think I do. As an innocent and impressionable 14-year-old I distinctly remember tuning in to a barely audible Five Live (in Ireland it's always barely audible!) to hear Stuart Hall wax lyrical as the Toffees blew Sheffield United away with the help of a Tony Cottee hat-trick.
Did we qualify for Europe that season? I can't remember!

I’m very happy the way things are going - but you have to be cautious with early season - especially as an Evertonian. Strangely, we lost our opening game 4-1 at home to Spurs in the 84-85 season. I think we lost our second game as well. Then we went on to win the League, ECWC and runners-up in FA Cup.

Eh, we were? why? Were we that useless that UEFA actually banned us? To be honest I genuinely can’t remember - but I do know that 2 wins (or even 3) does not a season make and as Evertonians we should know better than to be looking at fixture lists, thinking "ah Reading, well that’s three points there then..."

Yeh, the last time Everton won there first three games of the season we avoided relegation on the last day with a win over Wimbledon at Goodison but somehow i dont see us having that problem this season with the quality we now have in are squad and the addition of Fernandes and maybe Yakubu! The only problem i can see Everton havin this season is the pleasent problem of trying to break into the top four!! In Moyes we trust, COYB!!!

I should explain. I was being mildly glib. I remember "Wimbledon 94". I sat by the same radio that brought me news of our stunning start to that season in tears as Alan Green, or some other prick, sniggered smugly as Ablett hooked the ball into his own net...
My point is though: let’s not get carried away. We have quality but lets walk before we can run...

Don’t count yer chickens! This is Everton remember.
Even so how many times did we manage back-to-back victories at all last year? If we can keep a run of form going for half a dozen or so games it’ll be a great sign of progress.

Yeah Mike you are right. We lost the second game to West Brom 2-1. We then went to Chelsea and won 1-0 with Kevin Richarson scoring with a long range effort. After that we never looked back.
Funny how some things stick in the memory.
